I have wanted to get Allium started in my flower collection. I keep looking at the Allium Globemaster that Park's seeds carry. It's a little spendie. I have a friend who took seeds from her Allium this fall. She put them in the feezer. I don't know if I can start them by seed. The Globemaster is sterile and doesn't have seed. I do have chives and we all know how easy they seed. If anyone can help me on this subject I'd appreciate it. If you do have the Globemaster, I'd like to know if it doubles up. It's $24. for 3 of them and that wouldn't make much of a show.
Alliums
Hi Sanfan--
I don't know much about growing Allium Globemaster from seeds but if you wait until after Thanksgiving to buy them, the Allium bulbs--globemaster, gladiator, sensation, etc.-- can be 'half off' or less at Scheepers/Van Engelen and other bulb suppliers (on line or in the catalogs) or even more economically at Home Depot/Lowes or the garden centers' close outs...
i know that doesn't help you right now, but if you don't want to try seeds and can wait, it might be the way to go.
I think if the Allium bulbs like their planting spot they will double...the danger seems to be rotting from poor drainage. they are definitely worth a try--we have had a lot of fun with ours....
If you're interested in reasonable priced Alliums - try Touch of Nature....
http://www.touchofnature.com/
Great deals, nice owner - and Globemaster for 3 @ 10.95 -- so you could get almost twice as many for the same price as Parks....
You might want to contact them to see if they have any left -- or keep them in mind for next year.
Globemasters are great - one other similar alternative is Gladiator, a bit smaller in diameter, but slightly taller - I actually liked them better. Also available at Touch of Nature for the same price.
Good luck!
Thanks! I've been putting in orders left and right in my catologs. I added your link to my list. Now I have to wait till my husbands asleep so I can order! lol
*grin* - you have to also remember to beat him to the mailbox, not let him answer the door when the fed ex guy is there, and you need to also learn to bury the evidence, errr, I mean PLANT them quickly and act surprised when these wonderful plants come up. Geeez, Honey - not sure WHERE they came from....
Also, make sure you get the credit card bill in the mail - that one can also give you away....
Ummmm, Are we related?
It has gotten much tricker for me - I moved to Ireland on a work assignment and Doug is still at the house in New York with the dogs. You will have to laugh - I'm even considering an upcoming daylily co-op. Here are my options - meekly BEG him to plant a couple of....(oops, did I only say a couple, I meant errrrr, a few ....oh yes, but, Doug - it's only two boxes, not a big deal - yeah, that's it, a couple of boxes - yeahhhhhhhh, that's it, that's what I meant) or arrange to fly back from Ireland to NY to plant them.....ummmm, and I thought the reason for co-ops was to save money....Sadly, I am actually pricing tickets to come back for a visit to weed the yard because he let those darn maple (or is it oak) - the ones that have those nasty £*%&^&^&$£@ propellers land and start growing in my daylily bed last year.
It's Maples, and they are a bear when they seed. I don't know how the coops work. I'd proably get carried away. I do alot of buying with my niece. She loves her gardens as much as I do.
Are you looking for any other alliums, sanfan? I could send you seed from 'Aflatunence' Purple Sentation and 'Star of Persia. I have 2 pkgs. of seed left. LMK. :)
I'd love to get several varieties going. Let me know the details. Trade or buy. I do have some seeds that are neat.
What seeds do you have? You've got email.
Kooger, I have some neat annual poppies. They seed down every year, so it's like having a perennial. They are a hot pink with double ruffles peddles. They are a show stopper. Now is the time to sprinkle their seed.
I have some sweet williams , mixed colors, cosmos ( these are mixed. I bought a slug of different colors and sizes from Tex a few years ago. They are beautiful. )Dwarf Galardia Yellow-brownish red center. And some light blue Delphinium.
