Planting on the Curb

Trenton, NJ

I have a strip of yard 4 X 50 that runs along a sidewalk and borders a fairly busy street. It is planted with grass, but no matter what I do, by mid August every year, the foot or so of grass closest to the street has become polluted into a mishmash of weeds and bare ground. What I'm wondering is whether there is anything else I could plant it with that might be more pollution-resistant.

When the areas here are like you describe, it is usually from careless drivers pulling into the grass to park. If that is the case there, you may be fighting a losting battle. Some choices might be variegated vinca vine, liriope or some other tough perennial that can stand a bit of foot traffic.

You might want to look to see what is being planted in the medians and parking-lot-green-spots in your zones. :)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I wish our curb was higher on our street -- we are guilty of mushing up our curbside grass with the van when we park on the street (no garage). I've even thought about putting gravel there, but it would look awful. Periwinkles are a good idea, for in our zone the stay nice looking all winter. Our neighbor has oodles of it about 10' away and I know she'd let me have divisions.
