For what it is worth, and I do not want to get into the fray, I bought one from Callalily for my daughter for Christmas and she is going home tomorrow. I am not finished with it yet so I hope she forgets to take it with her. haha

Guess I will have to buy myself one. 'nite all, Jeanette

Kell,

Tell you what just go ahead and "talk nasty", I'm off to bed check you in the morning!!! Gosh you all forgive me, but I take in stray dogs, cats and people.... sometime I know the lingo better than I care tooooo

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Kell - I have seen Brugs along the road...growing wild, but I think they are from cut plants that have fallen out of trucks on their way to the transfer station!!! My Ecuador Pink has a huge blossom on it today...bigger than I have ever seen...will t ake a picture. I have a goldenish one which is blooming yellow now...must be the cooler temps.

Looking forward to my book... Goodness, I wouldn't dare critique anyone's book especially about a topic I know nothing about!!! Big sponge here for information...

Now, girls, play nice or no dessert!!!

Aloha.... :~)))))))))

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Carol! You would think I would be skinny by now never getting dessert!

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

This reminds me of when my Boss & her Hubby bicker at work, it makes me feel uncomfortable there too! But then I'm more the "ostridge type" when the fur flies I just hide my head & hope I'm not hit!
I don't have Monika's book yet, but when I can get one I am. I do have the "other" book but it's not that helpful, although the pictures make me drool.
This summer I won't have to drool any longer, I should see some of my own blooms. Woo Hoo!
Thank-x for the cudos on the Green Hut, although it's really not that neat, it's so small, there's not room for anything but plants!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sorry Blooms if you felt uncomfortable. I just was so shocked that any member was being pushed publicly to say another member's "book was of little or no value." Especially when people had already commented on its incredible value. And ever so especially when that particular member has been so supportive of us Americans catching up to the Europeans in brug development.

From where I stand, we all owe Monika a lot even if you have had little involvement with her. Not that she has ever asked for anything from us and I know this will embarrass her. Not even counting all the past posts she has made teaching, the seeds she has sent to the US means that in as little as 1 to 2 years, most of us posting here will have brugs of superior color and quality in our very own yards.

She has already sent the first ever double pink seeds here that just a short while ago were only a beautiful dream. If you were here then, you would read thread after thread of us all blathering over them. We all were in pure lust and thought we would never get to have them in our own yards. She has never asked for anything in return. She could sell her seeds here for a fortune. I am a real fan, can you tell? LOL

I will go to the corner now and wear the DOESN'T PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS SIGN as my punishment. I happen to have one handy.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

well I purchased Monika's book and I am constantly looking up stuff, and if I could BUY a couple of her seeds (yes kell, PINK) I would.
Doris

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think that since we have some of Monika's seeds growing here in the states now, it won't be long before everyone will have a chance at growing brugs that have some of the Euro genes in them. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of mine blooming next summer and hope that everyone who got seeds from Monika will post pictures or at least let us know how they are doing. There were over a thousand seeds shared with, I believe, 19 members/friends.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Geez Brugie, go back 3 years. What we wouldn't have given to get some hot pink Euro seeds.

And Doris, you won't need to buy them. You will get the best of Monika's work! Since Susie and Tracey do not seem to be selling brugs, many of us oldies have no desire to see Monika's offspring sold. Or for that matter my crosses. So unless Tracey or Susie want to sell them, I hope they are given freely among all the true brug fanciers, just like Monika would want them to be.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, three years ago, I was dying to get my hands on anything pink that wasn't EP or FP. Times have certainly changed and mostly because of Monika being so generous. It will take a little time for us all to evaluate our seedlings and to make crosses, so be patient.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

What a wonderful time to be addicted to Brugs! Thank you Monika for your knowlege & generosity. I for one am looking forward to these "specials" someday being in my collection.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Kell, here's an even dozen of the Cg X L'A you so generously sent me.In spite of my ineptitude they seem to be happily perking along.Happy New Year, and I hope the weather in your area isn't too terrible.

WaterlooLily I'm like you, I don't want to be without Monika's book wherever I am. I keep it in my bag that goes back and forth to our cottage. The same place that I keep my prescriptions and other things that I can't do without!!
Without Monika and the other old timer Brug lovers, how many of us would have even discovered the joy of growing them! Thanks to all of you mentors who have taught us all about the joys of the Brug!!

whew. tippy toe, tippy toe. i'm whispering. i've been away with my hubby's mom in the hosp. i hope my return doesn't, yet again, ignite this thread. if it ain't fun, I don't wanna do it, ya know??!!

Logs??? I'm ready to start some logs and I wonder (which I doubt) if slightly frost burned limbs would root. Course I will try them just to see what happens. What I really want to know about logs is, do they ever grow into alley trees??? Am I correct that logs will root with just one node??

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Sherry, dear Sherry! You did nothing wrong here. I'm sorry you're MIL is in the hospital! I pray that she'll be better soon!

Yes, I would imagine that a log cutting would have much better potential to grow into an alle´ tree than a conventional cutting. Good luck, and yes -- HAVE FUN!!!

Gretchen

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I grew a couple of log cuttings to maturity last year, and they did not get tall. They were straight, but not as tall as I would want a tree. Maybe it was the cross, I don't know. I didn't keep them because they didn't want to bloom until frost and I don't have the time or the room to waste on plants that display bad habits. I really think that the best way to get a tall one is to wait for a nice basal shoot to get some height on it and then cut and root. Kell has had tons of great basal shoots on her brugs that have made some great trees.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Gretchen, you are one more sweet girl!!!! Thanks!!

Shirley, I suspected that and the nicest, tallest tree I have was from a basal shoot and I should have lots next season. I will start the logs, if for nothing else, to give to my family and, mostly, just to see if I can do it. Do your seedlings ever make it to tree height?? This is crazy but always seems to happen (to me), the ones I want to Y never do and the ones I don't want to Y always do. As a matter of fact, all of my home grown seedlings, thus far, have all Yed at 4 1/2 feet to five feet. Do all seedlings do that, or was I just 'lucky', LOL!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

This last year I had a lot of seedlings that Y'd shorter than I thought they would, but had lots that reached into the 7-8 ft. size, maybe taller. I thought it was the cooler summer that was causing them to Y short, but when I had tall ones too, I decided it had to be the genes in some of them that held them back. Most of them that were shorter had Golden Lady or L'Amour in them. The Rothkirch or Rosamond crosses all got very tall. Whiskers crosses were also tall. Monika's seedling Y'd shorter than most. I had a lot of seedlings that grew basal shoots also. I've never had so many new seedlings do that as this year. Monika had three stalks. Day Dreams had only one, but they were both from the same cross. Strange. Monika said that brugs with strong aurea influence will be taller than others. I guess that is why the Rosamond and RK crosses were so tall. Monikas seedlings are Candida, I believe. Whiskers has a lot of aurea in it too. I guess if you really want to work on tall, it would be good to try to make crosses that have lots of aurea in them. There must be a way to have taller versicolors, candidas, suaves, etc.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Great post Shirley. Without knowing, I would suspect that your seedlings that Yed tall, were planted earlier, huh? Last season, my seedlings were planted VERY late, and all Yed about the same height, no taller than 5ish feet. That's why I want early seedlings this year, to see if I can get taller trees, grown from seed, because from what I've seen, seeds grown here are more healthy than cuttings, started in other areas, tho my cuttings have done unbelievably (to me, and with the errors I've made) well. I think you guys in the class or two ahead of us (current newbies) started at a most advantageous time, you were on the ground floor of lots of stuff, including Monika as a mentor, and the fledgling DG, how lucky can you get??!! I'm interested, did you buy a computer, find DG and then buy a brug?? Or did find brugs first, then DG?? That's about as clear as mud, huh, LOL!

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Sorry Sherry, I stand corrected, and am glad that Shirley jumped in here and corrected me. And, I'm glad to learn this. I knew that too about basal shoots, but it slipped my mind.... Thank you, Shirley! And, Thank you Sherry for this thread!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Actually, I had a used computer, never hooked up to the net. Made a cook book on it and then asked my DH for a computer for Christmas. Got hooked up to the net and met a new friend on GW but we only became friendly at the time because of her stationery. Clear as mudd here yet? LOL! Then she asked if she could come down and visit. She brought my first brug. Several years later, I joined DG. That was 2001. I've been on a roll ever since. I had quite a few brugs back in the GW days. I just became more serious about them once I got involved in this forum and met so many new people who have helped me bunches.

What is a basal shoot? Sorry if that's a dumb question. :) Jamie

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hah!

She has been a great help to me with my brugs too since we met.

I'm so honored to know both of you.

§

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Shirley. Jamie, a basal shoot will start growing at the base of the plant. Sometimes right at the base and sometimes it will come up through the dirt a couple of inches away from the main stalk. They make great plants.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

LOL, Gretchen, if you hadn't pointed it out, I never would have known!! Thanks re the thread, tho of course my part was accidental, but it covers lots of ground, both high and low, huh??

Jamie, a basal shoot is one that grows like crazy out the side of a brug, often straight and tall, the ones I've seen, either shoot up outta the ground, or down low, outta the side of the brug. I'm posting this to see if I'm correct. If not, I expect to be corrected because I want to make sure...

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have lots of cuttings growing right now and one of them has a bright green shoot coming up out of the dirt right next to the base of the cutting. So is that a basal shoot? If so, should I cut it off and root it by itself? Funny thing- of all the kinds people sent me, the "unknown pink" cuttings are the ones growing like gangbusters and shooting up new growth all over the place. The named ones are a bit more persnickety. We will see what the blooms do! The unknown pinks came from a friend in Florida. This was her only brug to survive the hurricanes so I think that says alot! Unfortunately she didn't have any pictures of the parent plant in bloom so it may be a "ho hum pink" but it will be my first brug so I'm sure I will find it spectacular! :)

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

NOoooooooo

Don't cut it what ever you do. Let it get a few feet tall first, the taller the better.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

It's too late Scooter. I already hacked 'em up. Just kidding! Ok, I'll leave them alone. And it dawned on me that they are already potted up to 1 gallon pots so I should probably start feeding them now....

You guys are so great...I love just cruising the chats and reading your banter...what a wealth of knowledge!!!

Hi Ya'll. I'm new . Just joined last night. I've been a member since last Feb. but just now subscribed. I've been reading what I could in this forum since I joined and am very happy that I can now read the answers to all the questions ya'll have asked along the way. I have a few unnamed white, pink and peach Brugs. Ms critterkeeper gave me the white and pink starts that bloomed for me this fall. And love them like my children. lol The peach I received to late to get blooms for 2004. So I'm looking forward to seeing them for the first time. In just reading this thread tonight I've learned a lot, so thanks for the info and keep up the good work.

Scoot, since you mention letting the new green shoots getting taller, prior to cutting, let me ask you this: Are the green shoots as easy to root in water, in the fall/winter, as they are to root in dirt in the summer?? Does that make sense?? I quickly rooted an almost 8 foot green shoot in the summer, but the 'greenies' I brought in this fall and put in water are slow to root...did I do something wrong or is it just the time of the year???
