I planted my sweet peas right after sprouting, and they hid quietly until April, at which point they started growing nicely.
How is your Winter sowing going???
Anita,
Your database is great! Thank you.
When the same plant is listed twice and one entry says it germinated but
the other says no; does that mean that 2 people tried and got different results?
Dave
Yes, that is how I understood it. I love that Ron took the time list the zones as well. Quite a job!
Ron must be a patient man!
I would agree - I never met him - only through the GW website. I know he passed the baton this year. Can you blame him!!!
Have you done much w/sing Dave?
Anita, I'm trying it for the first time. Have 8 containers ready but I needed tape. They have been waiting in my garage untill I found the aluminum tape someone suggested. They will get out on Saturday.
I'm psyched!
Hollyhocks, foxgloves, Lupines, tomatoes, Kiss me over the garden gate and butterfly weed.
You've been at this a while?
Dave, this is my first year too. I went nuts and started a whole database to track everything. I'm as psyched as you! I never did anything with seed before, but I love to garden. I got tired of paying the nurseryman, so I thought I'd give this a try. Here's what I've sown so far.

Anita,
Hey ,watch it now...I resemble that (nurseryman/person) remark.....LOL
Does it count when you sew seeds in Jan. on light benches inside as winter sewing?Tomatoes I sewed on 1/26 are popping up.
P
sure why not - just a different method! You are still sowing in winter! :)
Oh Anita, will you come be my personal organizer.. Thats amazing!! The best I can expect is to have a cut venetian shade marker in my pots
Carmen, (Pins) your wintersowing too!! I want to do sweet peas this year too. Thsi is so excting. Will I be seeing you tomorrow at the GPPA and ABG symposium? http://www.georgiaperennial.org/events/2006/schedule.htm
Susan
I wish I could go. I have tons of stuff to do tomorrow, though. Take good notes and let us know all the neat stuff you find out, okay?
You'd better hurry with your sweet peas. If you don't get them going soon it'll be too hot for them to bloom.
Oh!! Thanks for the tip and I will certainly take notes and get a pic with Dr. Armitage!!
Susan
Sure Susan - I'd love to be!!!
So far so good, I am worried about a few of them that should be showing signs of life but nothing.... :(

georgiagarden, I got clematis for wintersowing but then read they need 70° to sprout so I've got them on top of the refrigerator. What are your day/night temps?
WOW - You've been a busy little beaver!!! way to go!
I make my holes in the bottom of my milk jugs with an ice pick. I don't think I've ever used that ice pick for ice. LOL. I don't even know where it came from. Maybe a shower gift when I got married nearly 31 years ago?
LOL
Wow GA, your my Wintersowing Idol!
On a thread somewhere there was talk about a gardener using an ice pick to make holes in a hose with a hole and reuse it as a soaker. She said she just got out in the grass and started stabbing it all over.. FUNNY visual!!
I bet her neighbors never messed with her!
Susan
I love my ice pick. I don't know if I could even make a list of all the things I've used it for. But not for ice. LOL.
georgiagarden3: What type of Clematis are you growing? I'm very impressed that it has already germinated!! You have even repotted some of your other seedlings......way to go!!
the clematis is radar love and our temps have been 60`s and 70`s
daytime and 40`s 50`s night time we`ve only had a few frosts
so far this year.
soulgardenlove,in case you missed the grand opening.(hehe)
we now have our very own GEORGIA garden forum..drop in for a visit.........
Pheadra
georgiagarden3, Whoa! That's what I've got sown. BUT, my temps are high 40s days and mid/high 30s nights. So I guess I better leave them where they are for now. Can you believe we're in the same zone? LOL Thanks!
I'm putting "ice pick" on my birthday list. I'm not sure my husband will trust me with one, though.
LOL!
Anita, If I follow your system correctly. you put out almost 200 containeners! Is that a record? Can anyone top that?
200!!! I think I'd die...no, did you see the container ID - I think I've only put out 20. If you come help me, then maybe I can do 200 :-)
Thanks Pheadra.. I'm on my way!!
I think I have done about 200 varieties in my head while looking at seed catalogs and web sites!
Susan
I planted my sweet peas outside today. Let's hope they do great!
Anita, Not under ID # but under containers. So I thought you had 15 containers of impatiens, ETC.
Well. at least now I don't feel like such a slacker!
Hey, tabasco, I'm in Delhi Twp.
I think I have 39 containers out. Before the snow, 4 of them had germinated (2 each of poppy and achillea). Don't know what will happen to them with these nighttime temps in the teens. I know I shouldn't have been happy to see seedlings so early, but at least it was encouraging to know that I'm doing something right. Oh well, I have plenty of others. Going to try sweet peas this year, too. I've never grown them before.
This is my first year WS also.
Karen
I feel better too Dave ! I wouldn't know where to put that many container nor find time to plant them all! Haha
Karen - if the plants survive this cold, as I am told the poppies probably will - they are more tempermental to transplaning, then they will be good strong stock!
Anita
I hope so
Karen
karen-- good to know you are right there in Delhi! That's the 'sunbelt' of the Cincy area, as I recall, so you will have no excuses for great success!
Did you read the thread on the RU in the plans for our area?
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/573074/
Sounds like you will have loads of plants to trade around! I will be planting more today. Need to try to keep up with you!
We just got a little snow here!
I have good documentation for my winter sowing. Each container is labeled with a number and for each container I have the date of sowing and the plant name in a notebook along with a hopeful blank for noting date of germination. None so far, but I got a late start.
I'm so grateful that I learned about this technique from this forum. In the winter, I miss gardening. Someday, I will have a nice little greenhouse.
Little greenhouse???? Think big, huge! Conservatory!!
I love this wintersowing too. My first year, so I am very curious as to the results. Part of the reason I started a database. I really want to keep track of my successes and failures.
It is so awesome to see new people excited about wintersowing! This is my 3rd winter and it is so addictive! Last year I did about 200plus containers and I was still planting all of them out in late July. My container count is small compared to other winter sowers that do upwards of 1000 containers. That is the best part about wintersowing that there are so many different seeds you can try. This year I am scaling back to about 100 as I need to prepare more garden beds and I want to move everything from my nursery bed so it is free next spring for new ws plants.
Anita,
Your database looks exactly like mine. I keep track of everything. Type of seed when it was sowed, when sprouted, when transplanted. It is the organizer in me I guess.
I can't wait to hear everyone reporting the sprout activity and wait til the blooms start on some of the plants!
Happy sowing everyone!
Michelle
Michelle - how did you decide on when to plant seeds early or late? In other words, I've heard some people waiting with their veggies/herbs and tender annuals until March. The hardy annuals and perennials are done Dec-Feb.
Anita
