Hi Master G's
I just move from the coast in California, and now live in the High Deser Zone 11 otherwise known as the twilight zone... LOL.
I live in a cabin with no eletric and no water, other than what I can fill in jugs.
Pretty extreme temperatures... but I am a stubborn ol gal, and don't give up easily..On top of that I have lots of acreage. Seems to me that IF I could find a cluster of plants that live in that area.... just maybe I could fix something up to be a nursery...
Any advise???
Abby
Question: Low 9 deg, High 99 deg.. what can I grow
Hi Abbyflower,
I can empathize with you. I moved from San Jose, CA (Zone 16) to central Texas (Zone 32) and went from being able to grow almost anything in my yard to watching things die from extreme heat or deathly cold.
I did some research over the Internet regarding gardening in central Texas, visited the local Extension Service (University of California has an extensive network of services available to you.), and bought some books. One of the most useful is the Sunset National Garden Book. I already had a copy of Sunset's Garden Book which covers mostly the West Coast. When I had a little time, I went through the book and highlighted all the plants that were listed as growing in my zone. This made it easier to look up a plant that appealed to me. I also discovered that although the growing season appears to be a long one, it really consists of two short ones — one in the spring and one in the fall. Many plants seem to go somewhat dormant during the really hot months. In fact, some spring blooming plants seem to get confused, without apparent harm, and will often rebloom in the fall.
I have a well in the garden so I don't have to limit my choice of plants, although, I do place plants with similar watering requirements together. You might investigate xeriscaping your garden.

Hi Bettydee
You have indeed experienced what I am going through! And I thank you for the "Confussion Period"... you know I think you are right! I think I will find the same thing as I go from fall to spring.
When I lived there as a young chicken (19) I grew things under a trellis like thing I conjured up and it did well.
Thank you for making me remember 25 years ago. I am as stubborn as I was then... and I think your right... I just have to be in toon with nature.
Thanks
Abby
