Garden signs of life so far

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Ok , this is for TC too, he wanted to see what I have coming up so far compared to him. Not anywhere near as most folks but for me this is better than any year Ive had so far. I will have lived in the house 4 years come May and even tho there are alot of other things I really really want to do, alot of stuff Im holding off on until DH decides when to redo the driveway. Id reather not have to dig up and replant as much as I want bordering the driveway.
Here we go, first pick is the sidewalk in front of the house This part of the garden dosnt get much light till late morning early afternoon.

Potted daylilys on my back deck. These get lots of sun and the dirt is warm in these so growth is pretty good here.

A forsythia that I still have in the pot because I couldnt figure out where to put it last year. Sorry the pic is bad but can you see the green sprouting out. My first forsythia since I moved out of the house I grew up in, so no matter how spindly I LOVE IT.

A little bit of a close up of the tulips coming up. I planted them all over the yard in the fall so who knows whats coming up where. I forget. Have daffodills coming up too with blooms getting ready to open any day now.

Of course you know you live in two zones warmer than mine, which means I'll be about three or four weeks behind you in green-up time (don't ask where that formula comes from, but I think it's pretty close to actuality).

I'm probably as thrilled as you are to see the green comin out on your little forsythia. I love those! I have one in my front yard that is a displaced Kentuckian, just like me. ;~)

I bet those tulips will be gorgeous when they all come up!

As soon as I see the first green sprout pokin through, I'll post a pic of it here. I'm not includin what we have comin up now under the grow lights, that's artificial. I'm talkin 'bout stuff out in the yardins. ;~)

This should be a very interesting thread Dcat, thanks for takin me up on the suggestion.

For now, we're still dealing with...

EWEWEWEW, LOL. Sorry TC but even tho we barely got any snow especialy compared to others, Im done with it. If it tries to snow again right now I would scream so loud you would hear me and say "Dang I guess D'cat got some snow". LOL

That is a real purty pic tho.

Now Im waitin on others to post their pics, I know others have lots more coming up than I do, and when summer time comes and everything is really going strong, WooHoo.

Janet,
I know you said the bed in the first picture doesn't get much light until the late morning, early afternoon. Is that all the sun it gets or do you get sun there until late in the evening? Great space to work with.

Hi TC! I've been blowing some warm air your way but that little snow picture sure is pretty. :-)

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Hey back Terrie! And thanks for the warm air, I'm feelin it today. We have sunshine now and it feels like it's about 50 degrees out! Just about all the snow has melted and I think I spotted some irises wakin up!
Thanks for the compliment on my photo too. ;~)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

That first pic gets sun all afternoon until the sun finaly sets behind the house down the street. Little does DH know that Im going to be widening that bed this year too, BWAHAHA. Ahem, yes I am going to add some more room there so I can put a few more things in it, plus I have another bed farther out in the yard that gets most of the days sun and Im going to expand that one.....again. heehee

Hosta Scooter - up and looking pretty...

Some of my daffs have come and gone and others are just starting to bloom. Crocuses are done and tulips are on the rise. The grass is even starting to green up. Bradford Pears are wildly in bloom and Redbuds are just starting to put on a show. I love it. Here's a very close up picture of some chocolate mint that I hope goes crazy this year. :)

After seein Scooter, I'm really anxious for my hostas to come up!
I know some mints can really be invasive, but that might not be the case with your variety Carla. We have some chocolate mint here and it usually stays in its place. ;~ )

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Well, we may be leaving next year and one of those two Scooters might need a new home. :) (Never know what the military is going to do, but our time here will be up). About 3-4 months before we move, I start shipping out my fave plants. I make a lot of friends that way. :~)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hosta Scooter is adoreable!

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

I don't think I've admitted to my fellow Quitters that I'm addicted to hostas Terrie. Don't hold it against me.
Dcat, do you have any you can divide and bring to the RU? ;~)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I believe I do TC, not many but I got em. Im going to talk to my SIL too, she has some beautiful hosta that are humungous. They want them divided and I never offered to do it but I think I will this year so I can bring some up. I have to see if there might happen to be a plant tag in there too, just in case.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Mornin Dcat and thanks for keepin hostas in mind for me. They're usually not very hard to divide in early spring. I'll divide a few too and bring them.

I don't care what the calendar says, it's still winter in S E Wisconsin, but the dwarf Iris are making an effort!

I see your one year anniversary as a DGer will be comin up next week, congrats!

Why, thank you kindly tc. It's been a lovely year!

I have a hydrangea that came with the house. When i got interested in gardening, I cut it back, and now it looks as if it's awakening....

It's even coming up from the ground. Isn't the plant world amazing? And nothing beats the smell of dirt. lol

I also have a climbing rose bush that came with the house. I cut it back this fall, and it's been waking up this month. The salvia is still in the pots for now, because I can't decide where I want to plant it. I just put the pots there for the picture, but I'm thinking that I like it there. What do ya'll think?

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

You'll love the results of leaving them there. If you keep cutting off the dead blooms at 'fork' level they'll bloom their heads off for yu. hopefully the rose has a complimentary color? ~Blooms

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

That's the only problem. The roses are a wine color. It has a few buds on it, so I was waiting around until they open to see if it would work. I'm not sure about it. maybe a blue or purple salvia would be better.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

ooh purple, I vote for purple

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

It does sound pretty doesn't it? Thank you.

edited to add a question....
Can salvia be grown in a container? If not, how long do I have before I need to get this red salvia into the ground?

Hey jd, yes Salvia (Salvia splendens) can be grown in containers. Make sure you have drainage holes in the container you plan to use.

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you tc. Now I can take some time to decide where to put them, and not worry about them dying. I may just decide to keep them in a container.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Blooms, explain better about where to deadhead salvia please. and also snaps if you know.
One day I walk over to the crepe myrtles in the park that are covered in Spanish Moss, look as lifeless as mine do, and 2 days later they are covered with new leaves. My Alfalfa Tea scared many plants out of the ground, or out of dormancy.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

those particular salvia usually start sending out side shoots anyway, but you just cut back to *good* leaves and they will branch [usually from just below] and make more and more.

They will look tired and start to fade or even brown in the opposite order of opening, just like snaps. which I do the same thing with.

other salvias will behave differently. some want cutting clear back at basal starts, such as Mexican Sage. If you cut that one at the base of just the flower it puts out wiggly limp stems and loses uprightness.

I'm not x-spurt just seat of pants gardener.

Here are a couple of signs of spring in my garden. We had much warmer weather the first part of March, now it is April and still feels like Mar.

Ahhh, the aroma off that hyacinth has permeated all the way to western PA Donna! It and the tulip are gorgeous. Still nothing in bloom in my yard.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I purchased a pink hyacinth half open on sale. It permiated this living room with deliscious smells for a solid week. The best ever. Those open at WM today didn't smell!
