what is your favorite gardening magazine?
good garden magazines
Jere Gettles' Heirloom Gardener is good, as is Garden Gate. I enjoyed OG but I didn't renew it. Southern Living is my all-around fave magazine, but it's more of a general home mag (recipes, decorating ideas, etc.)
Here's how the gardening magazines stack up with Watchdog readers: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/advanced.php?state=&country=&category=103&search_text=&submit=Search&sorter=rating
Hopefully more people will put their $0.02 worth in for their favorite magazines, as the more ratings, the better ;o)
I really enjoy Chicagoland Gardening, it's got lots of local stuff and high quality glossy photos, easy to do projects. Very practical and it lasts.
I really like Country Living Gardener for their colorful approach and pictures. Fine gardening is a favorite, and so Is BBC Gardener's world, when I can find it.
What about 'Fine Gardening'? I don't subscribe but I love it when I find it at the Doctor's Office.
For instance here's a great article explaining daylilies---
(it's probably heresy to admit this on DG, but I don't get the fascination with daylilies that so many have so I need a long article to explain their merits! lol )

I do get 'Horticulture Mag.' http://www.hortmag.com/articles/german_style.asp 'Hort' has great photography (i.e., the German grasses article), but the magazine has too many ads and promotions for my taste.
And that's what I think! ;-) t.
It's funny that I found this thread. I was wondering if there are any magazines out there suitable for new gardeners.
I agree with Terry about Heirloom Gardener and Garden Gate. I didn't renew OG either. Mother Earth News is more generalized but does carry some unique gardening features such as the recent article by William Woys Weaver on Yokohama squash. For Texas gardeners there is Neil Sperry's Gardens - very knowledgeable and useful information, except much of the emphasis is on the Dallas-Ft. Woth area (zone 7), including the advertisers, a bit frustrating for those of us in zones 8 and 9.
i like backyard living.
Oh brother! I already get so many gardening magazines I never get caught up. LOL I'm gonna have to check all of these out. Thanks!!
Thank you Yuska. The Neil Sperry magazine might be perfect for me. I live about 100 miles northeast of Dallas.
A tip for all of you magazine readers.
You can get some really good deals on magazine subscriptions on Ebay.
I'v e ordered Fine Gardening, and Horticulture there.
Saved alot over normal subscription prices.
Paul
p.g. Thanks! Brilliant tip.
Thanks, Paul.
We don't have Jere Gettle's Heirloom Gardener mag.around here-so I have never heard of it but I sure would love to get one.I love reading about how & what our grandparents & great-grandparents grew.
You can order a sample copy for $3.00 at http://www.Rareseeds.com (promo #2005). While you're there ask for a copy of the seed catalog - it's an education in itself and you won't be able to resist some of the choices. Yuska
Thank you so much Yuska!!
edit: I just signed up for their catalog & newsletter.

deb2000 I really enjoy a brochure or magazine I subscribe to here in Missouri. It is called MISSOURI ENVIRONMENT AND GARDEN and is local news for Missouri's gardens, yards, and resources. I learn a lot from it. It has a nifty little monthly reminder on the back called the Gardening Calendar showing you a general guide to gardening activities you might want to be looking at for that particuliar month in Missouri. I look forward to getting each new article. I like most all of the gardening magazines but this is a favorite for me .

Just saw your post about MISSOURI ENVIRONMENT AND GARDEN. You've probably already mentioned it and I just missed it, but how, or where do I go, to I subscribe to that? I'm stuck out here in boring Jefferson City, MO and would love to receive that.
Baker Creek is in Mansfield, MO and Jere Gettle is a member here. They have a Spring Heirloom Fest in April. Great info and lots of plants.
I love "Fine Gardening". The articles are great and the last issue discussed how and when to prune lavender, which was something I didn't know how to do until then. I didn't think about ordering from ebay--I just went to their site and subscribed for $30/year.
