Sherry -- I think its because of the time of year. Shorter, cooler days.
It's always something...
I'm not scoot, but they always root quicker for me in warm weather. I like to root them when they are about 2 ft. tall. That size doesn't need as much support while rooting. Even shorter is okay.
Welcome luckpup. Hope you are enjoying Daves Garden so far.
Ok, its me again. Seems like every subject gives me something to ask. How do you know whether a "shoot" is connected to a log that you have covered up or a runner? Or do they come up from runners?
I'm not sure what these things you call a Basal shoot. Sherry said either shoot up out of the ground or come out of the base of the Brug.???

I don't worry about what is under ground unless it is soft enough that I can dig down with my hand and break it below some of the roots, but that doesn't happen very often. I wouldn't worry about where it is coming from. If you need another plant and you don't need the extra growth where it is, I'd just snap it off and start rooting. LOL! Generally by the time you have basals, you have a good sized plant. Nothing is for sure here, but most of the time anyway. Basal shoots are generally pretty fast growing and pretty darned straight for the most part.
Nice to see you here, luckpup!!! I have the most wonderful news, which has just made my day!! The first thing is that I had a real go round, trying to plant my seeds, not the least being that they had been in the frig for a while. I planted them Dec 26 and, glory be, I am going to be a momma after all!! Guess who sprouted first: Rosamond, Pink Beauty, L'Amour and Arborea, sp. Many others are ready to pop! This is quicker than the first seeds I planted late last spring. So, I decided to take a look at the GH and was I ever floored, everything there is rooted or thisclose!!! I am just amazed because it happened so quickly and I've never changed the water.
I've started seeds and I've rooted stuff, but not at this time of the year. So, how big should the seedlings be to plant?? Last summer I let the seeds put on several sets of leaves, should I wait longer this time? When I do plant, what should put them in - paper cups, and, if that is okay, what size and do you make a drain in the bottom of the cup? Also, would that be the time to use Messengers??
The roots on my cuttings are short and white, very healthy appearing, of course Rosamond and PB won the rooting race, they are very competitive. I know what to do now that they are rooted, but should I let the roots get longer before I plant them?? I did a crazy thing - I cut some TALL ones, not as tall as I want my trees but much taller than anyone in their right mind would do, just to see if I could do it. I started my first tree in late summer and I started it in a gallon or two gallon pot. Should I use the 1-2 gal pot with these rootings or start them in larger pots. Space isn't a factor, my family/pals have offered to help. TIA!!!!!!!
