Frannie your pictures are beautiful. I'm looking forward to seeing everyones seedlings this year with their summer color. I have a feeling it is going to be a very exciting year.
Shirley I just love your Punkin. It's such a nice deep orange.
Seedlings from last year.....
Thanks Roz. Are you still growing brugs? It's good to see you here. I've missed you.
Not anything like I used to , Brugie. It is just hard to muster the enthusiasm like Gloria and I had for these flowers. I relly love the tropicals, and it seems that hibiscus is shoving the brugs out!!
I don't they they will shove the brugs out here, but the brugs might have to skinny up a bit to make room for more hibiscus. I'll have about twenty of the tropical hibiscus this year and quite a few perennial types too. For me, that is a lot.
I am growing her again this year to see how she does in the heat. We had heat last year, but she wasn't blooming during that time. If we are back to normal this year, I'll find out. The plant itself did well in the heat that we had. It was in full sun until late afternoon. I'm going to put it in a pot this year and if the blooms don't like the sun, I'll move it. I will keep this one just because of the color. It's fun to see the intense orange color among the green leaves.
Thanks everyone. If she does well, maybe she will be ready for release this fall. That is a big maybe right now.
LOL Frannie, I am moving to your pink house. And you tossed that one with all that pink??? What a picture. Oh you are a stong one. I need to gain some control!
LOL Kell.......I was just thinking to myself this morning as I was looking at that picture that it was a good thing that I got rid of it last year because today I would like to have it simply because it had one heavy flush after another and really added color to the garden area. I am not very good at making decisions to toss but I am getting better. I have a new seedling in the place where this one was dug out. I am hoping to have more with stronger flower walls.
I couldn't have tossed all that pink myself. No way. LOL. I did notice the flowers were a little collapsed. Do you think it was from the heat? It is an amazing picture. Hey, I do not have such heat here. SHUCKS!!! Too late. LOL
I look forward to the day that I have to "toss" brugs, instead of performing mouth to mouth to save 'em.
Seriously, these photos are exactly what make the brug so enticing .... you wonderful gardeners who love them for their beauty, work with science and nature to produce the new, and then so generously share their success and inspiration with others like myself.
A sincere thanks to all of you.
Jackie
Yikes, I'm getting all misty again.
Gosh Gretchen, your GH is so neat and tidy, I stand amazed everytime I see it. Great to see you, seems like its been a while since I saw you post...or maybe that was me and just missed ya :)
Julie/BABS
Julie -- thank you! I just don't seem to have the amount of time to spend here that I once did...I just sent you an e-mail. Did you receive it? Who is BABS? Brug Addict Baby Sitter? Please tell?
Gretchen is as awesome as her greenhouse. Take it from one who knows. Thank you, Gretchen.
Wow, you have even a better idea for it Gretch!!! lol...I was wondering when someone would ask hehehe...but I like you idea better :)))) Let's start a club lol...the BABS Society lololol...mine was Brug Addict Buddy Society lol...well heck I like both!
You're welcome my friend :)
Julie/ BABS
Gretchen - how big is that greenhouse and from where?
I'm this close | | to getting something or building a hoop house.
Julie - guess Gretchen wins and it didn't take long, did it?
blaine/BABS
fyi - Julie has to teach you the secret handshake before you can legally use the tag.
LOL Blaine, you're too much!!! This was >>>>>>>>>>Blaine's idea lol....isn't it so very cute! Blaine, we'll practice it first before using it...they may laugh at us lolol heheh
Gretchen, I need your help for a day to get my greenhouse in order. Looks great at your place.
Oh thank you all! I have so much crammed into that tiny space, that organization is not a luxury, its an absolute necessity. Would y'all believe that I spent a couple of days organizing all the babies in order by their number? It makes it much easier to find them this way. Now I just have to go to the tray that contains the number I'm looking for, and search through one tray rather than the whole GH. Of course that doesn't include those in Gallon pots, but they're on the master list by location.... Part of the reason I did this is so that when I return from my trip, it'll be easier to see if anything has expired in my absence.
Shirley -- I'd come help you anytime!
Sylvia -- thank you! You are such a sweetie! I sure enjoyed visiting with you today -- I could've sat on your lovely porch and talked all afternoon!!!
Julie -- love it! I was thinking of the new Grand Baby when I said baby sitter.
8ftbed -- its only 6X10 and its the Domhaus from Gronhaus. Its not nearly big enough for me. I need something 3 - 4 times that size. Here's what it looked like in January, before I moved all my non-brug tropicals to the porch a couple of weeks ago.
Do you have someone coming to take care of your plants while you are gone? I'm thinking about how quickly mine dry out in the greenhouse. I'd have to find a plant sitter.
Zone envy alert... Zone envy alert!!!
Thanks for the info. After seeing Brugie's the other day I know something is going to happen real quick. Just don't know whether I'll go with something that can be put away in the summer or permanent... and then there's the size. sigh....
Oh yes, Shirley! Now on warm, sunny days, I'm having to water twice a day, but I can't pot up because I don't have room. I have hired a neighbor girl to come over twice a day. I take care of their place when they're gone and I figured as an incentive to be here everyday, there will be a nice payday for her. Her Mother will come with her, so I'm not too concerned. She'll have to open it and water in the morning, and water and close it in the evening, if its going to be cold. It definitely doesn't take care of itself!
8ftbed -- I wonder if you could keep it warm enough in your area. I only keep it 20 degrees warmer than the outside temp here.
Gretchen, you do a great job, I love & envy your organizational skills, as well as your green thumb. Are you already having to water twice a day or are do you mean later in the season - oh, oh, I see, you are watering twice in the GH, gotcha. I took everything outta mine except the bubbler and a few rootings, so watering isn't the chore yours is. I have my seedlings outside on bakers' racks, under the eves and it hasn't been hot/dry yet, so I'm okay with the watering for now...I hope you have a great time on your trip!!!!
That's where I'm thinking more along the lines of season extender on both ends. Trying to keep a decent temp through Jan/Feb is probably not feasible in anything besides a full fledged gh. As far as the cost of running that up here - the old saying probably applies: "If you have to ask, you can't afford it".
8ft, you might consider a bubbler for your back up cuttings - I believe you could have a closet type space, with a bubbler, maybe even in your house, with way less added cost than a GH and heating it. I lucked up on a GH, but if I didn't have it, that's what I'd do, even it it was just a lean to on an outside wall or in a carport, garage, porch, basement, shed, or other. I wish there were GH, drip systems and other real type gardening shows on DYI, HGTV, etc, instead of mostly landscaping...maybe there are and I just don't know which channels...
Ahhh, Sherry - you open a whole nuther can-o-worms. :)
GH, HH, something to move this stuff that's in the basement, guest bedroom, and front picture window outside. Brugs have put a new kink in my operation. I can't just 'keep it alive'. Gotta feed and water and promote growth. Well - these brugs respond verrrry well to the tlc. It's time to start veggies and some other flowers, so I want to make room.
Too late though - I just did some power searching and have a pair of Gretchen's Domhaus's ordered.
Now about them gardening shows! I have cable but not the decoding box, so I don't have HGTV. Everthing I get is on PBS except for Rebecca. 'Gardening Home' got old because all he did was recite his '12 principles' but PBS dropped him anyway. Victory Garden was a favorite until Roger Swain and his English buddy left. I watch it now, only because it's a Sat a.m. ritual. I'll just leave it at that. :)
Nicely done David!! I hope your Orange King passes muster and gets your release one day.
Gretchen your GH is so neat and organized. Can't wait to see what all those babies turn out to be.
David your seedlings are beautiful. Glad to see someone else working on yellow and orange. We need more of them.
David - did you take cuttings of OK or overwinter the entire plant? That would look wild in one of those tree form full flushes I see pics of. Or are you in an area where you can leave them in ground year round?
Do you expect it to bloom the 2nd year with the same flowers?
Well I'm pulling for you and Orange King!!
David, your pictures are so nice. Orange King is a beauty. I'll be anxious to see more pictures of her this year. Bebe X Whiskers is a nice one too. I also like her soft color. Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.
Yes, Blaine, we watched every frame of Victory Garden, could not get enough of it!! Of all the shows they repeat, I don't think Victory Garden was one of them. There is one current show I would recommend, if you received HG, Paul James and Gardening by the Yard. There used to be an excellent radio show, from Jackson MS on Saturday am, with a guy named 'Felder', cannot remember his last name. Wow, it was good. Boy, I surely know about the can of worms, every time I get everything fixed just right, here comes more worms!!!
All the photos on this thread are super, there is no way I can reply to all, but I sincerely appreciate having a peek at your flowers, gardens, GH, this is a fun thread!!!
David, I LOVE your dark orange bloom, the photo is great too, that blue is really pretty, I wish I had leaves that color!!!
Ah, the Bebe....I love anything to do with Bebe...but maybe I'm partial.
They are gorgeous!
The Orange King is something else....I look forward to seeing more from this one.
Brugie ~ Your pumpkin is a knock-out too!
Gretchen ~ wonderfully organized, do you give lessons? I need help. LOL
Jackie
