Where did it go? Please don't tell me it has been gone for ages....
-Kim
# of views?
Something tells me Dave took it down today as a "server conservation" measure.
ahh. no biggie.
On the forum home page you can see the last person who posted in that forum. When you go to the forum that info is not there. Like right now it says darius posted in Tomatoes - go to forum and I have no clue which thread she posted in!
BTW my grandparents used to have a farm south of you in Coalmont/Monteagle. I loved going on vacations there!!!
Kim
Yes, now I don't know if it's worth posting something. Maybe nobody's looking at it.
I am at a loss as to how to use this site now.
Bernie
Bernie, the views will be back, hopefully early this week.
dave
OH Thank Goodness. I missed seeing that too. I kept feeling like something was missing. I cant believe how much I actualy use that little feature and how often I look at it.
Any luck yet on the # of views? Not pushing just wondering. Its amazing how the little things can mean so much to your day, LOL.
Yes, Dave; I miss it too.
Please restore it.
Can't you see I'm begging ya......

In time!
"SIGH" (imagine puppy dog eyes and some serious whining going on too)
I miss it, but not enough to endure slowdowns just to have it back...
I'll wait until I can "eat my cake and have it too" ;o)
I've often wondered why the # of views was even displayed, and what purpose does it serve?
It usually indicates to me that something is going on in there if the views far exceed the postings....like 100 posts and 3000 views.....but not necessarily that its a good informative thread, more like theres a cyber cat-fight or that someone isnt happy with something.
The only time I've really paid attention to # of views is when I've posted a new topic and not gotten any responses. If 30 people have read it and I've got no replies then I figure no one has interest or knowledge in the topic. If only 2 people have viewed and no posts then I figure there's still a good chance for a reply to be posted.
Other than that I really don't pay any attention.
If it helps preventing slowdowns that's great but I miss it too. It tells me at least someone's looking at my post, and I like that :)
Maureen
Me too. I know not every post has an interest for one reason or another. It helps me to figure out others interests and aslo makes me feel better when Ive posted something I think is pretty neat but dosnt necessarily need a reply posted to it.
I agree. Especially if it's just an info post - I like to know which things ended up being of interest to my forum buddies, and which didn't. :-)
Shannon
i thought i was losing it. i noticed them gone too. i miss that feature.
I would like to know the last person who posted to a thread and which thread it was. So if the forums on my homepage say darius was the last person to post I would like to be able to go to that forum and see which thread she posted to. Does that make sense? As of now you can only see the thread starter not who is posting.
-Kim
I think the thread on the top of a forum page is the one that was last posted to, so if you see that Darius was the last to post, it would be the first thread listed on that forum page.
Mendy
Still working on adding this feature back in, Dave?
It's on the list. It's a complicated thing since I don't want to affect performance while adding the feature. There are other items that are ahead of this.
dave
Well, I'll take performance over #views anyday!
Dave, I personally didn't like it and don't care that it's not there. Why? Because if I posted something 4 days ago and saw that only one person viewed it, that made me think that my posts weren't worth reading. I've seen postings where some people have actually asked why people aren't reading their posts. So I don't miss it and I already have slowdown with DG often and don't need anymore :) Kathy
I also don't like the feature. To me it seems like a "popularity" issue. Just MHO. I also noticed a marked improvement in speed when it disappeared. And now that it's back up, the # of views are all wrong anyway.
-Julie
Julie, I can see your point. However when I post something rather technical that usually doesn't require a response (like benefits of flax on the Healthy Living Forum), I DO like to know that folks are perhaps interested enough to read it.
I miss this feature too and will enjoy having it back if and when Dave decides to restore it.
It appears that Dave tested it for a little while today, but it must not have been quite what he wanted as it is no longer showing. As much as I liked it in the past, I'm willing to wait. :)
Donna
This is just to wish Dave good luck on the "views" project.
And remind me. :-)
Views are about on the bottom of my list right now. They take a tremendous amount of CPU and the site is running so good right now, I hate to rock the boat.
The new server hardware will be ready in about a month and after that, I'll try to turn my attention back to this.
dave
Congrats on your "see thru" vision.
Dave
I don't miss it at all, either. Just my 2 cents worth.
I always, always paid attention to it but I don't think it's truly useful. I thought I used it and needed it and now that it's gone i don't miss it at all and there's nothing i can't do that I did before. From the questions I've seen about it, the comparison between views and posts caused misunderstandings about whether people care enough to post.
How would you both respond to the point that Darius makes in her last post?
Not all titles accurately describe their posts, so my first reflex would be to say that number of views doesn't necessarily reflect interest in what's posted, but the title of the post. Then I'd have to contradict myself and say that I appreciated the information in that post, and if loss of # of views would discourage posting, it would probably be the only reason I could think of to keep it. Even then, I'm still not sure I think it's worth the confusion it causes.
Cheryl_IL,
I agree with you that the loss of views could discourage people in Darius' situation from posting. To her and others like her, it has great value that outwieghs imho the minimal confusion and ruffled feathers of thin skinned people engaging in a popularity contest.
Thanks for responding with an intelligent post that I respect.
Dave
Just to add my 2 cents. I don't even know why, but I liked it. I'm not really upset that its gone, or anything like that, but I did like it.
You took the words right out of my mouth Jennifer!
Thanks, John (and jdee)
Just trying to help, Dave.
That's your specialty, Remember me telling you so?
