I ordered a Mock Orange from Mich. bulb and it is now here. Really just a stick with a few stringy roots at the moment. Anyone have one?
Mock Orange
My neighbor has a whole row of old, established mock orange bushes. They don't bloom every year, maybe because of when they prune them. When they do bloom, it is a real treat to have that scent come wafting across our patio and into the kitchen windows.
Emma likes 'em, too! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/383155/
I have one, still in a pot after 3 years from a cutting. It's about 3 feet tall and time to decide where to put it. Got it because my mother had one and she loved it, although I was never there when it bloomed.
They grow pretty fast once they get planted and they are a sturdy plant. I have one that is 3 years old. My dogs prune it every year, so it has never bloomed. The ones in the nurseries smell really good, and I have some babies that I started from cuttings last year that are just leafing out now.
I have a mock orange I got at a plant swap two years ago. Its in my "vegatable" garden, along with the other stuff
I haven't figured out where to plant yet. It was tiny little thing & now its got several branches/trunks and its about
2-3' tall. Now if I could just figure out where to plant it :-)
We had one in Va. Beach when we lived there...and I loved it...,it bloomed every year and the scent was great...I would open the patio doors just to let the scent in. I wish I still had one. I wonder if they do well here in my area...I must check the nurseries.....Jo
Hope it's scented for you. I've bought countless mock oranges and have yet to enjoy a scent. Personally, I think the plants are too wild looking for a manicured garden, but would do better where they can do their thing, lol, they do grow fast.
from your photo rylaff, it looks dogwoodish. I kept thinking it was a big round type bush but like it better if it is not.
rylaff, is it huge? I was going to plant it near our patio so we could enjoy the fragrance.
Actually mine, in its natural state goes up about seven feet and then cascades down. I prefer it that way to sculptured. You can just about walk under it and look up at a canopy of white blooms. Total spread is about six feet.
I am so glad to know this. just goes to show NEVER assume! I love it on your fence.
I'd love it on MY fence...LOL Jo
roadrunner, it would look fantastic on YOUR fence!!
I went by my old home in Va. Beach where we had 2 big Mock Orange bushes growing....and they had built a deck where they were...and another that I love is Flowering Almond...they had cut that down also...so I didnt get starts from either!! It's funny what some people will love to have and others do not like...LOL Jo
That's gorgeous, Rylaff!
I just noticed buds on my neighbor's mock orange bushes today. Let's hope and pray they don't decide to cut them back for some crazy reason, at least not until they perfume the air and shed their lovely white petals. :)
Hey Kimberley...Can you get a piece and dip it in Root Tone and try to start one for me and bring it to the KY RU? Jo
Sure! Remind me in a bit. Isn't the best time to get cuttings in May or so, zone 5? I'm never quite sure.
Like I would know?? HAHAHAHA Jo
Melissa, does it bloom? Did it take several years to bloom the first time?
I love it, I love it, I love it!!
My neighbor's bushes are all topped (trimmed flat across their tops) every year or two; consequently, they are thick and woody on the bottom and full on the top. They've done weird things to their shrubs - very 50's landscaping. I hope the people who buy their house keep the bushes. I hope I hope I hope!
You will never be sorry you planted the mock orange. Mine has been georgous this year .
OH Melissa...I can smell it from here!! Brings back such good memories. Jo
