something new

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I first put this message in General Discussion forum. My thought was that everyone interested grow something that you haven't grown before, either from seeds, of plant bought, cuttings or whatever. Then keep track of progress for a few months.

Judycooksey, explained my idea much better than i could. She suggested I move over to Garden Forum and she would also. However for some reason, since I am not very good with computers, I got mine copied, but can't get pasted to this forum. and i don't see judy's either. Donna

Donna, I do the something new "experiment" quite often, and have had some spectacular flops! Last year it was oca (a small tuber) that just simply disappeared. A young medlar tree planted several years ago has struggled and may not come back this spring - summers are just too hot for it here. But I'll no doubt widen the trials again - I tend to crowd my luck. But there have been a few surprising successes, too - so I'm always faced with tempation.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Yuska, if we push our zones, or something else, we will always have some losses and some nice surprises. Is a medlar a type of date tree. I am not familiar with the name. Donna

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Just read your thread in General Discussion, Donna and Judy, and now think I may have come off as being a bit "flip' above, though I didn't mean to be. What you are proposing seems like good science, and I'd be interested in participating.

Medlar is a pome type fruit, related to the pear. It is grown to some extent in the UK. It's skin is brownish-tan, and after harvest it needs to "blet" (soften) before it's ready to eat. I've not ever tasted it, and at this rate I'm not optimistic!

Editing to include the botanical name - Mespilus germanica - and a descriptive reference - http://tinyurl.com/4grud

Rutholive - So sorry didn't mean to let you down, since you didn't reply to the other thread I assumed (never ever assume anything) that you were either out of town or decided not to do this because there was little response or perhaps just didn't want to do it with "me" as a starter, or thought I was stealing your idea, etc. Aren't I silly!!!

I propose each person who is going to do this make an individual thread with a common thread name. It needs to be eye catching/cutsy and that is NOT my fore. So please anyone reading this thread make suggestions, but for example:

All The Way Through The First Time
(Actually it needs to be 42 characters then the plant name so that the plant name will appear on the second line of the title making it easier for people to locate a thread about a plant that interests them)

So my thread would read:

All The Way Through The First Time
BRUGS For Me

The outline I proposed is below AND just because I picked Brugs does not mean another person should not. The more people doing a particular plant the better because we will all get good ideas and know what worked in that person's particular environment.

Tell me what you think!!!

-----------------------------------

Brugs Are My New Garden Plant Choice

Several subscribers at DG have been very generous to me in sending both Brug Cuttings and seeds. This is a plant that I have never attempted to propagate before but I have gotten excellent advice from an experienced Brug Gardener (who's name I will reveal later if I am successful) and with her continue support I am hopeful.

1) Receipt of Cuttings - picture of packaging etc.
2) Rooting in water, description and picture
3) Potting Up - (same)
4) Propagating area (same and see picture below)

1) Receipt of Seeds - picture of packaging etc.
2) Sprouting - description of method used and pictures
3) Potting Up - (same)
4) Propagating area (same and see picture below)

Sitting out the plants - same steps
Blooms - same steps

Along with any interesting notes along the way.

-------------------------------------------------

I'm willing to do this and would love to see people do this with other plants. Many people are already starting seeds and I know I've taken cuttings from other plants to start so I assume other people are doing the same.

Since the Gardening Process starts with propagation and the idea here is to follow the plant through to the garden and it's use there, I believe the Garden Forum would indeed be the place for these Threads, versus Propagation or the specific forum, i.e. Brugs, Tomato, Annuals, etc.

Judy thanks for forwarding your message, I was busy and away form computer for a bit. Did not mean that I didn't appreciate your input. It is very cold here, but happily a bit warmer than weatherman predicted and we didn't get the north wind they were forcasting.

I did plant a few brug seeds this morning, some from last year and some of the seeds from my open polinated Snowbank. I am still looking at catalogs and haven't decided on what plant I would choose for a special different plant. Donna

Name That Thread!!!

Please read the above and suggest a name for the Threads we will be creating.

Rule:

Needs to be 42 characters so the "plant name" will appear on the second line of the title.

My thinking cap must not be on straight - no inspiration yet on a name - but your example would be an okay choice, Judy. I can't decide on a plant for my challenge - there are gadzillions from which to choose. I'll spend some time tonite with catalogs......could we work with more than one selection?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

More than one selection sounds great to me... matter of fact I think any and all suggests would sound good.

Re Thread Name - I just went into the Test Forum and tried "Grow & Show - Brugs". I actually think it's kinda catchy without being too wordy. Review it, please.

What do you all think?????

Sorry, I'm feeling a bit "slow" tonight. LOL. Could someone help me clarify? Would we all choose ONE plant and post feedback regarding that same plant, for instance, everyone is trying to grow a brug? Or does each individual choose an individual plant (I grow avocado, JudyC grows brugs)? Also, is all the feedback under one thread? Or are individual threads posted, but all in this forum? I often try out new plants in pots or other non-garden situations before I add them to an overall garden design. Sounds like something I'd be interested in, just sketchy on the details. Please fill me in :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Garden Talk Forum

- Individual Threads - a person can grow more than one plant therefore more than one thread
- each thread starts out with the theme name, maybe, Grow & Show
open for discussion

i.e.
Grow & Show - Black Russian Tomotoes
Grow & Show - Big Boy Tomotoes
Grow & Show - Brugs
Grow & Show - Snicker Doodle Peppers

Suggested form is what I have indicaed on the 3rd from the top posting.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

judy, I think your idea is a good one 'all the way through the first time' Dalea ( or what ever for me). I may change my mind about Dalea, but does that make it clear to everyone. Donna

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

judy, I have never done anything like this before, it was just an idea I had. You are so much better, so whatever you think I would be happy to go along. Donna

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm very interested in the idea, but guessing that there would wind up being a LOT of threads posted. I've heard that Dave isn't really game for setting up new forums anytime soon, but this idea may be worthy of one??? just thinking in terms of organization ;)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

If it takes off, they can make a forum if they want and move the threads, but unless it takes off in a big way there isn't a need for a Forum. They get activity reports to make determinations such as that.

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Alrighty then!!! :) Oooh, fun. I hope everyone posts plenty of "progress" pics. My girls and I will be doing some bean seeds in eggshells late this spring :) Never done that before....those would be fun posts :) I'll have to come up with some extra fun "new" plant too!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

hugahosta - your idea sounds too cute for words. Oh what fun that would be to "watch" via a thread.

I'll start my posting soon to kinda lead the way.

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

No growing lights or greenhouses here, so we'll have to postpone our projects until warmer weather :) But, we'll post when we start growing ;)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Please hang in here with us a few more days.... I'm working on a "novel" approach to bypass gro-lights or GH "for sprouting some seeds". You'll think it is cute and the girls will love it!! I'm still testing my theory so it will be a few more days.

Judy

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Okay, Judy. The thread remains "watched" :)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

~bump~

so, what is the status?

I started some brussel sprouts, which I have NEVER grown before. Have one and a half up, CAN I PLAY?

What is the status, Judy?

Tamara

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I am waiting for my seed orders to arrive, then i will plant something I haven't grown before, should be this next week. Donna

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Okay....I've chosen my plant.....ready???

Really want to know???

Alright, I'll reveal it!

Powis Castle Artemesia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not all that exotic or anything, I know, but I want to try it out. It's reputed as being a touch tempermental, so I'd like to see if I can baby it into performing well for me. Perfect spot for it by my mailbox, close to Pennisetum 'Hameln'. Thought it would look nice with the foliage contrasting the fountain grass....

So, what do I do again? Do I post in the Garden Talk forum with a "Show and Grow:Powis Castle Artemesia" thread at planting time and then post regular progress reports/pics?

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

hugahosta, That was my thought. I have never tried to start a thread like this before and I know Judy will be along soon to lead the way. Good luck with your Powis Castle, will be interested to see how it does for you. Donna

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

May we choose more than one? I'm having a hard time deciding. I'm leaning strongly toward blueberry Sunshine Blue but also tempted by honey berry (Lonicera kamkatchka). Maybe I could combine them?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

OK so I'm here... I just about got "put off" the complete idea when I attempted to get the approval to use a couple of Brug & Datura pictures. People said yes, then there was silence. lol lol Certainly makes me wonder, but life is too short to worry about people

I'll go ahead an post what I have then edit away afterward

Judy

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I started my thread off.... I saved pictures of my dead cuttings so I could take a picture and post it

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

OOPS!!!!!!!!!!!

I reserved those "posting spaces" for pictures, BUT you can't add a picture in the EDIT mode, so that blows my idea of having all the information, pictures and such at the top of the Thread and misc postings afterward.

Don't reserve the places like I did. Now to figure out a "work around", but I'm too busy with my real work !!! Later...

This message was edited Jan 31, 2005 9:11 PM

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Itsy bitsy bit confused by all that, JudyC :) I won't have the plant until it warms up and I'll likely plant it in April, just let me know how to post my "show and grow info" and I'll be happy to contribute later on :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

hugahosta,

The reason you didn't understand my posting was because it didn't make sense. lol lol I've edited it and hopefully it makes sense now.

You were so very nice!!

Judy

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/485673/

I asked that the old thread be deleted since I couldn't add pictures to the reserved spaces. I started the above thread today..

I hope you all can laugh with me at the misadventures, I'm bound to have more!!!

Have you started your projects yet???

Judy

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Read your thread and love it!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks!!! For a person who doesn't know if Brugs are for them of not, it seems a little crazy that I just bought one on eBay!! lol lol

I just hope I don't get too weird with all this little dab of watering every 2-3 days and give them to the first person who comes by and says they want them.

Judy
