# of views?

At the expense of slower server response time, I'll take response time over # of view any day.

Well I still miss it but I have moved on - Now I want to be able to sort/delete my mail!

Do views include search engine views as they crawl the site?

I agree with you fully! If I were (DG) Dave, I would be doing the exact same thing he is. Views are a tremendous drain on system resouces at a time that he can least afford it. As such it must be given the lowest priority now but note it's still on his list - he has never said that it is gone forever.

I'm just atempting to represent the logical reasoning behind him instituting the feature in the first place and to show that there are some less obvious reasons that the feature is of value.

The question really is, when Dave is ready (and that might be months from now) why not reinstate it?

I love to see a strong personality such as yours representing a point of view. Any particular reason you are against views that you'd be willing to share?

I like the # of views especially so in the identification forum & here's why. If I post a request for id and get no response the # of views lets me know whether or not folks are looking. If the plant has some views then I know that folks are looking and it might just be a hard plant to id. If there are no views after a few days I would consider placing it in a specific by 'type' forum, if there is one. Or, again if there are no views, I could look to see if I posted at a time there was heavy posting and mine got missed and I could bump it.
So, I am glad that Dave will look at this again when the new server hardware is up & running.

edited to say: I just went to 'My Info' to try & find a post I thought I had made & was very happily surprised to see that under the section of "View the threads angele has started." the # of views was there!
Didn't find my post I was looking for, maybe it was just a dream, LOL.
Hope this won't drain the system & that it can stay.

Since FlowerFan86 hasn't chosen to reply in the last 24 hours, I can only assume that it was simply another ballot being cast. That is an unquestionable right every member has. However, it adds nothing to the body of facts that I would like to see put on the table. I thought that by this time the popular vote had already been cast and counted. The last post by langbr certainly was not in favor of "Views" but it clearly helped advance and illuminate the discussion which is exactly what I hoping for.

The post from angele certainly adds to that body of facts in that it is a wonderful example of a totally less than obvious way that this feature has been of practical value to members. It makes me wonder how many other such personal uses of the feature are out there yet to be posted. All I know is that the more facts we can put on the table the better it will be for everyone and I include DG Dave in that number as it is his sole responsibility to judge how best to utilize available system resources.

As I checked back during the day, yesterday, the numbers stayed at zero so it appears to not be functioning. I love the site, no matter. I have been reading this thread from the start but because, I don't believe, Dave has ever said it wasn't coming back if possible, I was hesitant to voice my reason for liking it. The feature was important enough, to me, to do so. I have come to realize that the members are heard here at the garden. It was a simple informal raising of my hand in favor, so to speak.

I would vote in favour of having the # of views, but not if it causes server problems.

I like seeing the # of views for similar reasons as Darius, if I understand Darius correctly. I have posted a few threads for info, that have gotten no responses whatsoever - I would like to know if they were even read, so I can better gauge if I've chosen the right forum (or even the right website, period).

I also understand & respect the point of those who don't want to see the # of views. As a possible alternative, perhaps if the # of views were to be reinstated, it could be as an option which users could turn off in their preferences - ?

To me it serves no purpose. I find it more of a distraction than anything else. I read many post but respond to few. Most of the time it is because I do not have more to offer than what already has been said. I feel like I know so many people here and they don't know it! lol
You will have a post that has been viewed so many times with few responses sometimes is just people checking back on how things are going. My brain does not need more on the screen then there already is! : )

I wish there was a way to have a choice. So the ones that like it can see it and others that do not could turn it off.

I hope that I have made sense. Its been a loooooong day.

By the way I do LOVE this place!

First, thanks for factually documenting a very important item on the table in that Darius is not alone in her need for views. Secondly, thanks for your gift of a carefully considered suggestion on how the differences between members might be resolved. I'm setting aside the question as to how difficult this might be for DG Dave to program and I'm asking for all members who read this thread to post their reaction to your idea.

Wait. Stop. Hold on a minute....

There's no vote taking place here. Dave shut off the # of views because it was a server drain during a time we need all the server capacity we can muster.

The feature is on temporary hiatus. A few people voiced their opinion that they did or didn't miss it and that's fine. (As the saying goes, opinions are like belly buttons: everybody's got one, and no two are identical.)

The feedback as always, is welcome and I'm sure Dave will take it under advisement. But let's not confuse this casual discussion with some type of formal referendum to permanently remove or change the feature, please...

I was beginning to wonder if we were voting.
I was under the impression that it was temporarily disabled, and to me that means it will eventually come back.

I agree with you that this is just a casual conversation and one I initiated only to be of help in trying to find a compromise to bring DG back together as one happy family that it has always been and is intended to be. In no way did I ever represent this to be a formal referendum - that's neither my place nor was it ever my intention. If you feel that what I'm doing in trying to generate some consensus is wrong then I would be surprised and confused.

However, if the entire DG administration feels that way, I will immediately cease and desist.

Please advise.

dwdruley, I don't think we're going to reach true consensus on this or any other feature...everybody's got their own idea of what they like/don't like - and if you ask 'em they'll tell you. (And if you don't ask 'em, most people don't have a strong enough opinion to speak out - when they do, you know they feel really strongly on the subject ;o)

From time to time Dave asks for input on certain features - do the majority of users need it, want it, or really dislike it? This isn't one of those times, I don't think. The initial post was to inquire where this feature went. Since then, some people have spoken up for or against displaying the number of views.

When a feature is changed, added or removed, it gives people a reason to think about it and decide if they preferred the old way or new way. I think that's all this thread is - people expressing their preference. Will Dave leave it off, add it back, or go through the effort to make it a personal preference item? I dunno - guess we'll all have to wait and see!

(But - a gentle caution here - let's not get everybody's hopes up that he can or will make it a feature you can turn on or off...)

Your point that I might be raising false hope and optimism that the feature could be changed by this discussion is well taken. What happens and when it happens is entirely up to Dave. I assumed readers would know that since I don't have a DG Admiistrator tag on my user name. Complete consensus on anything is an unrealistic goal but trying to generate ideas for improving this or any other DG feature is certainly not out of bounds nor should it be discouraged.

Your unequivocal statement that it will be back is brand new information and greatly defuses my motivation in continuing to post. Unless I missed it, that's never been said before by a DG Administrator. As such, it changes entirely the tone of what I could intelligently say.

To make my intentions clear to you and Dave, I will make this my final post on this thread. However, it will have all been worthwhile to me if Dave finds the single suggestion from Shannon a help.
