About the time I think I've seen it all, something new shows up in the seed catalogs. Guess I need to start collecting seeds from this one for trading stock... and I've been ripping it out and feeding it to the neighbor's chickens! http://www.johnnyseeds.com/catalog/detailcat.html?source=&edit_id=2533&cat_id=205&parent_id=205&topcatid=205&subcatid=581&topname=Herb%20Seeds&subname=Chickweed&ct=hg&level=1&prodname=Chickweed%20(OG)
A New Herb on the Market!
I wish I had some 'neighbors chickens' to feed my creeping charlie too - LOL! We could all probably learn alot about medicinal weeds and/or herbs from the local indian tribal familys.
Amazing! I guess it is time to experiment with this...remarkable that it thrives over so many hardiness and heat zones....it stays green throughout freezes here. Thanks for the info. Weezingreens.
Well, I guess I've seen it all now.
Don't think Johnny's will have many 'takers' here in the South....we pull the stuff out year round, and it still stays ahead of us.
It grows here in all my flower beds and pots. It does look succulent when young, but I don't think I could ever eat it into extinction!
*tiptoes in and pulls a floating row cover over the state of Washington in case Weezin decides to start trading chickweed seeds*
LOL Love-it!
Look out, world... here comes the chickweed, here come the chickweed!
I'm surprised they aren't selling Kudzu as a slope retainer.
Kudzu, the plant that ate the south.
People arre really driven by the$$$$$.
LOL!
Double LOL.
I have to say I am very disappointed with Johnny's. They usually have more interest in good gardening practices and promoting an invasive weed is just not what you would expect from them. Jessamine
Notice how they snuck in "harvest plants before flowering to prevent weeds" etc. Pity the fool.......
"
Rolling on floor.Jody
I can't belive they are selling this stuff!
I do have to admit though, a number of years ago I read that it was good as a salad green so I tried it.
it is very tasty!!!!
Don't eat it much though, I'm too busy just trying to get rid of it! LOL!
I think the secret to tender chickweed is to harvest young. It gets tougher as it ages, like any green. Ah, well, needless to say, I surely don't need to buy seeds for it! We even have it in our compost, since our cool temps never get the compost hot enough to kill out the seeds.
They should be arrested for trying to get people to pay to plant that weed! Or send them over my way and I'll hand it out for free!
UNBELIEVEABLE!!
Maybe this fellow would have to be coaxed to grow somewhere... sheltered, misted, babied along... somewhere like the moon! Does chickweed grow everywhere?
Well if it grows there and it grows here, lol, IT SCARES ME!
Let's see, chickweed quiche, wilted chickweed with crumbled bacon, chickweed and cucumber tea sandwiches, (crust removed).
And to think I was just 3 days from throwing the round-up at it. Shew glad I didn't do that.(;>)
close call, Sugarweed! I can see it now, down at the farmers' market... fresh chickweed nestled in a bed of chipped ice awaiting sale.
How ja know I just rented a booth.
Ever the entrepreneur!
hey Kudzu is also edible as are lots of other weeds. The only one I eat regularly is Poke weed (poke salet). But maybe we could restart a Euell Gibbons movement.
Oh my goodnes what have I got myself into? Two UBERs in a weed patch!
Sounds like the name of a song...'Two ubers in a weedpatch, hoein' away... guess what they're havin' for lunch today!
Well the good news is, as an indicator weed, if you have chickweed it means your soil is rich!
THANKS ....A LOT!! lol
At least I know some of my sand is rich? Are you sure?
I think they grow in anything.
I swear I have two kinds of chickweed here. One is a rather delicate type with green stems. I can understand why someone might pick young plants for salad. The other has a darker stem that is much more brittle. Maybe I should start cross-polliation efforts to create a 'hardy' variety with that same great taste we've all come to know and love.
Interesting, Weez. The guys from Terra Nova Nurseries will be knockin' at you door!
Sugarweed, I don't know, I just read it in a book! LOL! I know it grows in the most fertile beds in my yarden, and not in the rest... Maybe your sand is more special than you knew.... ;)
Does anything else grow there? What other weeds do you have? I'll see what the book says about them.
Well, after careful inspection, I don't think my weed here is chickweed, but I definately have THAT in Charlotte, NC at my mothers home I'm trying to sell. Between that and the vinca, I don't know why It hasn't sold. That is rich soil.
I will take a picture of my not-chick-weed and we can see if Johnnyseeds wants to get a start from me for their seed/root stock. I'm sure its some kind of herb too.
Just like us, every plant has a purpose (my belief) and this one must also.
Sidney
Chickweed is alive and well in California too.
Farmerdill, I am still chuckling over the Euell Gibbons movement. Bring on those wild hickory nuts!!
We were just trying to remember the name of the show a couple of evenings ago.
Yes, many parts of a pine tree are edible... LOL
Hickory nuts are good. Its the Lambsquarters, Purslane, round leaf Plantain etc that I began to draw the line.
Aren't Purslane and Plantain in the catalogs under herbs?
What's Kudzu under?
I'll bet it's in a catalog somewhere!
Heheheh....What's kudzu OVER!? (Everything here!).
Chickweed is here also. I've eaten it often, or rather, I used to eat it often, one day apparently more than others. It was so tasty I nibbled on it thru-out the day. The next day, I was kept VERY busy running...to the bathroom. Yep Folks, it'll clean your plumbing, that's for sure!
I love "pepper weed" It taste like radish and if I feel "boiler flu" coming on I'll eat it out of an empty lot. It seems to grow up and down the east coast and I swear it has anti infection qualities.
It just goes to show that all plants have their virtues.
