Variegated brugs

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Wow - what beautiful Brugs!
Shirley, does MAya vary from white to pink in the same plant?
I am glad to see how little sun Snowbank needs; I have a 3 year old plant that has never bloomed; I 'll aim for a shady spot this spring.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

kell where are you getting your miner, I have looked everywhere

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Polly, it generally changes to a light peach for me. It's just that all the blooms don't open at the same time, so some look white for a day.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Candy got hers from Navletts...here in CA.! I haven't seen it for sale anywhere either!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Gosh they are all doing so well for you all. I have lost 2 Snowbanks and a Maya. Trying a 3rd Snowbank this year and another Maya

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

So sorry about that, Donna. That is a darn shame. Maybe the third time is the charm?

Kell, I find it hard to believe that you could be bad at anything. LOL about the Frosty Pink flowers! You'll have to keep her away from your other babies so the Frosty Pink flower doesn't pollinate some of your other beauties and muck up the purebred line! LOL! That sounded kind of prejudicial, didn't it? Sorry, Frosty Pink. It is beautiful in its own right:-)

My Maya blooms look white too for a day or so before turning a peach color.

Your plants look so healthy Clare...I really like the white flower on Maya and wish she would stay that way!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Margie. Actually, my plant looked (past tense) really healthy there. For some reason, Maya started to turn yellow and slowly died back this winter. It seemed like it was rotting from the top. This was my only brug to do this. My Ecuador Pink always has a little branch dieback in the winter, but Maya just started turning yellow. I lost two whole branches, and then I cut off another whole branch to make cuttings in case the whole plant was dying. Fortunately, one of the branches stayed green so I am left with a much smaller plant, but at least I still have her. She might be a little crowded in that container with the coleus and the Swedish Ivy, and she might have been too wet for the wintertime. I like the white blooms too. Very striking.

probably old news for most but I just stumbled onto this when I googled variegated suaveolens which was supposed to be my other var brug.

http://www.americanbrugmansia-daturasociety.org/brugmansia%20comparisons.htm

Anyway, I thought it might be handy. Mentions and shows examples of how the variegation will change according to environment. So FL, CA and IL could take cuttings of the same plant, grow them out and look like 3 different plants.
I guess.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks for that link, 8ftbed. I had seen that page before and had forgotten about it. I always thought that Maya was the same as Sunset. Are they two different brugs?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, thank you for the link...so much to learn about brugs...no time for housework!!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

ohhh, I just had a thought. Maybe we could do our own test? Several of us from different locales all get variegated cuttings or starters from the same source and grow them out while attempting to each give them the same lighting, food and water.

just a thought but it could be done.

8ftbed, now that is a thought a group experiment, wouldn't surprise me if you had us all jumping to try this LOL. FIrst find a source that we all can buy from , they probably wouldn't begin to wonder why all their varigated Brugs were selling out.

I already have mine from TJ...from Country
Gardens....

http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/2470/

I have a maya from TJ !

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have several Mayas. I will cut off some big pieces and ship them to one person only. I have no time. I can't even root them for you, though they root so easily. I will do this if a regular Brug Daver will volunteer to ship them on to regular Brug Davers who want to experiment.

And when all recipients get theirs to grow, to repay this kind gesture, you all need to send on a piece free to another Brug Daver newbie to make their day!

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

KELL, I would be glad to be a part of this and be sure to ship to to other Brug Davers . Let me know ?
JoAnn

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Kell, that is really nice of you, and you too, JoAnn, to volunteer to distribute!.....I just love the DG spirit of sharing.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Kell, i would be more than glad to do the job of shipping for u. common sense tells me that it will still be too cold to send cuttings out north or east of Calif. i could be wrong, i stand corrected if i am.

u know i have tons of priority boxes, due to my business online. i can ship to others provided they send one priority postage to cover shipping. i got the ink to print labels. lmk

edited to add: i also have paypal acct., and online stamp account. it will not be any hassle for me be on line at the post office. all i have to do is drop ship the pkgs for shipping at the post office.

once i get the cuttings [IF i will be designated that is] or payment for shipping postage, i can ship immediately, provided i am told to ship on later date. brug cuttings are very vulnerable to cold temperatures.

Well, I'm not an organizer but since it seems my wayward seed of an idea is putting down roots, I have another input.

If the designated shipper has or would setup a paypal account to receive $$, I'd send you a quick 20 to cover mine and as far as it goes.

Looks like we've got a couple of OHs, NY, IL and CA to grow?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've never had any trouble with Priority mail during the winter. At least here, my mailman keeps the packages inside his truck until they are delivered, so they never freeze. Another week or two should make a big difference in the temps too. I'd bet everything would ship okay. The main thing is that someone be at home to get the mail in the cold states.

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

8ftbed, I thought it was a great idea, and believe me I would coordinate with you on the experiment. It was your idea and it would be you to tell us want schedule, fertilzer and water schedule to use so we all do it the same LOL.

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

sry forgot I am home all the time, retired just my GH and Hubby LOL

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey I just learned how to spell brug and am working on pronouncing brugmansia. :)

Maybe the care and feeding shouldn't be regimented. ?
Another little part of the trial may show how versatile brugs actually are if we all have successful plants that grow and bloom although we feed and water differently. Maybe someone will grow in a container rather than in-ground. What would be interesting is that we all start with the same source at the same time with periodic picture updates for comparison.

Since I've been searching out info I could find on these plants it seems a common thought is that bloom color and now the amount of variegation is affected by temperature. I know theres roses whose bloom color is affected by temp and humidity as well.

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

I was hoping to order a Maya plant, though I've had trouble finding one.
Please include me as a part of the experiment - I'll put my cutting in the GH until spring.
If MaVie is chosen, I'll send a paypal payment pronto.

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

i agree that who ever get the cuttings, i want to be apart of the experiment, so please include me.
JoAnn

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

JoAnn, MaVie ??? Soon as ya'll decide who'll be the shipper, Kell could send the cuttings and get the party started.

Kell - Thanks for the offer by the way. In fact, let me know what it costs you to send I'll reimburse you. LMK via mail how you'd like it. Thanks again.

I'm getting anxious ladies. :)

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I am just sick because my Maya lost her leaves, and they looked like they were burned, I had her about 8" below the light and found out it was too close, and that the varigated ones do not like to be that close, guess the same thing about too much sun. now I am hoping I can save her

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I am going to get either a Maya or a Snowbank can someone please tell which of the two they like the best, or is there really that much difference?

Linda

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Doris, what kind of a light did you have her under? The normal plant lights, florescent, or even light bulbs wouldn't be too much for her. The expensive lights would be too hot at that distance. Now, if you sprayed her and she was wet and under light, I'd say the spray may have burned her. Maya has always been able to withstand full sun for me. She will get new leaves. That is the nice thing about brugs. They do come back from all kinds of troubled times.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well Linda, Maya is much more aggressive than Snowbank. Later I will take a picture of the leaves side by side.

What kind of lights do you have it under Doris? Even if it has no leaves, it can come back easily, just do not over water. Without leaves it won't use up the water in the soil very fast.

Scoot had emailed me before I looked at this thread, I had no idea so many would want to do all that work. You all are so sweet wanting to do this for everyone. And Ma Vie, I do not want you doing any such work. You need to rest and gather your strength to fully recover. THANK YOU!

I will send them to Scoot tomorrow. I need to get a couple of those boxes from the PO, the all you can stuff ones.

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Doris, I have found Snowbank to be somewhat delicate, and Shirley's recommendation to put it in the shade is good advice.
My three year old plant, presently in the GH, has never bloomed. The foliage is lovely, 'tho.
From what the others are saying, Maya sounds much hardier and more vigorous.
Kell, it is a nice offer you have made - and it will be fun seeing whose does well and thrives.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Scooter - you want help tagging and bagging? There's an outside chance you may have them Saturday and you're even closer to me than Renee. LMK

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

hey Scoot, just be sure to tag one with my name on it LOL, I want to play with everyone. Sounds like alot of fun keeping track of 8ftbed's experiment.

Thank you Kell for the generous offer, And as usual the pic is beautiful.

Hey Scoot if you tag one for me, let me know I will send some cash to help out with the shipping.

This group growing effort is so exciting.

You simply must keep everyone informed of every detail of this experiment. Maybe some of the other "Davers" can "grow along" with you using the brugs they have.

Of course your results will be much more meaningful, but concise growing details will be so beneficial to many inexperienced Brug growers. Like they say about speech writing, it is essential to repeat three times the important facts to ensure your audience retains them.

Maybe this will be the magic number three thread for some of the other “Davers” who are attempting to grow Brugs.

Bless you for taking on this exciting challenge!!!!

Scoot, I'd love a Maya cutting - only if you have enough, and it's convenient (ha!), will paypal work for postage? I've really had good luck rooting with my bubbler...

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Sherry are you setting your cuttings down into gravel or anything, or just proppped up in a bit of water with aeration? Seen/heard of it both ways and am just curious.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Here is a photo of my Snowbank last summer. it is trying to bloom in the gh now. DonnaS

Mine has never bloomed. Yours is sure pretty Donna. I love it. And look at all the little leaves going up the stem.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

8ft, I used smooth river stones from WalMart - the main reason I used them was to keep the plastic waste baskets from tipping over. By the time I got the river stones and the bubbler stones and stuck toothpicks in the ends of the cuttings, they had already rooted. I really like the weight of the river stones because they would have been on the floor several times because I have some t-a-l-l cuttings, now rootings. My Rosamond just started blooming, in the bubbler, in the GH she is so pretty!!!
