Looking for low growing perennial plants or flowering shrub

Au Gres, MI(Zone 5a)

Does anyone know of some fast growing low perennial plants, or flowering shrubs that would grow well in zones 5 to 7? Trying to help a friend out who lives in North Carolina......thanks

Most perennials are slow growing the first 1-2 years and then they take off. If the person wants a lot of color and wants to fill a large space fast I would try and talk them into annuals. But, if they have their heart set on perennials, I would suggest Yarrow, Geraniums or Phlox. All will grow 1-2 ft. high depending on varity. For a fast growing shrub with nice flowers, try Spirea, dawarf varity. All these will require at least 6-8 hours of light but are all low maintance and fast growing for perennials.

The various forms of sedums are fast growing, also the salvias and lobelias (some are taller than others), Nanking and Hanson bush cherries are fast and hardy in 4/5 and forsythia generally does well, as well as the wonderful lilacs. I think that it is Sunray coreopsis that blooms from seed the first year.
Agree that annuals would give a wonderful color lift to fit in quickly.
