Yep, it's that time again...taking too long to get those messages loaded in this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/478991
So come on in...grab a cup (they're in the dishwasher ;-)) a catalog and start telling us what you're dreaming about for the coming spring. OH, if you happen to have an extra helping of the "and" we'll gladly share it with you. :-D
~julie~
Coffee and...part 4 :-D
This space being held for great links we get later. :-D
If y'all don't hear from me for the next couple of days, I may be in the hospital (again). My condition has worsened all day and now I am running a temp of 102 after a nap. My normal is 97. I'm afraid it could be pneumonia as it has come on so fast. Even wearing the oxygen still leaves me feeling like I'm not getting enough...
I'd take myself to the ER (about 20 miles away) but our roads have a thin layer of snow over an ice layer and my 2 wheel drive truck is very light. I'd be in the first ditch on the first curve.
If it gets worse, I'll call 911 and they can take me.
Oh Darius, please don't wait until things get too bad before calling 911. Would the hot water in the sink and towel over the head help?
Thanks, Marcia. I doubt that would help. I'm what's known as a CO2 retainer, meaning my lungs don't exhale all the CO2 so an intake of O2 has no place to go. I have breathing exercises which I have been doing today, and my inhaler(s) help some. Also, I found some antibiotics from this December for chronic bronchial infections and I just took some.
Don't wait too long, girlfriend. You have me worried about you!! Keep us updated as long as you're able please???? I'll be praying for you.
Sure hope you feel better. Thanks for the scone recipe. I have a really simple one, that if it is still on the computer (scanned) I will try to post it.
Had to do a major catch-up-miss one day and zap; all the conversation and other goodies I missed.
Did some digging out and then had a fellow do the driveway-can't do the big stuff ..When you don't prepare the snow blower...didn't have it plugged in to charge that battery. Dug a path for the little dogs, they used it -to jump into the snowdrifts...Argh and my aching back (I use Arnica oil for the pain)
Anyway, there is a lot of snow covering the ground now.
Had to go out and put the birdbath on its' pedestal so that the birds could drink (have it on the ground so that the raccoons don't knock it off and break another dish.)
Orchids-depends on the kind of orchid. I grow a few Phals. and would expect to get a nice yellow or patterned purple etc. for that price from the local specialty grower (just down the road and around the bend..Sooooo handy!
M5-good work on the red shoe thing-I might have a new cup of that same pattern... I use to have one of the "Love to eat them mousies' aprons, but wore it out baking.
Cards-used to play euchre as a kid, also solitare, 500, canasta, cribbage; haven't played any in years. I have been playing word games lately-Boggle and Word Thief (got waxed on the latter last week-end.!)
Yikes, can't remember all I wanted to tell everyone.
Missed you all, have to be sure to check in daily-heck with the chores.
Rats, cannot find the scone recipe in file, will try to scan and post-realy easy.
Darius, I think you'd better call for some help before you get such a high fever and so sick that you can't call anyone. Please take care of yourself.
Y'all are probably right... I just hate the thought of a $400 ride by 911 when I have no insurance. But, I'm not feeling any worse since 9 pm...
Do you have a neighbor or somebody who could check on you tonight a few times and call the ambulance for you if you get worse? Is your weather getting worse? you might get stranded if you are in a major storm.
Darius...I hope you're going to take the good advice that's been offered already. As for me...I'd say "GET your ARSE in gear! And get to the hospital!" Of course, if it was you telling *me* that, I wouldn't listen either. But it's not me, and you're alone there. Please do take good care right now. I just found a friend and I don't want to have worry about her, ok?
My prayers are with you, too. Take care...
~julie~
Darius...you have mail
~julie~
Mary, the only person I know around here is 40 miles away. The woman who rents the wing upstairs is an LPN but she has a hot romance going on and hasn't been here for days. We are not in a major storm area, just at the very southern edge of it. Low temps tonight of 17º and just another inch of snow expected but high winds.
It's only the darned rain that froze on the roads before the scant snowfall that worries me or I'd drive myself. And, if I call 911, what if the hospital doesn't keep me? It's a very long walk home, lol. NO taxi service. Don't forget, I'm really in the boonies.
Julie, I hear ya. I've already packed a bag "in case", put down a big pot of water for my cat and have a 4 pound bag of dry food sitting out so I can put it down on the floor for her in case I'm not home for a couple of days.
My temp. is down a tad since I popped the antibiotics a couple hours ago and I actually don't feel quite as bad as I did.
You can tell your neighbor for me that she picked a rotten time to have a hot romance. I hope to see you here in the morning.
I've been on the phone with Julie and she has promised to call and check on me in the morning. In the meantime, I'm feeling a bit better and my temp. is down some. Guess the antibiotic has started working...
Thanks for all the concern... it was a little sscary there for a while.
darius, please take care of yourself!
Darius, I hope you are feeling much better this morning. Guess I missed all the excitement last night. Regardless, you should still get in to see someone because using old meds isn't the best idea, even if they did make you feel better. Any time you take antibiotics, you need to take the full course of treatment, or whatever is ailing you us apt to come back. But you knew that. Julie, you are an angel for keeping an eye on her last night. Are you dug out yet? DH did one last pass with the snowblower last night, and so far it's stayed pretty clear. The wind died down late afternoon. Oh shoot~! I was supposed to call my GS last night and tell him what time we're going out for breakfast. Another senior moment. What happens when they all run together! I guess you stop worrying about it!!! I better go call him! later...
Good morning. I just wandered in sleepily and need a cup of tea to wake up. Here's more tea bags, a variety pack of herbal varieties, but right now it's gonna take the real thing to wake me up. The coffee smells good, it always does, but when I taste it something happens and it isn't good anymore.
I hoped to see Darius here, I hope she is feeling better. Things were pretty scarry there last night and she is there alone. Not a good situation.
We are going to meet our son and daughter in law for breakfast, so I need to get moving. I'll check in here later.
Good Morning ladies, ...and a good one it is for me! I've just spoken to Darius and she's doing much better than when I first talk with her last night. (Darius, you had me scared 'witless' (you can spell that about any way you want too...and it will still apply :-D)). We a great conversation...I think Darius was trying to calm *me* down instead of me being of any help to her. LOL But I'm just happy I didn't have to go chasing her down through the hospitals of "Waaay Back of Beyond NC" where does a person start with a town named like that? :)
Darius, it was sure good to hear you on the other end of that phone this morning. You still sounded a little on the rough side, so I'll be watching to make sure you don't do anything silly (not going to Dr as soon as those roads are cleared!.)
I gotta refill my coffee...brb........................ahhhhhhh, that's better.
Now, will everyone please drop off their "In case of emergency" cards right here in this box before you leave the table? HAHAHA Geez! I worry about you ALL when you get in situations and I don't have the foggiest idea what should be done. I feel like the mother hen, here. :-D (Thanks M5...but I'm not sure 'angel' fits this GOB. :-D)
Speaking of 'situations' M5 how's the DS doing? Is he going to be making it home soon?
We're all dug out. Mainly because our oldest son makes sure we're on list for plowing. I think our official snow fall total was only 11 1/2 inches..not bad compared to what the east coast is threatened with in the last forecast I saw. I think I saw up to and over 2 feet for them. Now *that's* a lot of snow. And the people down 'south' don't have to deal with this kind of weather very often so they aren't prepared for it. I just hope everyone is staying safe...and Darius if it snows down your way, don't you DARE try to shovel or sweep it! :-D (I know where to find you, now!)
Well...I'm going to shut down my machine here so I can install a new secondary drive. I should be back up and running shortly. But if I'm not, just assume I've fried myself into another computer mess. Oh, and save me some goodies! I'll be hungry when the nerves settle down. hehehehe
~julie~
Julie, have you called Darius this morning? Just wondering what the news is.
Darius - if you're online - let us know.
We woke up to a glorious sunny and COLD day - just now 22 degrees. Kitties lying in the sunshine, we're in front of the fire - DH watching movie - me online. All is well. I'm over my bug and DH hasn't shown signs of catching it yet. So - that's good.
I'm saying prayers for Darius - anyone with news let us know!
m.
Good Morning, GOB and will-be's... I'm still here with ya although I feel like chopped liver. I still have a fever which will probably go up as the day progresses... they always do. The antibiotics are time-release so I imagine they are still working. Just take every 24 hours.
M5, the antibiotics are new, my Dr. gave them to me recently and the exp. date is Sept. 2005. They are specific for chronic bronchitis and sinus infections. Boy, have my sinuses been draining today, so that's obviously part of the problem. My ears feel like they have a tiny ice pick in them and I can barely swallow. But, I am breathing better.
Now, if someone would just come in and make some homemade chicken soup for me...
Homemade chicken soup 'VIBES' being sent your way. If I was closer - I'd be there with bells on!
Take care and get well.
m.
Darius, I went baby sitting for my grandkids yesterday and missed all the fuss, glad you are a little better this morning though. Do make sure you keep taking the pills for long enough - you need a full course or it will come back as soon as you stop. Your such fun to have around we would all hate to lose you, I hope you know that.
Now come on two pairs of those socks on should help - warm feet makes a whole lot of difference. I would suggest a hot Rum toddy but if you think you may need to drive yourself somewhere that may not be too good an idea! So I think you'll have to have this hot lemon and honey instead. Don't get too close to the screen though I'm coughing well this morning.
We GOBs must natter an awful lot - we have only been at it for 3 weeks and we have written off 3 threads already. Dave will be making us start our own site if we use up all his space!
Reading all these recipes makes me want to start baking, the only problem with that is .. if i bake it, I'll eat it and then I'll be wearing it round my middle for ever! LOL
I didn't realise 'Waaay Back of Beyond' was a real place name - thougtht that was just a reference to living in the Bundu. Whoever named it must have had a sense of humour. There is a spot in Wales called 'World's End" its in the middle of moorland and miles from nowhere, the place comprises 3 houses and a hiccup, but one of them is an old Elizabethan Mansion, black and white timber frame, 'Whattle and Daub' construction. It must have been really out of the way when that was built, I often wonder why they built it there. Were they hiding from something? If you would like to see a Tudor Manor to know what I'm on about heres a sketch, http://www.enchantedkingdom.co.uk/FantasyHouses/Mansion4.htm thats not the actual house but it shows just what it is like!
Carol
Carol, 'Waaay Back of Beyond' is my name for living just past the end of the world, LOL. My town is actually Hayesville, NC, population 300 and the only town in the county. The populatiion of the whole county is 8,000, least populated in all of NC, but many of those are the summer folks around the lake.
I'm familiar with the Tudor Manors, and even did some repair work and renovation of a half-timbered house in Asheville a few yars ago. My GGF was from Wales (which has nothing to do with knowing about Tudor Manors). For many years I read a lot of historical fiction, mostly English. I think it'd be hard to hide a Tudor Manor even in the middle of nowhere.
Pills: I actually have the full course of this antibiotic and I will be sure to take them all unless my doctor changes me to another one tomorrow.
I'm too sick for coffee but maybe hot water with lemon and honey is in order. Gosh, I sound like I'm whining... I really am not.
Hi again. Somebody brought muffins.Yummmm, more cyber goodies without calories!! Just what I need to go with my cyber tea.
Darius, I am relieved to hear that you are a little bit better, and certainly no worse, you really gave us cause for concern last evening. May I suggest, that when you get well, you drive around and find neighbors, get to know them and see if one or two of them would be willing to help when you need something. Probably they are not aware that you are there, alone and sick. I'm sure they wouldn't want to be saying "oh, I didn't know anything about her or that she was sick" a few weeks or months from now if it was too late to help. Think about that, please. Maybe you will meet some delightful people and at least not feel so alone out there. Folks out in the country need each other. Now if I could just catch that chicken he could be the guest of honor in the main course...........
It's a beautiful sunny day here, still only about 30 degrees but with a cold wind. This afternoon I need to do more repotting in the gh, I have some tomatoe seedlings that need to go into 4 inch pots, cute little things, all Early Girls. Maybe by the time they get ready to bloom it will be consistantly at 70 or more every day in there. It's all an experiment. Last year I brought in suckers off the garden tomato plants and they didn't do too well, got buggy with aphids and only produced a few green and one orange tomato before I decided to yank them out before the bugs got to everything else. I had tried an organic homemade spray but it only worked temporarily, and the plants were too much of a jungle to get all the bugs, so they came back, infected my lettuce, chard and other things. I got lady bugs and they had a feast for a couple of weeks before they died off. The bugs came back and the whole buggy mess was carefully hauled out on plastic sheets to the burn pile. I have not seen any aphids this year, a few frogs and 1 mantis are helping this year, little helpers I didn't have in there last year.
Probably will check in later, it's a lazy day. See ya.
Just checking to see if Darius has checked in here. Yep! :-D
Sorry...I'm no good at making Chicken soup (even the virtual kind LOL) So here's a couple of hugs whether you want them or NOT!
((( ~hugs~ )))
Now, please get some rest.
I got my drives switched around so I had all the same files from the second internal HD transferred to the new one that was going to be installed. I *stupidly* figured that when I unplugged the internal drive that the new one would automatically take over the old drive designation letter like used to be the case. But NOOooooo...XP somehow indexes *every* drive I attached to my system (whether internal or external)! Now, I'm in the middle of trying to sort through all the shortcuts I'd made for myself so I could *find* stuff. ARGH!!!! It's actually funny when you think about it. Sorta. :-D I just don't want to be intering info into the wrong version of my database or keeping notes in the wrong set of cardfiles. LOL
BUT while I was trying to get those shortcuts straightened around I FOUND an order for 41 Canna tubers that are going to be delivered in the spring. LOL I'd forgotten ALL about them! (Hmmmmm, now what did I have in mind when I placed that order? Where was I going to put them? Oh DUH!)
~julie~
Thanks for the suggetion, Mary. There is a tiny "General Mercantile" about a mile down the road and they know everyone. I thought I'd start there.
I didn't have the energy to take down my birdfeeders and re-fill them today but I did go out and throw a few handfuls of seed on the ground. They are scurrying around in it like it's candy! I bought another suet cage a few days ago and think I might make up another batch of suet today and hang it. When the downy woodpecker gets on the one that's already up, all the other birds flee.
I know this isn't the wildlife forum but I've had fun today watching one specific wren. She goes over to the pile of seed on the ground, selects her seed, and then brings it over to a flat piece of concrete block so she can crack it and eat it... over and over... almost like she has "table manners" above eating in the dirt, LOL.
That's so cute Darius. A wren with table manners- doesnt suprise me, LOL.
What a cute little wren she is. I wondered where they go in the fall, we only have them during warm weather. Your general store is indeed the place to start finding friends, and so close by, that's great. Like you say, they know everybody, and soon will know you too.
Oh Goody, all our 'sickies' are getting better, must be that cybersoup! We're all dug out, and watching the storm sneak up on the east coasters. DS got in about 6 p.m., (his original flight from DC was scheduled to lift off at 10 a.m. and he was so happy to be home, he forgot to be cranky. DIL is happy now too. She's a worrywart, and stewed all day. He's now in the process of digging out his truck and her cat which were barely visible under the snow. How nice of Mother Nature to arrange this storm for a weekend so nobody would miss work. Not. Nothing to do today, except DH is doing his laundry, (one of the reasons I keep him) so I think I'm going to grab a cat and take a snooze. Well...I'll pretend to watch a movie, and fall asleep, that sounds not quite as lazy....but first I'll have a little tea and honey as a preventative for this bug that's going around.
Hi everyone - glad Darius is on the mend - I'd miss her receipes!! I'm still munching on the peanut cookies- will someone take them from me!!! I'm sure I porked on 5 lbs this weekend. It's been cold and snowy and what else is there to do but eat!! DH is snoring in the chair - the minute he sits down he is in la la land = not much company (whine whine)
I need to get busy and finish up a scarf I was knitting - the needles need to be returned tomorrow. I cleaned out a bedroom and put my knitting needles somewhere - but where??? I had to borrow a set to knit!!
Just got back from the store and put out some honest to goodness suet for the birds - enough of those square cakey things. They are going hog wild now!
Time to think about something for dinner? I can come over to your house if you have extras!! I don't feel like cooking today...
Sarv, I don't feel like cooking either, probably because I have no appetite. But, I'm cooking half a package of 15 bean soup (minus the limas which become mush) and a hunk of ham. If I actually get interested in eating it, I may make some cornbread, too. Come over and share it... doubt I am contagious...
Hello again, just wandering though the kitchen on this lazy day and pouring myself some tea. I brought some baby carrots and brocolli to munch in case we are wanting healthier stuff. Hubby is watching a football game and munching vegies, dip and chips. He picked out what he wanted when we stopped at the store this morning after breakfast with the kids. I have very little influence on his eating habits. Many times after a nice healthy meal he pulls out the snacks and there goes the sensible diet. Well, I try and he hasn't gained any weight or lost any. He's not seriously heavy, just makes a fairly good Santa Claus.
Darius, I can see you sitting there picking out the lima beans. Your soup sounds good, easy to make and tasty. I hope you can taste it. If you can't, just use your emagination and pretend you can. I have some bags of that soup mix with lentils, several kinds of beans, rice, barley and other things. A pot of soup might be just the thing for tomorrow, it's too late to start it today. We'll be having tacos for dinner tonight, pretty easy.
Julie, whatever you are doing with your computer is all greek to me. I grew up in the years when manual typewriters were still in my high school, and newspapers were printed with the aid of line-o-type machines. I took a tour of the Tacoma News Tribune with my journalism class and saw that big antiquated machine with hot lead making the letters and then being remelted to be used again. It's a wonder the operator didn't have lead poisoning being in a building with that thing for 8 hours every day. A few years later my husband worked with a teletype machine, a forerunner of the modern computer that punched out little dots on paper and the dots collected in a bin under the machine. They were the perfect thing to dump down somebody's defroster vents! He tells a story about that and swears he had nothing to do with it. Yeah, right.
Going out to play with plants again. Maybe the football game will be over by the time I come back inside. See you later. Thanks for the tea.
Mary...I really *must* stop taking so long to read the thread before I answer (which takes me even more time LOL) cuz I keep missing nice people who probably think I'm ignoring them. :-D Not the case, even though I did tell you zone out when I read anything about your gh. ~ That's a really good idea you offered for Darius about the little store and finding a few people would be happy help in an emergency. oops...DH has supper ready...brb
~julie~
Hi there all,
I just found this place. It's a little late for coffee, but a Bud Lite should do it.
I went to the market today and bought a whole small chicken specifically intended for homemade chicken soup. No recipe, quite simply,
Throw the whole chicken in the big soup pot with some water, cut up some celery, onions and carrots, throw them in with about 3 or 4 Maggi buillion tabs. Run out to the herb garden and grab handfuls of anything that isn't mint, throw them in the pot, bring it to a boil, cut the heat back, put a lid on it and let it simmer til I can't stand smelling it any longer, then fill a bowl and eat it up. This will last me for days and days. Darius, we need to get some to you. I've made this before and it really helps a case of the ills.
Ya know, I think its the fatty part of the chicken that has the flu medicine in it. I could never beat the flu with a chicken breast soup.
Molly
Glad to see you joining the GOB's, Molly! We have great camaradie here, and great goodies to share with coffee or tea, and an occasional snort of scotch some evenings. Although, Jo's trying to figure how to fill a hot tub with rum for a good soak. Or, is that fill Jo with Rum and soak? LOL.
That's the way I make chicken soup... and you may be right about the chicken fat... I've never gotten over anything with chicken breast soup either.
Hi darius:
Sorry, I didn't see this thread earlier. I hope you are OK. Are you going to the doctor in the morning?
I saw the movie "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" last night and it made me think of the GOBs. Our local club of the Red Hat Society is having a sale next Saturday for victims of the Tsunami and I just found out they call themselves the Vintage Vamps!
Hey Molly me girl...good to have you with us!! Yeah...Darius told me to take a rum bath in the hot tub...going to see if it works...although the 2 trips to my Chripractor has almost done the job...but heck...I don't have to tell anyone until all the rum runs out.....LOL
After church today one of my girlfriends decided to head on into twon and have fish at Long John Silvers (only fish place in town)...got all the way there and they aren't open on Sunday....so we headed back...past the church...and almost to my house to eat at a Country House Resturant...yummy Philadelphia Philly with seasoned fries....had enough left to bring home for my supper.
After eating I invited her to follow me home as she had never beento my home in the boonies...we had a nice visit on my lovely sun porch!!
Darius...so glad you "sound" better.....let us know what the doctor says.
I told my sister (MaryK) once that at our age it seems like all our conversations begins with "what did your doctor say?" LOL
Anyone have anything chocolate...needy person here!@!@ Jo
Yes!! I made chocolate chip cookies yesterday, and there are a dozen or so left. Just in time to save Jo from the dreaded Chocolate Deprivation Disease, or CDD. It's so sad when that happens!
Jo, I know the disappointment of going to your favorite restaurant and finding it closed that day. The same thing happened to me last year when I went by a restaurant that serves Cheese Blintzes for breakfast on my way home after an endurance ride, so hungry I could have eaten a french fried Shetland Pony and they were closed. The nerve! So I settled for bacon and eggs somewhere else. What a letdown..... I had been thinking about Cheese Blintzes for days Darn. Well maybe this year they will be open again on Sundays.
Darius, I think the healing in chicken soup has something to do with boiling the bones. I try to skim off most of the fat. I wish I could remember what I read about that, something in the connective tissue helps heal something in a stressed system. I think it amounts to the same thing people take for joint health. I'm sure glad you are feeling a bit better.
Welcome Molly, I make my chicken soup pretty much the same way, adding either brown rice or homemade noodles. Looooog thick noodles. We eat it with a fork to control the noodles, my hubby doesn't want me to cut them, I guess he enjoys the challenge. It's probably just the little kid in a big body. LOL I got one of those noodle machines a few years ago and now we have them much more often. Before they were a once or twice a year deal with all the work of rolling the dough thin and cutting them.
Well goodnight all, I'm gonna cruise around DG for a while but my eyelids are already getting heavy. I try to stay up later because I don't wanna be awake at 3 am.
DRATS, Mary! WHY did you did have to say Cheese Blintzes when I haven't had any in forever! Now I have to find some, or make them if I can find a recipe.
My sister has invited me to come and stay with her in Kissimmee (FL) for a month and supervise the remains of the rebuilding/finishing touches from 2 hurricanes that damaged her house. It might be better for my lungs, being out of the propane gasses, and the mold that persists. I really have to think seriously on it. I'd have to ake my house plants unless I can find someone reliable to come in and water, plus my cat. Fun trip, 10 hours with a cat.
