No more new forums until April 23rd!

Just an FYI: I'm putting a cap on new forums for new. Please don't ask for a new forum until after April 23, 2005.

thanks!

doggone it!

I was just about to suggest that 'People who love rose addicts' co-dependency support group forum...lol.

Thanks for the California gardening forum Dave.

Is Dave planning a big surprise for my birthday?

A moratorium usually means a big change is coming!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

No problem here. I can't keep up anymore.

How about a Follow the Forum Cliff Note forum??? LOL

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL Chele!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

so this is why I asked for a book swap/critque forum and heard nothing. How can someone named Zanymuse not be funny?

LOL sometimes humor comes across as sarcasm and since that was not my intent I thought it best to edit myself out. (gotta love that edit button when you type before you think!)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Good grief, zany, we registered about the same time. There were about 2,000 members then. Who know DG would turn out to be like it is and still have the friendly atmosphere it is now famous for.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, and it amazes me how many of the people that were here then are still here now. Many of the newer members have picked up the slack and kept these forums jumping when some of us take a breather and instead of becoming a tight knit group that keeps others out it has remained an open and friendly, welcome to all, type of atmosphere. But as it has grown I have had to be cautious that what I meant to say and what I said are the same thing. Humor and wit can be a two edged sword if not used with discretion and I have been known to but my foot in it a few times!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

It is much hard to portray humor in the written word, than when you can hear inflections in the voice and facial expressions. So you are right. I told one humorous member that she "wasn't right" meaning a bit of crazy-fun. She got insulted and decided she wouldn't post to that thread again because she "wasn't right." I had to explain to her that I meant she was very funny and a bit nutty and that was all I meant..........

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Boy, oh boy! I have fallen into that same trap a few times, Zany. I am much more careful now, hopefully. I always want to just fall into a big hole somewhere every time it has happened but I have had to apologize and move on hoping they believed that I was "just kidding". I don't kid as much as I once did though cause it is just not safe.when...Quoting woodspirit.... "It is much harder to portray humor in the written word, than when you can hear inflections in the voice and view facial expressions."

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, I think I was lucky enough to catch this one before anyone else saw it. That is one of the advantages to posting in the wee hours when few folks are on line :~)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

lol, zanymuse! :-) If DG ever starts a forum for peeps who put their foot in their mouth, I'd be one of the founding members.

Shannon :-)

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Yeah, Zany! I have done the "wee small hours" thing also. I was amused to read that you had also. What I need is a proof reader to watch over everything I post. To be perfectly honest, since we are being honest, that was the reason I gave up going to the chat room. It just wasn't worth someone not understandin my particular brand of humor and getting upset with me. No, I don't think it happened but I just decided that I couldn't afford to take that chance. Guess I need to learn to be more serious, huh?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Now look what ya all have gone and made me do! This thread of Dave's about no new forums has gotten hykacked! Sorry Dave!

Northern California, CA

Zany - I found the hijacking very amusing and saw not a speck of sarcasm anywhere. :-)

PS......you are wrong about nobobdy seeing it before you deleted it. Some of us other Californians are night-owls too.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Happenstance! I know there are a few others that are up at 1:30 am on the west coast but figgured if I caught it fast that maybe no one saw it. but you being a UBER makes it almost impossible to slide one past you !

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Oh geezers, spklatt .. you hit the nail on the head, here >

on the subject at hand

I worry the splitting into separate state or specific interests might split us, especially as membership numbers go up.

on the other hand maybe folks who don't post or don't post often might begin to post and that would be good.

Well I think some of our Calif, friends have disappeared. I'll get over there to visit soon.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

This doesn't bother me one bit! :-) I felt like the additions of new forums were getting a little out of hand, and unless they were put in alphabetical order, rather than by date of last post, some might get harder and harder to find! I was already thinking: Ok - we have Texas Gardening, Michigan Gardening, California Gardening - well if we ended up with one for every state....... I mean, can you imagine! I just try to get information from people that live in a similar zone and climate- and there is no guarantee of that when you go by state - considering many states have very diverse zones - look at a zone map of the U.S. to see what I mean.

Waxhaw (Charlotte), NC(Zone 7b)

Personally, I hate the ever growing number of forums. I am subscribed to 23 (I think) but can hardly find time to read more than a few. I wish we just had a perennial, annual, grass, and trading forum.

What do you do if you want to ask a question about "recommended annuals to go with yellow daylilies in a perennial bed in a PNW garden "? Do you post in annuals, perennials, daylilies, lilies, garden design, PNW gardening, Oregon gardening, Seattle Gardening, or Cool Climate Gardening (ok I am adding to the forum list here, but mainly to get the point accross)..

Then you also avoid having people go nuts when you accidently post a question about dutch irises in the Iris forum only to be told that apparently dutch irises are not real irises, and grow from bulbs and does not belong in the iris forum. You repost in the bulb forum, only to be advised that you will probably have more luck on the iris forum .. well there we go !!!

Ok, I may be adding on thick here, but just trying to say that I wish we had far fewer instead of far more forums ...
(I will now crawl back under the stone I came from)

LOL !!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I totally appreciate what you are saying Kenneth! Is there room under the stone for two?

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

grrrmph, getting crowded under here /;-)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Make room for me under there, too. I'm sure I miss stuff because there are so many forums... cannot posssibly watch them all unless I give up meals, sleeping and bathroom breaks. : )

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Lol I guess I am not the only one. I had an email the other day "why haven't you been posting?" Heck, I cannot make it through the forums. Progress has its price.

Dave, It is still the bestest place in town. We cannot help our small town attitudes lol.

As if we didn't have enough Forums (I have about 6 marked), I am a constant lurker and hang out with the Canadians! And......then somebody posts a link to an interesting web-site (read Gardenwife) which has a link to another web-site, then another, then another. *sigh*

My doctor gave me a funny look when he asked how my Aquatic exercise was coming along and I asked him what Forum that was on? LOL
Pati

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

.. LOL .. Oh Pati ... now, THAT was hilarious !! ...

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Pati, Yep, giggle, snort. This _IS_ my 'real' world. This is a right cozy l'il ol rock we're snuggled under. Now I gotta crawl out and around and see if I can meet some of the newer comers to the Garden.

Perhaps the number o the newcomers means we do need more rooms, it's a hard one to ponder. I visit the market gardeners, usually just as a lurker, but there is good info there. I visit teh Texans 'cause it felt like they had all left, but I see them around now.

And there are so many different climates in Calif that I'll have to surf over there for relevant situations or interesting off topic discussions.

oh heck I fergit where I was going with this. I'm headed for perennials now. Have a great day in the Garden.
~Blooms
Oh yeah, believ it or not some of my gardening conditions [and my sense of humor] relate well to the Canadian forum.

Waxhaw (Charlotte), NC(Zone 7b)

Frogsrus.. you are absolutely right. And you wont "get send to Disney" here.... LOL !!

I guess the argument for expanding forum is to give like-minded people a place to get together. So hosta-holics can talk to other hosta-holics without skipping all the "useless" posts in there... that.. and the fact that a single perennial forum would probably overload the server.

For me, I am always out of time, and I love most plants and find that we have some very interesting, unique and very nice people on all of the forums, so reading all the posts on one mail que would make it easier for me (except I would have to skip the Canadian stuff... LOL !!)

One of the reason I am completely out of time is that I have become completely addicted to a game my daughter plays online called toontown.com where you fight cartoon characters with squirt flowers, throw pies, and falling safes (remember the animated movie: Rogger Rabit ??) but only with disney characters. It is SOOOOOO addictive... wait... I did get "sent to Disney" afterall... oh no !!!!!

(back under the stone)

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

You know - instead of ending up with a forum for every state we perhaps would have been better going with a forum for each "zone" (3 or 4 through 10 as I don't know if anyone lives in 1 or 2 that grows anything, lol!) 50 vs. 7. Probably too late for that. Plus, the climates within those zones can vary as well - from soggy to desert. But it was a thought!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Too funny, but you made some good points!!! Dog my DG name should have been "serious_sister"

Judy

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hey Blooms, you're welcome in the Canadian forum any time - but you have to spell "humor" with a "u" ! lol Not to mention, learn at least 20 of the different uses for the word "eh". ;-)

I wonder if the day will come when the Canadian forum will start splitting into eastern/western, or individual provinces....maybe there's some "critical mass" number at which any forum tends to be too big for peeps, and they start grouping off, requesting their own forums.....

Guess I'll join you all under that rock....I hardly have time to follow all the forums I'd like to, any more. There's some serious prioritization going on, over in my neck of the woods. Of the 20 or so that I have marked, I can only really keep up with 2 or 3.

Shannon

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Can I put in a small grumble?

There are so many forums now that I have a hard time finding what I am looking for. I have reached an age whereby 20/20 vision is a thing long passed. (Very long passed for me as I have worn bifocals since I was 14.) I understand the why the forum come up as they do but alphabetical order would sure make finding the one you want easier.

Its true, Shannon. If we were not so nosy and afraid we would miss something, we would not have to read so many forums but hey-gotta do it lol. I just do not come here every day any more. That way more builds up.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I encourage everyone to take full advantage of the forum selection and "watched threads" features.

Be choosy about which forums you list on your home page (think how nifty it would be if you could pick and choose your favorite newspaper sections and columns, and that's ALL you'd see every morning?) If you list them all, it defeats the purpose of being able to select your favorites ;o)

And when you read a thread and find it interesting, set yourself to watch it. If it gets tiresome, click on the unwatch link.

If you do those two things, you won't know EVERYTHING that happens on the site, but you'll stay on top of the goings-on that are nearest and dearest to you.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good reminder, for those who may not have known about the favourites options. In my case, though, I've been taking advantage of them for a long time already - and my list of favourites (both forums and threads) is simply too large now. I've had to cull some really good ones, because I just can't keep up anymore. DG is getting to be a big site, and it's going through the predictable changes that come with that. Not complaining! The more the merrier. Just reporting how the growth and splintering of the DG forums is affecting me, for one - there's definitely a little bit of regret mixed in. But....onwards and upwards! :-)

Shannon
