sugestions for plants

Bethel, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey everyone, I live in Ohio and have 14 acres of land and a house that was built in 1820, yep I said 1820. I need any and all information on what plants I want to grow from that time era. I want annuals and perennials, shrubs, trees etc. I want to surround my house with color from old time plants. Help me please.

Thanks,
Cindy

Lilacs, horseradish and rhubarb? Elm trees? I'm just trying to think what's growning around old farmsteads here. I'm sure there was more, but I think they concentrated more on food plants than ornamental ones.

Yes I agree. I just would like to have heiloom flowers and such surrounding my home. I do have a huge lilac that looks like a tree. Guess I need to look into heirloom seeds.

Iris... and some daylilies.

Check out Argyle Acres website, they sell heirlooms, not sure if they go back to 1820 or not. Our house was built circa 1860, so I know what you're dealing with. :0)

You are welcome to come down and raid some of my iris beds if you'd like. Just let me know.

That would be great Melissa, I just got two varigated iris plants today. I have never seen these before. I fell in love with hostas and daylilies last year and this year it is iris. Will it never end?

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

nope...it never does.

I'm starting to get buds popping up all over the place right now. If it EVER warms up here they will really start going. I'll email you when they start blooming, you can run down and see them in bloom and see what you'd like. :-)

Check out he Heirloom Forum here at Dave's. We've had a couple of discussions about heirloom flowers and food crops. And don't forget the antique roses.

HI, I bet some hollyhocks would go well, had them at the old farmhouse, along with an old, pink shrub rose with the most wonderful, scent. I don't know what it was (So long ago) and it isn't there anymore. We also had the old fashioned spirea and lilacs.

Good ideas everyone,

Darius, I will contact woodspirit1

Keep on sending info, I have about 14 acres and I want to plant about 3 to 5 acres in plants, bushes, trees, etc. around my house.

We planted 4000 hardwood trees and plan on planting 3000 pine trees, they are in my cellar waiting for us to get the planter to plant. Some of the hardwood trees are going to be sold for furniture making. They want 8 year old trees.

Kathleen good idea about roses, I do have bad luck with them, I guess I need to read up on how to plant, take care of roses

minihosta, believe me, this River Valley soil loves roses!

And the old roses are MUCH easier to grow than the hybred teas - that's why they're still around! Send me an email and I'll share some knowledge...

I think that I would love to invest in these antique roses. I don't know much about them only that the ones that I did have at one time were very hard to take care of. So I dug them up and gave them away. I have heard that to get some of the roses ready for winter you have to dig a trench and bury them under the soil. Sounds weird, why would you bury roses???
