Yup Bananas are good...for leg cramps and monkeys. I pay my bills though my bank, using epay, and it works fine except for the few merchants or folks who aren't identifiable. With postage at 37 cents, it's worth the set up.
Sarv talking about using the bisquick, made me go look at the expiration date on my big box I got at Sam's....OOOOPS Expiring February 4, '05 So that led to a huge batch of biscuits, as in about two dozen. Help yourselves, they are hot and ready for butter, jam, honey or whatever you like on them. The rest I'll toss in the freezer for chicken ala king, or breakfast, or whatever. Used to top them with chipped beef when the kids were little, haven't done that for a long time. Don't miss it either....lol. All those economy meals when I had them at home plus three foster kids and a mother in law to feed. Every meal from scratch, and I was working full time to boot. No wonder I'm bone lazy now!! When I think of how many meals I've prepared in my lifetime, my mind just grinds to a full stop....I find it very hard to cook for just two people.
Off to get early editions of the sunday papers. See y'all later
Coffee and...Part 6 :-D
Hi everyone. It's chilly this morning, we got a few flakes of snow and some freezing rain overnight but nothing serious. I still can see all the grass but of course not much green.
Julie, I think the blackberry lilys do count. Do they also multiply and migrate to other homes? Are they hardy? When I potted up the columbines there were 6 in the package. Maybe they gave me an extra one because 2 of them were small. There permanent home will be in an east facing flower bed below one of my living room windows. I should be able to see them from inside since the window is large. I thought about cosmos for that spot, but maybe it doesn't get enough sun for them since there is a big shrub that shades it part of the morning. And just because I went by the display and only got 1 package of flowers yesterday doesn't mean I can do it again...... lol. I was in a hurry at the time.
Windspirit, I know that a serious illness in any family causes lots of stress. I hope she improves every day and no more surgery. You all need a break.
Jo, how are you feeling today? Chamomile tea is good for settling an upset stomach.
I think I'll see what I can do outside, thinking of a new flower bed, need to move some railroad ties to make a border for a raised bed. The tractor comes in handy for that but it still involves some muscle. Those things are SO HEAVY, oooooof. I'll be careful, might get my hubby to help. Ah yes, every job needs a supervisor. Back later, save me some goodies, please.
Hi there GOBs,
I get those leg cramps too - not funny! I have discovered a way to keep them to a minimum is to raise the bed clothes over my feet. It takes the pressure and pull off the legs and allows those tiny movements that keep the circulation working in the leg muscles. They have fancy frames in hospitals to do just that, but I just put a pillow under the covers at the foot of the bed on both sides. DH has the same problem and he found it helped too. Worth a try and its free!
Made an apple pie today, very light on the sugar but with a reasonable helping of cloves and cinnamon. Anybody fancy a slice?
Windspirit, hope everything soon takes a turn for the better. It is tough when someone you care about is going through a rough time.
How are all our ailing folk? Do hope all these snuffles and bugs soon disappear, we will all be better for a dose of Spring.
I went for a walk today that was twice as long as it was supposed to be - I took a shortcut! I was on the wrong side of the creek and its rather full, so I ended up going 3 miles further to get across. Oh well, its supposed to be good for you.
I've hardly saw a song bird all the way though, hawks may be beautiful but they scare the others away.
Back again for a spot of herbal tea... cannot do coffee this late in the day! Okus, the apple pie hits the spot... Thanks! I like a not-too sweet apple pie.
I'm beginning to get excited about my FL trip next week. For one thing, I finally remembered there are some good Greek restaurants in Orlando (45-60 mins away) and I'm really in the mood for some good Greek food... with feta and calamata olives and rosemary and lemon...
Also, haven't had any good Cuban food for 3+ years excepting the 2-3 dishes I sometimes make, and there are lots of Cuban restaurants in that area. Guava pastilies (light pastrys) and tasitos (? little cups like demitasse) of cuban coffee (espresso)! There is a place here that sells a "Cuban sandwich" but it's pitiful, bearing little resemblance to a real cuban sandwich, and barely edible.
I went to Havana when I was 17 and discovered Cuban Sandwiches (smuggled one back into the US in my camera bag) and have loved them ever since. Also discovered a sandwich called "Media Noche" (meaning midnight), a small sandwich made on an egg roll also with roasted pork but a light repast for late at night. Haven't had one of those in many years.
Ahh, I may gain weight but it will be worth it for my taste buds! Actually maybe I won't gain weight... my sister doesn't even have a replacement stove yet, nor a coffee maker, and I don't do fast foods.
Darius,
You know my brother lives in Orlando? He does a lot of things, coming from a carpenters family. You will meet him at Okeechobee. Maybe yall can talk there about what he might have to offer for help on the repairs.
It's just a thought I had.
I have a question about you and your sisters' future plans. I shall post over on that thread.
Molly
:^)))
Molly, if you saw some of darius' building skills, you'd know she doesn't need much help unless the health thing means she will need some help.
darius, although Glee is doing well, we still haven't hear from her last PET scan about the cancer coming back or not.. She has told her son that she is not interested in going back to work and will draw disability through her insurance for a year and then take a slightly early retirement.
Darius...if you want Greek food...go to Tarpon Springs...a Greek town that has the boats that go out diving for sea sponges....I LOVE that little town. Just north of Clearwater.
I'm feeling a little better today...but I didn't drink that Citrucel!!
I'll just take it easy for the rest of the evening.
Jo
Hello everyone! My what a fantastic day it was here in SW Wisconsin. DH and I got out for a while this afternoon and took a nice walk in what's left of the snow. It's kind of nice seeing him occasionally since most of the time he has his nose stuck in building his model airplanes. LOL
Today we talked about all the goodies that will be blooming early this spring. I saw that a several clusters of crocus have sent up their leaves (for the rabbits to nibble on...dang rabbits!) and the hardiest of the plants are holding their little bits of green in the most defiant manner. :-) (Gotta LOVE those *green* things...especially this time of year.)
It looks my 'greenhouse' addition to the carport is going to become a reality this spring (HOORAY!!!). Nothing enormous or, for that matter, even worth talking about. But it'll give me a place to get the plants hardened off and out from under foot a bit earlier in the season.
Mary, I'm not sure just how hardy the blackberry lilies will be...but they must be fairly hardy to be splitting their seed coats this early. Boy, I hear ya when it comes to passing up the plant section once. I'm not sure I could do it, especially now. I'm dying for spring....moan....groan...sigh. :-D
Darius, I'll be you're *really* getting anxious for your trip...I know I would be. And it sounds like you'll be meeting some new people as well as getting out to those restaurants. (Eat a couple of meals for me, then you won't have to worry about gaining all that weight...I can catch a little of it for you. LOL)
HI Okus and Molly. Molly, you know you could leave us a link over to the other thread. In fact y'all are welcome to leave links to any other thread that you think some of us might like to drop in on. (I don't get around much unless someone posts a link. hehehe And I really need to get of the "house" a little more often.)
Time to fix supper...btw...all that talk about food...biscuits, and pie and greek food made me hungry. (I like chili too....just not quite as hot as you guys. :-D)
Later,
~julie~
Did you finally hear from your Medicaid application, darius? I am going to apply for John and I. I spent nearly $200 on medicaitons, just for him today. I nearly cried when I got back in the car. It means we will be broke all month again.
Betty, yes I did. I'll send you a private email unless someone wants the gory details.
HI, missed you all. Spend yesterday doing errands, sewing-finally got to the pillow and recovered a chair-nothing professiona; but it looks way better than it did and the material was only $1.25/yd. I figured that I couldn't go wrong-A got to much material, but will put it on freecycle, if I cannot find any other projects.
Woodspirit-keeping your sister in my thoughts.
All who are feeling poorly, sending warm hugs your way. I did get a flu shot and haven't gotten sick-but also don't spend a whole lot of time aro;und other folk-so limit possible contact.
Baked stuff and tea sound great.
M5-my sister brought down some pie cherries from Door County-they live up there in the warm season-Housemate made freezer jam-great on scones and ice cream.
Ready to watch the Monk marathon tomorrow (unless I go to Wal-Mart to find those plant bargains-thanks Julie!!)
Went to the WomesKids Clothes Resale store today for their last winter sale-but things were pretty picked over-so no bargains-drat.
Everybody take care.
Darius, will you be able to post from Florida?
Yes, I shall be able to post from Florida, save about a 3 day period of taking down my computer, driving there, and a day to get it set back up.
aha- checked the Bisquick box for expiration date - it was 03!!! Chucked it in the trash!! No wonder the darn cake didn't raise! It's 3:43am and I cannot sleep, so I got up, got myself a pop and settled down at the computer with a heating pad over my tootsies. I'll sleep during the super bowl tomorrow! LOL
Weather here was glorius - in the high 40's - felt like spring!! But still have a ton of snow on the ground. But somehow made it seem like spring isn't far away.
Went shopping with my 'sometimes' friend and had a good time. I spent WAY too much money - just can't control that plastic card in my purse. You'd think I was a millionaire sometimes....NOT. Bought two sets of rugs for the kitchen as I couldn't decide which one I liked. Kids came over and tracked grime on one set , so I guess my decision has been made for me. Wouldn't you know it!!
Also bought some summer duds - the only things is that they are snug. I do this often thinking I will lose those 10 lbs that are hanging one and then end up getting a bigger size as summer comes closer. I have several sets of three different sizes!!
DH got a turkey out to thaw for tomorrows dinner - yum. He'll do the cooking. I stopped and bought myself a pkg of doves chocolate pieces - I'd have one now, but I left them in the car and it's too cold to tromp out to get them.
Well, time for me to check some other forums - take care all!! Gosh, wish there was an all night chat room here!!!
sarv, I could use an all-night chatroom too. I often sleep about 3 hours and then am up for awhile. But i don't want just any chatroom, I want one with folks like us here. I wonder if yahoo has a gardeners chat open 24 hours. Trouble is, I can't get my yahoo chatroom to work. I used to chat early in the mornings with some stock market daytraders. But it's impossible to get there now.
Good morning all. Stumbling around here to get my first cup of tea. Chatrooms are often populated by preditor types who give regular folks the creeps. Even the DG chat has had it's problems and that is why it has regular day and evening hours and is monitored. There's a nightowls thread on the Jokes and Chat forum, or at least used to be.
Oh look, somebody brought cinnamon rolls. I shouldn't but I will just have a little taste. Later after I have enough protein and complex carbs my system can handle a whole one.
Sarv, I think I have one of those expired bisquick boxes that I got the last time I made chicken and dumplings. Eons ago. If I cleaned the pantry I would probably find a lot of ancient artifacts that need a trip to somewhere. Chicken and dumplings sounds real good, maybe I need to do that today with a new box of course. I would have rocks otherwise and I can make rocks from scratch. The recipie in my 1937 Better Homes cookbook is not good, tried it a few times over the years forgetting that I had already tried it. Finally I wrote NOT GOOD in the margin.
Gotta go, husband is hungry. See you later.
Hi everyone. More tea please! Spend all day yesterday and most of today washing and drying everything that was formerly in the laundry room. We are thoroughly sick of the noise of all the fans and dehumidifiers. Tomorrow they should all be taken out. Just a few walls were still wet on Fri. We figured out that the carpet was laid over lino so the water had no where to go but to the walls, so that's why they were wet up to a foot in some spots. Looks like the machines did the job tho. Doubt if any carpet will have to be taken up. We do have spots where the plaster has to be repaired. MIL put that vinyl baseboard on and it wasn't drying behind them, so they all got pulled off. Plaster 6-8" up came off with it. Pretty minor damage, really.
The part that irks me is the repairman, a third cousin, came Sat. am, flipped the top of the washer up and found the fill hose had come off. He put it back on, one minute work, charged $45. I am NOT happy about that! Service call I understand and mileage, but $10 labour? grrrrr!
Made a batch of Dad's butter cookies so that I had something to send along with my brothers when they left Fri. so I don't need any rolls, pie, cake, nothing - better just stick to the tea. lol But I really would like some...........
darius - what day ya leaving? safe travels to you...
who are you rooting for in the Super Bowl? I haven't decided yet. Probably the underdog, that's usually what I do. :)
Yeah, I always root for the underdog. I'm not a sports fan but usually watch the Superbowl just so I know what folks are talking about...
Lor, I hope to leave Tuesday morning. That will mean being offline incl. DG from Monday afternoon until late Wednesday or even Thursday.
I'll post a last post before disconnecting on this thread.
If we don't see you before then, have a safe trip, and enjoy the change of weather. Looks like Kooger is pretty well on the way to drying out the laundry room. No need for a humidifier there for a while! Got to go start dinner, see you all later....
Darius, this traveling is a fun way to break up winter. I'm enjoying the change of scenery here, DD ['Spin] has a wee little Meyers Lemon tree out back - first thing I saw when I was examining the morning from my bed was the lemons.
Next was an Anna's hummingbird right up next the window where the Cleveland Sage is starting to bloom. A definite change of view from home.
You have a good travelin' time too. ~Blooms
Scary news from my sister. Her son came over and she took a shower so he could change the dressing on her back afterwards. During the shower she found a large lump under her arm. She said her thoughts " let me just buy a gun and shoot myself." But she got to messing with it and it came off! It was a CkG patch they left on her at the hospital!! She said she laughed so loud and long that her son came INTO the bathroom while she was still in the shower to see if she was OK.
More good news - no nausea at all! and no pain in her stomach! Just a little sore and stiff from the large needles that went into her back to insert the plastic cement stuff into her vertebrae. Hooray!
She and I have decided to go to Savannah sometime soon. We both miss it and she is watching some cooking show that originates in Savannah.
Blooms...I just taked to my friend that lives in St. George, UT...is that near you. I would love to see her....we went to school together in WV....in the dark ages......LOL
Woodspirit...that is so funny...and I'm sure she needed that good "belly laugh".
Darius...don't be gone too long...you know how we worry!!
Jo
Edited to add a link to me going to Church this morning....

Jo, nope, St George is in the southwest corner - right down in the corner and Moab is halfway up the eastern border with Colorado. It's six to eight hours away from Moab depending on who's doing the driving.
St George is near Zion NP and has warmer temps than Moab by about 10 degrees or more, esp. in the winters.
And Darius is only going off long enough for the drive down.
Woodspirit, I've been following along about your sister and am so relieved it was just a wee bit of a scare. For just a minute it's too scarey to be real. And then this time it was okay. So glad. ~Blooms
Yeah, I shed a tear when I heard it. Thanks for caring, Blooms
Hello everyone...I'm pretty tired right now and DH is bitching about having the flu. tsk tsk tsk (Poor guy...I had the same thing last week and got NO sympathy LOL)
I just had to put in a quick note to Woodspirit. You really caught me with the news about your sister. I was devastated thinking she'd found something else and could really feel her disappointment and everything else that went through her mind. It was such a relief to read it was something they'd left attached in the hospital. It reminded me of one of the angioplasties I had. I was in terrible pain in my groin area when I got home from the hospital...it lasted for longer than I thought it should...I couldn't straighten up and the pain was going down my leg.
I wasn't supposed to take a shower or remove the dressing for a couple of days after release. Come to find out, they had taped my 'belly fat' to the top of my thigh!
LOL Good LORD have they *never* worked on a 'fatty' before??? :-D
Darius...I'm SO jealous! ;-) I'll check in tomorrow morning to see how your plans are going.
Night all!
~julie~
Jo... GREAT outfit for Western Day... certainly looks the part!
Betty (Woodspirit)... Wonderful news for your sister, and you! I'm sure the discovery of the patch gave her some much-needed relief in laughter after the initial scare.
I'm off to do my remaining errands before Bob gets here to help pack the truck this afternoon.
Darius...just wanted to check in and see how it was going. Sounds like you're ready and waiting. I hope you have a wonderful time with your sister and most of all I hope you have a safe trip.
We'll be waiting for you to answer 'roll call' in a day or two. ;-)
~julie~
Ya know, it's a wonder we survive the "attention" we get in hospitals....after my bypass operation and when they finally sent me home I still had several of those stickly round things they attach the monitors to hanging on my back....and not where I could easily reach them either!! So glad to hear the "lump" was removable....would that all our problems could just be "unstuck". and uhhhh, nice hat, Jo, you certainly look ummm tarty........LOL Preacher looks pretty racy too! Sounds like a fun morning. Julie, you are probably sharing our miserable weather over there on the west side of the state...let's plan an escape....!
It's all foggy and yucky here today. rained last night but there's still patches of snow here and there. Typical February in Wisconsin. When I was little and we exchanged valentines at school, I always wondered why they showed flowers and sunshine on the cards, when we were still hip deep in snow !Up in the northwoods where I grew up, we didn't see flowers until at least April when the marsh marigolds started blooming in the ditches.
Safe Journey Darius! .
WOODSPIRIT - I'm very glad that's all it was - the sense of relief must have been huge!
Julie that even sounds painful - how careless of the hospital!
Just popped in for a quick coffee on my way to the store. Its a sad fact but you can't cook without ingredients. Catch you later! Y'all take care now
WHEW...just taking a much needed break from cleaning...I keep running into things that needs READING....LOL
My niece (Dufus1 on DG) will be here tomorrow or Wed...so I have to shovel a path for them.....it's not really THAT bad...just a bit of clutter that doesn't get put in it's proper place...you know...the LATER things! Well...now is LATER...LOL
Oh WEll! I think I will have a cup of tea while I read another chapter in my J. A. Jance book...
See ya later....Jo
Good morning! Looking to see what kind of tea is just right for this morning.... and I'll sit here where I can see the birds outside the window. That reminds me, yesterday I saw a cute idea for a suet feeder. It's just a piece of a 2x6 with a hole cut in it for a tunafish can to fit quite snugly into, and a little peg below that for a bird to sit on and pick at the fat in the can. The fat is anything solid when it is cold. It hangs on a tree or post or the side of a building. That was at a neighbors house where we went yesterday to deliver a shelf that my hubby had built for her to display old jars and stuff like that.
Woodspirit, when I was reading about your sister I just thought OH NO, and then had to laugh. Julie, you had a sticky thing too, and it must have felt like a bandaid being pulled off slowly. Good thing they were on the outside.
On the Daves Garden forum somebody has suggested that we need a forum for garden decorations. Dave is good about giving us new forums if there is enough interest, so if you are interested please go over there and say so. It really sounds like fun to me and I remember a thread on another garden site that was called Garden Junk that just went on and on and on because most of us have something out there among the plants for a decoration or an idea, or we need an idea. Besides they are just fun.
Does anybody know what causes my screen to act like it is going to scroll up and then it just comes back down to where it was? Is my computer just fluttering it's eyelashes at me? Sticky mouse maybe? It seems to only happen when I have just used the mouse.
Time to tend to the laundry and have a visit with the exercise machine. Back later.
Mary - Someone asked about that jumpy thingy in a thread a bit ago. I have no clue where it was asked - either in Computers or Dave's Garden is my guess. If I remember right, which I might not, I think they said it was because you're not giving it enough time to finish it's work before clicking on another link. That may be wrong, but just what I remember. I'll try a search and see if I can find it.
GOOD morning EVERYONE! I'm feeling a LOT better today. The last few days have had my head in 'la-la-land'....didn't know which way was up for soem reason.
The incident with the hospital really has to be the funniest thing that ever happened...(and the most embarrassing ;-)) but it's good to have something to laugh about.
Yesterday I finally got the nerve to sort all the seed packets I have left to plant before spring...you know the "IBLF" (indoors before last frost) designations that are going to leave me with nary a place to sit down if I'm not careful. LOL
I realized, at long last, that what I'm trying to create in my own yard is the feeling of being 'lost in the woods' surrounded with trees and shrubs and flowers in a place where NO ONE can find me. It took me forever to figure out what I was doing and why. ~grin~ At least now I have a goal in mind, if nothing else. (Geez! Why do those TV Gardens have to make "nature" look SO tempting? LOL)
M5...*escape?* You got a plan??? I'm ready to run any time you are! :-D
Yep, it's snowing a little here now. In fact, my DH got the call to go rescue my DIL who managed to put her Explorer in a ditch. (I thot SUV's were supposed to get you out of anything. hehehe)
Jo...Thanks SO much for that link. It was nice getting 'out and about' on my quick trip through here this morning. :-)
Mary...I couldn't make it past the plant display this morning. LOL I went to Singing Springs to get my order all ready (stuff I'd already decided to buy but hadn't gotten the catalog numbers for) to send out. And what to my dismay...I LOOKED at stuff I shouldn't have!! And I *bought* it! hehehe I swear, by the time next fall rolls around, my yard will either be super fantastic or the biggest jungle jumble that ever existed! :-D
And as for the garden decor forum...I'd definitely be interested in THAT forum. Oh...and thanks for the note on the suet feeders. I think I'm going to set something like that up this afternoon.
Chicken Fried Steak is on the menu for supper tonight...DH is cooking! (YEAH!) Maybe I'll invite Sara Lee for dessert. She makes the nicest pies. I'll save ya some.
~julie~
Ok, I am too tired to type today! I trimmed a bunch of stuff yesterday with my hand pruners (3 and 1/2 hours worth.) My hand hurts!!!! Will read with you though.
nc - even with the best of tools that snip/squeeze motion makes my hand hurt too. And I try switching off with the other hand but it refuses to do the job - why is that? It's like I don't know how to operate my left hand.
Jo, great outfits, he sounds like a terrific minister. Had one like that when I was a kid. Made church less stuffy and we kids really liked him.
Already 'Spin and I are busy at our spring planting, re-arranging, planning and giggling routine. So I'll grab a piece of fruit off the counter and be off and running. I'll check back in later to see what's up.
By the way... I made soup this weekend! It's good too - see what you've done to me!
Hi all...I've just hooked up my computer in the basement and needed to test out all my connections. I guess I'm still connected! LOL
Now I can see what y'all are doing even when I'm supposed to be 'working'! (This is cool!)
~julie~
Bye, y'all... I'll talk to you soon as I can!
~ ~WAVING~ ~
Have a safe trip
~julie~
Hi again. It is such a nice day and I'm going to get on a horse and go for a ride as soon as I finish my cheese sandwich. I'm busy getting my horses into shape for the endurance ride season which starts about the first weekend in April. They don't get out of shape as fast as I do but this year I have 3 and there is only one of me.
Dinner was supposed to be beef stew. I got the beef thawed out but then remembered that we still have some handy leftovers so I don't have to cook today!! We had so many munchies yesterday that we didn't get to them and nobody missed dinner! And for a change the Superbowl game was close most of the time, the way it should be when the best and the best play each other. Too many of those games have been so lopsided that the playoff games to determine who got there were better than the big event.
Darius is on her way I think. She said she was going to post right before she unplugged the computer and I see her post above. Somehow I was thinking Thursday tho instead of Monday. Or maybe Thursday is when she expected to be reconnected. Hope her trip is good and easy without any complications.
Blooms, I think the left handed problem is the same thing with scissors. Few people can use those with either hand even when you turn the tool over. Repetition is something that makes muscles tired and uncooperative, I have the same problem and just try to do something else for a while.
Julie, what are you supposed to be doing when you are working?
Uh....would you believe cleaning *my* end of the basement? hehehehe
~julie~
