Recycled Rubber Border

Lochbuie, CO(Zone 5b)

Hi! Has anybody used that recycled rubber border mulch?

I was looking at it in the Gardener's Supply Catalog but would like to read more from people who've actually used it before I buy.

Thanks! -Christie

just curious, but where exactly are you going to use it and why?

I recycled some brick and that's what I'm using now to edge between my lawn and flower beds but they aren't working very well (I didn't morter them). Even though they are buried about 1/2 way into the ground, the kids keep knocking them over and they're just not very attractive. Plus its a pain to trim the lawn against them. But, they were FREE, so I did the best I could since I needed something.

I like the idea of the recycled mulch edging because it could be flush w/the ground so I wouldn't have to use the trimmer, and, since its all one piece (essentially) it wouldn't scatter all over the place like gravel or mulch would.
I am curious as to whether or not it stays in place the way they advertise it to. -Christie

Cool idea. Could you write them and ask what the weight is for each length? Might give you an idea about wether they stay put or not. I would think that the rubber is fairly heavy.

I'd like to try the rubber mulch, too. There have been several threads about it here at DG and some folks have had good success with it. The loose, chipped type would be nice for the curb area between our sidewalk and the street, since it would not break down or float away in rain.

I bought the 6 inch recycled rubber strips from Lowes hardware for 1/2 the price of some I've seen for sale.
Has been working great under and along our chainlink fence. Makes mowing and edging much much easier.

Would you mind taking a picture? I'd really like to see it "in action".

1/2 the price, well I need to head to Lowes to check that out.

Gardener's supply has 5 1/2 inch ones, 1 inch thick, but its $24 for 10 feet so it would cost me $200 to do my lawn, and that's a bit steep for me! Thanks, Christie

I'll try and get a pic later this afternoon.............

Yes Lowes had it for $11.97 for the 6" X 10'

Here is the pix I promised.....not the best I'll admit, but should give you some idea.

Your welcome. :-)

Yes, I like it too (my bricks are really starting to like crummy). How thick is it? - Christie

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

An inchish I'd say...........

Thanks for the info and pix, RikerBear.
I'm going to try to get to Lowe's on Monday to check it out - maybe tomorrow if I can get my act together :-)
I think if I like it I may just go ahead and buy one length of it to try out - i'll put it in one area and see how it holds up to my destructos the wonder children, and the elements.
Thanks again, Christie

You may need to also get some stake clips (large U shaped metal clips) to help hold it down at the corners....or do what I did and cut the corners off of old metal coat hangers :-)

Lochbuie, CO(Zone 5b)

I was wondering about that - thought they may need some sort of securing.
Do you drill holes for the clips or just position them over the corners?
I've used the metal ones before, but rust was a problem - not very attractive!
Do the coat hanger ones rust? Do you use the painted ones? I think I can get some brown ones so those might match better, at least. Hmmmmm, the littlest thing requires the most amount of thought! -Christie

I have never worried about the small amount of rust that might occur.....I also didn;t bother drilling, just pushed REAL hard and punched through.

To hold down the plastic in our veggie bed, we used some copper tubing I'd picked up at a yard sale. It was the thin type, like you'd see with an icemaker connection kit. We just bent off sections and formed them into big U's.
