I am a new member and a rookie seed starter. I have been perusing DG for the last couple of hours regarding starting my own seeds this spring. I am interested in the "deno" method, but as I read all of the threads, there was one question I had that I could not find an answer for: when you put the dampened (not wet) paper towel with the seeds on it in the plastic sandwich bag, do you simply zip the bag shut? Do you blow air into the bag and zip it shut? Half zipped? Not close at all? I apologize if this has been answered before somewhere here on DG, but I was not able to find the answer. With my track record in other endevours, if there is a way to screw it up, I will do it. So as good as the deno method seems to be, I still need all the help you guys can give me.
Seed starting the Deno way
Yardenman
I just zip the bag shut.
Suppose you could blow it up 1/2 or even all the way. Never tried as it just never occurred to me to do it that way.
Don't think you can mess it up either way.
I zip mine shut too. One year I had about 50 or so taped to my dining room window. LOL I bet my neighbors that I had really flipped out.
Hi Yardenman, how odd/interesting that you posted that question--the SAME thing was driving me crazy last night searching for that info, too! It sounds to me like people just closed them up, although I did see a couple of references to blowing a little air into the bags...
I'm a rookie at seedstarting too--and I'm looking at all my plastic bags and wondering what to do next...think it's too cold to tape them to the window, so I've got them under a grow lite. With my luck, I'll find out they need dark to germinate...
If you haven't checked them out already--here are a couple good links I found last night that you might find interesting---I started a thread in the Propagation forum on them 'First and Last Frost Dates'... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/488155/
So thanks for posting and Welcome to DG.
Good luck with the propagation project and let's hear about your progress! t.
p.s. post some pictures of your seed set up too.
p.p.s. did you see NoH2O's posting about the Sale at DeMoyne's in Columbus....sounds like some good deals there! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/487748/
ppps (and then I promise I'll stop!) Here's a good link with pictures for seed starting with Baggies: http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/seed/2003044315027348.html t.
