Maya Cuttings

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

They're here!!!!! Stuck them in water already... come on warm weather...

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

my cryptic way of asking what you thought about the statement/question.

FANTASTIC DAY! Sun is out, ran gas out of the snowblower, changed oil in the tiller and it fired on first pull. Moved the compost bin over, then moved over the 5'x6' pile of shredded leaves and have tilled and working on my first spring project. 'Colorado corner' with the new windmill and rocks from the trip then move 3 rose bushes and plant new clematis at the base when they come in.
Oh happy day!
I'm dirty and the beer is cold!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Some of these cuttings may look small but they are full of growing points rich in meristemic tissue .

These are excellent candidates and should grow rapidly.

lol 8ft! Our day here is gray and rainy - but we NEEDED this rain very badly. We aren't going to be able to catch up from our lack of snow and rain so far this year - they are already talking about limiting our water use this summer. Fortunately most of my perennials are drought tolerant.

I think a day like this calls for a movie on Lifetime Television and a glass of wine, oh - and a notebook and pen to write down garden ideas as they come to me.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Scooterbug...have you mailed my cuttings...I am such a worry wort. I braved a downpour to goto the POffice but nothing. Have they lost them? OH NOooooooooooooooo.

Carol

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Scooterbug, my Maya babies arrived today in PERFECT condition. Soaking in water this evening. Is there a special soil I should use to put the cuttings? Are we going to get a form or should each person keep their own notes?

Thanks again, Kell and Scooterbug. I am thrilled beyond words.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh boy, doing the happy dance here! Just crawled in after 8 hours in the garden and thought I was too tired to move...guess I just needed the right motivation!

Thank you, Kell, for sharing. I am so thrilled and will take good care of your baby. Thank you, Scooterbug for organizing this. I will get a check out to you in Monday mornings' mail. I am sorry I didn't see this sooner.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

nothing of today for me . maybe monday.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Carol,

I'm using the first post at the top of this thread as a ledger.

I update it everytime there is something new.

I posted (mailed) your cuttings 3/23

Don't got to the PO tomorrow ... lol

Vossner,

Personally , I like seed starter and 3 " peat pots.
or you could use a good organic potting mix ( maybe add a little perlite or course sand to increase the drainage properties).

This is just what works for me. Many of you have your own way of doing this.
Do what usually works for you .

Once I rooted a bunch of brugs pure perlite.

Now ........... B R E A T H E ! !

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Sorry Scoots...forgot the golden rule: Read First/Talk Later. Thanks. Think I'll pass on tomorrow LOL and try on Monday.

Nightynigh...

Carol

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i got mine today . they are in a glass of water now as its way to cold to go out side. cold front came in over the weekend with thunderstorms and now freezing wind.

okay now what do i do?? keep a diary or answer some questions or just report on their progress??

thanks Marie

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Just grow it and maybe keep notes on the blooms , growing conditions and variegation.

We can compare notes later this year.

8ftbed started a thread, you could check that out if you like .......... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/494337/

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm glad the Money order got to you and all is well. :-)

I'll be moving my son, DL, and new GD in with us from Savannah the upcoming weekend so I wanted to make sure I was going to be here. Do you have any idea when you'll be mailing the cuttings?

Thanks
Julie

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Yay , Carols cuttings arrived in good shape after being in that little dark box for a week .... whew !

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

YES...they are here. The older cut, arriving with nubbies, went straight into seeding soil. The greener one is in water for a day or so...then into soil...OOOOoooo this is exciting. Am looking for blooms tomorrow.!!!

8ft...are you gonna post a "regime" to follow? Weekly reports....every month....que?

Carol

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I just started my own thread and thought I'd post updates of what I was doing, what the plants were doing. I kind of thought the other field testers would do the same. Not being a scientific, controlled study I also thought we'd all just grow them out with our normal methods. The only thing is, we'd kind of keep track of what we did.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Fun Project objective is to observe the effects of weather in different parts of the country .

Noting the bloom color and if the amount of variegation is affected ?

Starting with cuttings from the same plant gives us a level field for comparison.

I would also like info if it is a bug magnet and how it stands up to heat, cold or wind.

This is just for fun since Maya is already a well established cultivar.

Then at the end of the Summer we can all compare notes.

This is just an example of info you could save ..............Add lines as you wish

I copied it into word so I can put a little more space between the lines for extra notes and because I write big!

Thanks so much for making that up for us, it will be a big help in collecting the information that is needed. I will have to find some of the threads on pollen collection so I know what I am doing! I am sure there are a bunch on older posts that I can find!

I looked this morning and realized mine had been mailed so I am really getting excited now.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Alice, I made it smaller to save room here

Gratiot, WI(Zone 5b)

Shirley, I've moved mine to WordPerfect also. I hope you don't mind but I've made one addition to the form. Under "Container Grown", I've put:

Soil Type/Mix(s) Ground_____________
Container_____________

If you think this is unnessecary let me know. I just thought that keeping track of this might help others in the future, and contribute to the overall information/results of our little test. What do you think?

I've been thinking about trying one in ground and one container, as I believe it was 8ftbed that said he was going to try the same. I figure the more variables we have, the more info./results we'll be able to compile. Yes? or am I trying to hard?

Richard

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

works for me!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

me too rich...because I am planning on doing both container, ground and different type soil :)

Scoot, thanks for taking the time to prepare the b. MAYA Observation sheet, it will be wonderful to have when it's time to compare notes. And for making it possible for each of us to receive cuttings of Kell's to experiment with, both of you, thank you! You did a great job! *hats off to ya's*

I second that BrugAddict

Linda

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I third it

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Ric, you can add what ever you need to . There are NO RULES.

Just growing these the way we normally do .

The outcome may or may not show different results to other's methods.

The comments feature at the end of the form will get pretty long by the end of the Summer.

Categorizing these comments could be helpful.

I keep copies on a clipboard with extra sheets of notebook paper behind it and a pen tied to it.

Got in the habit of tucking it under my arm while grabbing my cup o coffee and heading out every morning for the plant's Daily Pep Talks or Compost Heap Threats ....... LOL

Too many times I forgot what I knew I could remember when I got back in the house.

Another important thing I do is to keep a baggie with some name stakes & a pencil tucked somewhere in the garden. Hate it when I stick a broken plant part on the ground and forget what it was.
