It's always something...

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

My cats pretty much leave my stuff alone. I don't know why, I just try not to speak those words out loud or ask any questions- don't want to jinx it or give them any ideas! LOL! The closest we came to an incident was when we put a chair in front of the window and I have an apotocary chest there with my brug cuttings on top. Well, Barney decided to take advantage of the chair being there, and leapt from the chair to the top of that chest so he could see out the window. In the process one of my cuttings was knocked down. I couldn't believe it was just one! My problem is my boxer/pitbull who thinks its his job to chew down anything with the slightest bit of a woody trunk and bring it to me. Grrr!!! Also, he has a bad case of "happy tail" as does my Great Dane. So I just keep things above tail wagging range and we are all good. :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Whoa Brugie, don't you sound like a brug encyclopedia!! I am so impressed. So where did you learn about the 68 degrees?

Sherry, you are just going to have to jump in and experiment for yourself! I think when Brugie is talking about the fan she is talking about after they germinate.

Before, she and I both I do believe, put them in plastic bags. My bags get very wet inside. My seeds never rot. That is why I love rockwool. I only peel and put them in the rockwool and in the new bag with very clean hands.

And once they are in the bag and it is closed tight, I never go back in until I am ready to plant them in dirt. I let them get rather big only because I have no room and am trying to delay moving them up to their own pots.

See all the water on the inside of this plastic bag? See the green? Those are the newly germinated seeds. I keep them about 4 inches or less from my lights.

You are right Kell, the fan is for after germination because before germination, there is nothing to damp off. If the seedlings are in plastic bags, the fan will do not good, of course. I have learned almost all I know from Monika. There are no books that can teach as well as Monika can.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Kell, your results speak for themselves. If you said that we need to put them in buckets of bleach out in the snow I would do it. Ha! :)

Didn't I read on a thread somewhere on this forum, that there IS a book written by Monika and translated by a DG person ( who evidently isn't posting on this forum any more)?

Is this book being offered for sale anywhere?

Judy

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Yes, you are 110% correct Kell, one must jump in and 'just do it'. I just seem to start off with big mistakes, despite the excellent tips and directions that I've received from you and others on the brug forum, here at Dave's. Thing is that brugs have such a will to survive that they will tolerate unbelievably poor treatment, bugs, fungus, virus, sleet, drowning rain, drought, hail, boiling heat and freezing cold, then bloom their little hearts out. There is no way not to love them!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

The book was translated by Monika and Brugcrazy, i believe. Brugcrazy is still here, just not as often as she used to be. The book is sold by a couple of people that I know of. Abutilon and Calalily.

Calalily tells me, "They come with English translations, are signed by Monika and are 18.95 + 3.85 shipping".

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Ahhh , another "To Me , From Me" gift ....... LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love Monika's book. It really gives you the basics. In fact I thought Brugie was going to tell me I better reread Monika's book for the 68 degree info was in there and I obviously did not read it as well as I should have! LOL.

Jeanne, (brugcrazy), worked so hard with Monika on the translation becuase all of us on Dave's begged Monika to do the translation. If you are serious about brugs, you must have this book!

I know Susie ran out of books and reordered them so she has them. You can email her thru dave's. Calalily

My Monika book looks like I've had it for years and it has pink (of course) sticky notes all through it, I love it. Susie sent me mine...

You are all such a help, where would us novice Brug growers be without all of this help!? I think we are all a bit crazy...Brug crazy.
This is what my Green Hut looks like now!

BJ, they look great.

SherryLike - Hello!!! You have "THE BOOK" but were confused on how grow the seeds??? That does not speak well of "The Book" (that I was about to order).

Is this info not in it or is the book difficult to understand????

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Have you read the book, Judy?? There are so many ways to start seeds, logs, rootings, etc, and, while I consider Monika's book the brug bible, I do not live in the magical (IMO) brug mecca, zone 5a, so I search, and try to figure out what will work best for my zone, 8a. Except for a glance or two or three, I have not even gotten past the brug, photo section of the book. I go back and forth between the photos, in German, and the English descriptions of the brugs, in the English book, my pink, sticky notes every where marking my many favs. One of my biggest mistakes was not getting Monika's book to begin with, instead of waiting until recently. And, IMO, it has little to do with what is or isn't in the book or the difficulty of understanding what is written, it is what one can do with the given conditions in the zone where one lives...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Sherry - as stated above "that I was about to order" so naturally if I was about to order, I would not have read YET!!! So are you saying it is not zone defined therefore of little or no value???

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Judycooksey, please do not buy Monika's book. I think it will be of absolutely NO value to you at all!!!

But everyone else, as has been posted in this thread many times by different people, Monika's book is just great!!

I think it is of much value to any one who wants to grow brugs! Just the pictures are worth the price of admission. I remember when Monika first posted pictures of her her alley, and we were all a ga ga. All of us ran out to our yards to figure out where we could plant our own brug alley.

Monika was the first one to show us how brugs could be grown into trees not bushes. I would say 99% of what I know about brugs I learned from Monika. Even though I have grown a few for 20 years and in great concentration for 3 years, I still need to email her with questions. She is the Brug Master. THANKS MONIKA!! You have added such joy to my life.

And it is the information from Monika's teachings that many of us "oldies" now share with all of you!

BJsBloomers..WOW!! You sure are going to have lots and lots of blooms to add to your name this summer. Your GH looks so neat and all yor brugs so healthy. I am so impressed!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Kell,

LOL LOL The Brug Queen is now mad at me!!! Am I on the "off list" because I question? It seems to me all gardeners question what has gone before and what will be. What is a better way to do. If we as a group, or individually, can't take being questioned, what are we??

Judy

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I didn't know I was the brug queen but thank you for the title.

To be honest with you, I found your hounding of Sherry to say Monika's (who is a member here) book to be of no value incredibly insensitive if not rude. Sherry answered your first inquiry fully and yet you persisted.

If Monika's book was of no value, none of us that previously posted before your first inquiry would have recommended it. As we would never want to be rude to Monika, we simply would not have posted about her book at all when the topic came up . But we all felt the book was well worth having in your library if you were serious about growing brugs.

So yes, Judy, I was very offended by your manner and your tone.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

So sorry you were offended.

I didn't mean for it to appear that I was hounding but if you will read the thread very carefully and objectively, and I do realizing that Monika is your friend, Sherry asked if I had read the book... I had previously said I was about to order the book therefore I questioned if I should. This should not be considered offensive. We are not considering the wonderful advice a person has given individuals in email or online, we are discussing written material based supposedly upon this advice. Is it worth the price being asked?

Friendship should not be a part of a recommendation for purchasing of written material, one should be objective.

Judy

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I for one have Monika's book and am very pleased with it. It was money very well spent IMO. Many of us wouldn't be where we are with our Brug growing had it not been for Monika's book and her help here. If you want to learn to grow Brugs then you need to learn from the Brug Master (Monika) She's grown Brugs longer than any of us and can educate you from all her knowledge of years of growing and producing some of the most beautiful hybrids they are.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

ahelms - You are a lady I respect!!! Thank you for the recommendation!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Thank you and you're welcome.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And as I said
"If Monika's book was of no value, none of us that previously posted before your first inquiry would have recommended it. As we would never want to be rude to Monika, we simply would not have posted about her book at all when the topic came up . But we all felt the book was well worth having in your library if you were serious about growing brugs."

Are you now suggesting that I would recommend a book that was of little value because the author was my friend?

And for your information, I bought Monika's book way before we were friends. And I read it all and soaked up what took her years and years to learn thru trial and error. I was so greatful for this book. She saved me many wrong turns. She wrote her book with the love of her brugmansia and it shines thru page by page by page. After reading her book, I thought this woman is so special. I was already totally taken by brugmansia. Her brugmansia that she developed were so amazing to my eye. I wanted to be able to do it too. I wanted a dark pink brug of my own! And a double dark pink brug would be icing on the cake.

When she would respond to me on this forum I was so thrilled. And when she realized I wanted to be a serious brug grower and then honored me with her counsel, I about died. For she is the true brug queen!

And if you think any book will answer all questions by all people, you obviously would be very unhappy with this book or any for that matter that I have ever read. How one could put in all there is to know in 91 pages or even 1000 pages, I have no idea.

And again, I must recommend to you, that this book is not for you! For I guarantee you will have many questions left as you grow brugs in your own garden. Which is what is so fantastic in having Monika as a member here, for if you ask her directly, she usually will be so gracious as to answer your concern specifically. However Judy, in your case, she may just reply "
READ MY BOOK!" LOL

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Kell,

Please don't be so upset!! Just sleep on this, things have a way of working themselves out, if we just let it...

Judy

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am not upset at all, Judy. I am a bit shocked at you, but not upset. I save getting upset for the bad things in life that happen.

And I got a good chuckle out of Monika telling you to go read her book. You must admit that was funny! LOL

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

WHOA...I just ordered Monikas' book from Susie...can't wait to get it.

Then I tune into this thread to see which gems of wisdom I have been missing... Help....

I have some great cuttings getting big that I am starting to put out...and a mess of seeds I am going to have fun with...and I can't wait to piddle around with pollinating ...

We are passionate people, we gardeners...

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Monika's book is a great book to have .... good enough I have 2 .. and well worth the money spent. I do not think you will be sorry.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I don't think the book is in question... is it???

I just asked questions about the book based upon statements made by Sherry, then Kell jumped in. I didn't direct any questions to Kell, didn't ask her opinions, did question the book, but I did direct very pointed questions at Sherry. So I ask Kell why are you involved????

Judy

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I guess I am as rude as you are Judy! LOL!

Gee Aloha, I can't wait to hear your critique if you dare. LOL! I have zone envy esp where the pinks are concerned. You should get some hot pinks. I want to see what color RK is for you there.

So tell me, does Hawaii have any of their own brugs? I remember a gal who visited Hawaii last year who broke her leg trying to climb up a mountain at the side of the road to grab a piece of one she said had the most desirable color she had ever seen.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

WaterlooLily - is that the 1st and 2nd addition, or do you just have the in different places around your abode??? I must admit I have read the same book over and over again... sometime it was because there was nothing else available and other times it was because I gleaned so much the second time that I had missed the first time around because I was so eager to devour in the first reading.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

By Kell - I guess I am as rude as you are Judy! LOL!

Shame on you!!!

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Same ... just one on each floor!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh!!! How I can relate!!!

I have computers on every level and they are all tied together which really makes me mad at times because I forget and have them all pumping!!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I'm doing research, keeping in touch, and just piddling. My DH starts in I've tied up the whole system and sure enough I have. Dang!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Judy lighten up. Did I mention I get a 50% commission on each book sold in the U.S.? If you make nice, I will share maybe 5% with you!

Hi Deb, I didn't know you had 2 books! What a great idea. I would make double. Miss Lizzy and I used to joke when we first got ours that we kept them in our libraries that flush. LOL She was a much better learner than I was.
