Kids and Gardening Funnies

Ok, folks, it's time to post some of your funny garden stories that include your kiddos.

One of mine (that started me thinking about a thread like this) happened just the other day. I finished Master Gardener classes last December and have enjoyed learning more about cultivars of various flowers, fruiting plants and veggies. I love finding a cultivar I didn't know about and learning more about it. Well, my youngest daughter, Kaley (age 5) and I were picking up some groceries at Walmart and I saw a large box of watermelons. I scoured the labels for cultivar information to see what they might be and was disappointed to find that no such information was provided. I was just curious - I'm a plant geek. I made a remark to Kaley (which I really wasn't expecting her to pay attention to anyway) that, "I wish I could figure out what that is. It's a bummer that the label doesn't say much." Kaley, somewhat exasperated, responded, "Mom, it's a watermelon. Have you never seen a watermelon before?"

Share your funnies, too.

When my Hannah was 2 and 1/2 and Sarah Grace was around 1, I took the two of them to the local plant nursery with me. I had been planting a lot that spring and Hannah was showing lots of interest in the fun-sounding latin names. As we strolled down the aisles of perennials, I'd casually talk to them about what was what. Lots of ladies would stop and talk with us, striking up conversation w/ Hannah. But we really got attention when Hannah recognized a plant from our home garden and loudly declared in her high, little voice, "Look, Mama! Moonbeam Coreopsis!!!" LOL :) Latin down at age 2!

Just happend last week- Weeding around my daylilies and my 4 yr old Nicholas follwed suite and ripped the top clear off one of my few DL's and proudly showed it too me. My reaction turned the poor kid to tears and I felt terrible. Hugged him to pieces and explanied that mommy needed to tell him which ones were the weeds and which were the plants I wanted to keep.

Today, I was using the watering can to treck accross the yard to where I had placed all the newly purchased pots so that I could see what they would look like in their new homes. Nicholas, wanting to help me asked if he could water and I abliged. I turned to corner to see him watering weeds!! in the ground!! not a potted weed !!

I give!!

Edited to say that when I ask Nicholas If he's goign to be a gardener, he says, "I am a gardener mommy"-- so he's just learning just like the rest of us :)

Cute, Susan :)

Another one... Hannah (now 4) was telling my sister about the forsythia we saw blooming at a local arboretum today...

"It's called 'Sunrise Forsythia', Aunt Sissy," she explained. "I guess that's because it grows in full sun". LOL -- this child hears her mama talk plants! :)

I'm enjoying this thread! Was it Herblady who told about her granddaughter "helping" by gathering all the plant labels from all the flats she'd sown? LOL

Oh, no. Oh, gosh. I'd be devastated. All the plant labels? Ugghhhhh.

I was talking with Kaley's teacher today about the field trip to the zoo on Friday. I forgot that I had also signed up for a program at our County Extension office for the same day. The teacher said not to worry, she had plenty of drivers. I was aghast. I was not about to miss my precious girl's field trip. That's why I quit working, for goodness sake. :) I told her that I'd contact the Ext. office and tell them to cancel my reservation. My children come first. Then, I thought about it a moment and turned to the teacher and added, "Unless one of them steps on one of my plants. Then, I have to make a decision about which one of them I like best." lol

Funny!!

Yes, this morning, I was spreading crushed egg shells around my newly sprouting hostas to prevent slugs and my two year old just didn't get "not stepping in the bed!" -- so, I quickly turned to another job and moved away from the hostas!!
