No more new forums until April 23rd!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

That's the beauty of Dave's Garden. We don't have to worry about future problems, unless it's about our plants, because Dave and his administraters take care of all the nit-picky stuff. I'm sure that in building this wonderful home for all of us we can trust his judgement as to our needs. Of course he spoils us shamelessly, so just kick back and ENJOY!!!

Well - I just said what I had to say, and how I felt about it. Guess that's all.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

This has turned out to be a very interesting and informative thread. I personally have such mixed ideas on the subject that I agree with all the ideas here. There are too many forums and we need to have more forums. LOL part of me agrees with both statements.

It was grand when we were small enough to be able to keep up with every post made on every forum. But to do that now would be impossible even if it were all on a single thread.

I belonged to a small and intimate group of people and over the years it grew. Now I do not even know many of the members at all and so at each meeting I try to acquaint myself with someone new. That means I have to make the effort to locate a new person and greet them even if they are in a different seating section. The same holds true here. I can stay happily among people I have greeted since I first joined or I can mingle at will.

I miss the old intamacy but the new crowd gives me lots of new opportunities to learn and grow. Just as a crowd of people will break up into different conversational groups, the forums and threads break us up in a similar fashion So that we are not all talking at once and creating such a din that no voice can be heard.

I also understand removing forums that are not being utilized. However there are occasions when we like to go back to see old threads. Maybe there is a way to archive those out of favor forums so we could peruse them when we get nostalgic.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

It is a toss-up: I like the idea of using regions, but then like someone else said, even those climates can be very different. And Karrie, even if we were both in the hypothetical "Washington" forum, Spokane and Olympia have tremendously different climates! As I imagine is the situation in many other states, too, even who already have their own forums. Personally, I don't mind all the forums. I watch the ones I really like, and if I'm curious I look through the others. I can always add and subtract forums and threads from my watch list. And perhaps I'm happy becuase I'm a newer member and this is how I've always know it, but this site is my homepage and I really enjoy Dave's Garden!

I'll repeat what I said before, you add a new forum. People that go there do not participate in some of the other old standby's, like Terry said.
I think it's fun to compare notes with other parts of the world, not just stuck in your own little corner.

That's the beauty of the forums tab.
Watch only the ones you're intrested in.

HEY! CAN YOU HEAR THE REALLY LOUD TWO-FINGERED WHISTLE?

Can I have your attention, for a moment, please? I don't think Dave posted this to start a debate on more forums. In fact, it was a post to halt the avalanche of new forum requests.

I can go back through the thread and start deleting posts, or we can respectfully agree to disagree on the philosophy of more or fewer forums. But let's also respect the original message from Dave to institute a temporary moratorium on new forum requests.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I think it does compartmentalize people to an extent, but how can you really get to know everyone on all the forums? At least this way I can get to know a few people well, and keep in touch with everyone on some of the more general forums. I think the system works. :)

BOY! That Terry can REALLY Whistle....woke me right up/. Jo

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

I just saw a forum on a different website where threads were marked "CLOSED" after they had served their purpose. Terry, could that not be instituted here at DG and applied to threads like this one?
(I can just hear the yelling going on in the background, LOL)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Actually yes we can prevent any further posts to this thread or any others. However, I'll defer to Dave to decide whether to stop postings since he initiated this thread, and he may prefer to leave it open for additional posts.

I was simply trying to point out that it is kind of ironic (and rather disrespectful to the thread starter) to continue bickering over the very issue this thread was intended to put the kibbosh on, at least temporarily.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I heard the whistle! I just don't think people carefully read through the whole thread before posting. And I agree with Terry - this wasn't supposed to be about bickering - just ideas. Noone should have been slammed for their ideas.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Bowing respectfully to the higher powers *smile* , and now I'm going over to see the 5 new kittens on the Pet Forum and the RU pictures the Canadians are sharing with us. See ya' around the Garden.

I was puttering around my front yard today, and got to thinking about how many changes I've made to this area.....and I started missing the landscape forum (lower lip quivers....)

I know there are also some folks who would like to see a place to talk lawns, including me. What if we blow the dust off that forum, maybe rename it "lawns and landscaping" or "curb appeal" or something else (I'm open to suggestions)?

I think I showed remarkable restraint, waiting until 4/22 to ask *grin*

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I think you deserve a medal......both for your restraint, and for dusting off the Landscape Forum! I am starting a shade garden (teeny-tiny) and have been looking for ideas (read pictures) on their Forum. It would be nice to just request info and have the pictures come to me! *smile*

I miss it too, even though I never got past the lurking stage on that one. If it comes back, I promise to commit, this time! :-) I will even post some pics of our yard...although all I could take now are "Before" pics....

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Terry, I agree. I was looking at your front yard work in your diary earlier: http://davesgarden.com/journal/d/t/Terry/100/ , and wanted to congratulate you, but wanted to post it on the Lanscaping Forum. Surprise! There is no Landscaping Forum any more!

I admit, like Shannon, I was a lurker. I think "Curb Appeal" has more "do-it-yourself" appeal, maybe would attract more posts from people like myself who would not call some of the work I've been doing "landscaping." I'd certainly feel more free to ask for ideas, and would love to share my before and afters (which will also soon be in my diary.)

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I miss the landscaping forum also. Since I'm trying to relandscape our yard after the house building episode, I'd love to see what others are doing with theirs. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and discouraged, and then I see a post or picture of what someone else has done and I get inspired again.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Maggie, I like your suggestion for the name. Mind you, we have curbs at our house! ;-) Would it also make sense for peeps on farms, etc.-?

I've posted a few questions in our Canadian forum about landscaping, but I'd love to be able to run them by the landscaping forum too, if it comes back. A little moral support sure goes a long way.

Shannon

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Amen! We need all the moral support we can get! Everything that has happened to my yard - front or back - has been planned and installed by me. Sometimes I feel really drained, and like it will never end. It's a real boost when someone comes along and encourages you.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

I call a lot of my yardening LANDscaping 'cause I'm always moving dirt around. ~Blooms

While I do like the name curb appeal it is the name of a TV show and I wonder if it might be trademarked?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Zany, I wondered the same thing, but I don't think it is, since it's a term the real estate market was using long before the TV show....

Hey! It's April 23rd! (hint, hint, nudge, nudge)

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I like the name Curb Appeal too! I don't have a curb, but it rings a bell with me! I'm sure if it is trademarked Dave will find a way to "tweak" it.
Pati

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I don't think it's trademarked to the HGTV show. (After all, they picked up a term that's been bandied about by the real estate industry for years...)

Soooooo, Dave. Any reason to not bring this one back out to see if it takes root this time, and give it a more user-friendly, eye-catching name? One with more......appeal? (groaning at my own baaaaad pun.)

Please with sugar on top? This is a forum I would REALLY like. :-)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Me too, me too! I'm really digging into the subject (as long as we're not intending to make any puns, lol), now that we're into our 3rd year in our house - would love to share ideas with others.

Yeah, go ahead Terry. Bring it back for us.

Thanks! It's back up and running - with a new name ;o)

Thanks Terry & Dave

edit here: found it... Curb Appeal, now off to explore it
