Yea! Dirty Fingernails!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Wow, I was able to dig in the garden today because it was so warm. I even got dirty fingernails, first time in what seems like forever! I only did some light weeding and digging up wild onions, and I saw a scant few daffs starting to come up. New garden space, so not much to do. I have no clue what kind of bulbs may be already here, but I can always hope. :

Oh you lucky lucky girl!

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

Sigh, will be months before I can weed!!!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I could dig - thru the snow....

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm going to dig up the remains of my brugs today. I took cuttings from all of them and they are doing great. darius, you should see the basement room in Silvermont; it looks like a jungle room.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

When I would settle-in to many (50+) of the temporary places I've traveled to for 2 or 3 month stays, I could hardly wait to see what was hidden beneath the ground.
Legacies of past tennants.
Wood, you could probably sell tours of that basement, lol.
I got my nails real dirty yesterday too getting water oak seedlings out of garden and digging up Palmetto palm seedlings where I plan on putting my hostas in a couple of months.
I also have many bird planted black berries, little thorny thugs to get out. Had to put on gloves for those.
I certainly envy that brisk mountain air you two have.

I've been gardening for a couple of [warm] weeks now. My nails grew long since gardening season's been over- at Xmas had nice long red fingernails. Now all but ONE is broken off!!
My nails usually last til Mar or Apr. at least. Maybe it'll get cold again so I can stay inside and re-grow them.

UGH!!!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Darius, Bobbie says that you have to dig wild onions up sometime in Feb. and they don't come back. Any one else heard of this? Bobbie knows everything but the dates. LOL

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Well, I'd sure like to know because this yard is full of them in big, healthy clumps.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Speaking of onions, it's sunny today so I'm finally finishing planting my BULBS--mostly little alliums--also saw that some of my early daffs are starting to come up. Is this a good thing?

No snow here, but lots of flooding from the sno melt and rain.

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm so glad for this thread. It's been such a beautiful day (65 degrees or so), and I just got in from raking leaves. I don't do it in the fall like most people. I don't know why, but I did it today, and I'm just so exhilerated right now. I kept asking dh, "Do you smell the dirt?" "doesn't that smell good?" lol I'm sure he thinks I'm crazy, but I know ya'll understand loving the smell of dirt. Especially when its been under the leaves all this time. I've uncovered some gorgeous, rich, black dirt to the side of my porch, and I can hardly wait to plant there this spring. If it wasn't so dark, I'd take a picture and ask for suggestions.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

OK I'm for sure not watching this thread with temps here diving to single digits by the end of the week. It'll just make me have cabin fever even worse.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Don't worry meez, we're all getting cold again this weekend too. Not single digits, but not fun outside any more. :(

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Yeah, just talked to my sister in NC and she said we are sending our frigid air in their direction. It's toecramping cold out there today....and the wind is howling so the wind/chill is way below 0*. I told her we are always willing to share.............LOL

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

How generous of you! *eyeroll* lol

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

It'll be a while before my nails get dirty, its minus 1 degree in Iowa and the wind chill is minus 15!

I think today would be a good day to go to the Botanical Garden downtown. I've already looked at all my gardening books and mags and the seed catalog 's , Dreaming now.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

20° this morning with a windchill of 6°!

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Eco,

Yesem, yes we did!

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Now now sugarweed,
You're in FLORIDA so I know you must be warmer today than we are here in N. Georgia- LOL!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Where is Braseltton in N. GA??

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, it was 38* at 9:am. My sensor is in the sun now and reads 70*. The weather channell says 49* local right now. We are supposed to have a freeze 29*-30* in the am. My garden sheets will go on this eve. Sunny, but cold because no clouds to insulate us.
I have moved all outdoor flats to next to the base of my brick foundation. All along the SW front of my home.
Sometimes our weather differs, and sometime it doesn't. I'm only 26 miles from the Ga border.
I can literally be in Ga in 30 mins with no wrecks ahead of me.
Sidney
PS When is Ga's round-up, will you allow me to come?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Here ya go, Sidney (GARU). Usually get several folks from N. FL, MS, AL, etc. Think we had about 70 last year.

Darius,
I'm right off I-85 about 40 mins N. of Hotlanta.

Sugar,
my weatherbug reading on my PC says its 37 degrees local.
Even though this is normal, I have been freezing all day and cannot get warm. To think that I' ve been outside in short sleeves gardening since New Years eve seems a long time ago -LOL!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

berrygirl, I was hoping you might be up in the N. GA mountains... looks like just Roseone33 and myself up here. (I'm just across the line into NC near Hiawassee.)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, between the weather and the HoT fLaShEs, I only have 1 to 4 layers on at any given time. It was colder in the Grocery store than outside this afternoon. I had just removed my coat before entering.
Put on socks and some kind of hat, and a vest. 25 years working in the outdoors of NC taught me those tricks. Close off every room you dont need. Close vents in those rooms and put a towel across door bottoms to stop floor drafts. Leave other doors open, to share the heat.

My right hand man, Ashley is helping me re-do front beds. It's a great time for doing this. Cool, but sunny.
I have dirty fingernails today for sure.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Darius,
I'm about an hour away from 'the mountains' so they're not TOO far away. I love to go there and have always dreamed of living there. I also love Hiawassee. My fantasy is to have a house at Savannah and one in the mtns. A girl CAN dream can't she? LOL!

Sugar,
You have a right-hand man named Ashley? Your REAL name wouldn't be Scarlet now would it?? LOL!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

We're still a far cry from the -55° I heard about in International Falls, MN this morning! omg!

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

4' here this morning. And my outdoor sensor reading that is INSIDE my small but open and empty portable plastic greenhouse out of the wind! Is it any warmer over by your creek darius? I am ready for things to warm up even a little bit.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh, dear, was that -55 with wind chill? My sister in law lives 18 miles outside of International Falls in a Fish Camp...Yikes. I hope they have good heat! It's 0 here--which is pretty cold for these parts...I hope my little daffs showing their green are going to make it! Nice and sunny, though.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Wow, it's COLD here... but nothing like Int'l Falls, thankfully.

I was awake from about 2:30 am until 5 am so by the time I got up again at 9 am it was already up to 21º and now it's 26º. Have no clue how cold it actually got, but I'll take Roseone's word for the 4º!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

berrygirl, are you coming to the Georgia Round-up?
By the way, my dream would be to have my home in the mountains, and one in Savannah, too!

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

21' here and overcast. It looks like snow but "they" are saying it's too dry and we won't see any until overnight on saturday. If we do I hope it's very little and goes away quickly.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

tabasco, I have no idea if that was pre or post windchill. The news didn't say. They showed a couple picks though, I think the coldest was in a place called Embarass?, and the river was frozen solid.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Yes, Embarass. Funny name, but no fun there now.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Yesterdays high here in the Puget Sound was reportedly 63°, no rain either. Not what I'd call our norm, but I'll sure take it.Even found a dandelion in bloom. What's next ? slugs probably. Of course, things will soon revert back to rain and cold, but then can spring be far behind.
