Paypal, can you stop payment and what happens if you do?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Let's say you bid and win something on Ebay, then find out before you even get it, it is not what it is supposed to be. Can you stop payment? Can you refuse delivery? Has anyone ever done either and what happens to you?

Thanks for whatever answers I may get. :)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I doubt you can stop payment, they usually go through almost instantly. Unless delivery is to be signed for, you may not be able to refuse it either. Try to see if PayPal has a Help Desk, or a Customer Contact, maybe email from the web site, and just ask them.

Certainly notify ebay.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

I can only tell you when I had a bad experience on Ebay as:
Didn't get the product, after several emails and promises, never received the product

I called my credit card company that was registered on Paypal, and told them I didn't get it and they disputed the charges and it was taken off my credit card.

Any charges made to your credit card are protected. If for any reason the product, service you charged on your credit card is NOT what it was suppose to be, charges can be disputed. Its called fraud, to charge ones credit card and not deliver stated goods or services. Your credit card company will help you, call them.

If you pay by paypal and the payee has not 'collected'/'accepted' the payment yet, you can stop it. We did that once when the payment went to the wrong account. I don't remember the terminology used. Also, our son never received an item for over $100. and he was not able to collect on it because he filed after 30 days, so don't wait that long if you have to file a claim, etc. Keep all correspondence too.

If you end up getting a 'non-paying bidder' strike (ebay allows 2, 3rd and you're out), you have 3 months to file a protest or whatever it's called. We bought a car in KY and it was supposed to be an original '71 Nova. It was so full of putty and rust and dents, we couldn't believe it! She filed a NPB on us and because we were new, we didn't know what we were supposed to do so we ended up not fighting it. We should have. I would certainly do it now! Live and learn! Good luck!!

Thank you both for your feedback. I looked all over ebay and Paypal and found all sorts of stuff about contracts and buyer protection and guarentees and warranties, etc. The best I can tell, I could get a warning or get thrown of ebay if I do not pay. I also have the option of settling with the seller. I have sent him an email to see what he is willing to do. I am sure I could just call my bank and stop the payment as it was on my debit card. The bank told me a debit card is better than a credit card because it is MY money.

I honestly feel very stupid because there was something I wanted very badly and wouldn't spend the money on myself at the retail price. Someone suggested I look on ebay because they had seen many of the item there. I knew it was too good to be true and I should have listened to the little angel on my shoulder instead of the little devil on the other one. ;) It's not a devastating amount of money, but enough to sting (especially my pride). LOL

All this over a designer purse! I bought one when I was making my own money and supporting myself at 21. My mother gave me such grief for the amount I spent. It was the best purse I ever had and I carried it for several years. She apologized later when she saw how well it lasted. I REALLY want another one, just hate to spend a house payment on luggage. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Chele, I had a problem last year. I got the item but it was crapola. The seller had strung me along till after 30 days. So Paypal was of no use. I went to my credit card company and complained. I think you have 90 days to complain. I got the charges reversed. I never heard a word from the seller or ebay.

I think your debit card is like money, so it is probably too late.

I just ordered 2 things on ebay after not ordering for over a year. The first thing turned out to be junk, On the second, I broke my rule and ordered from someone with about 3000 positives. And I am going to get so burned. I already know it. I try never to order from anyone with more than a couple of hundred. I will complain to my credit card company and even get my shipping charges reversed if it turns out like I think it will.

Kell, I won't buy from the "super sellers" either... they scare me, but having said that, my own is up to 191.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks for your replies!

Sorry Kell. I don't know whether to consider myself a sucker or be sad that there are so many crooks out there! This guy maintains he had no clue it was not real. It isn't even a good knock off. LOL I wish I had done a bit of research before I bid. I knew all this stuff and forgot. It's been like 15 years since I bought the last one.

My bank is sending me papers to dispute the charges. In the meantime, the purse got here last night and I had a great laugh. Every clue to it being a knock off is there! Anybody want a cute designer knock off for $100??? LOL I contacted the guy last night (and paypal and ebay and my bank). He says he will give my money back as soon as he receives the purse. I am mailing it back tomorrow. He did tell me to leave his feedback alone and that he would leave me a positive if I wanted. Geeze!

He didn't even pad or fill the box with anything for protection. The purse was thrown in a cover bag and dropped in a box about 3 times too big. That strikes me as a funny and careless way to treat a designer bag!

I guess I will run down to Saks or just buy one from eluxury.com I just found out we have a Saks outlet store too. LOL Where the heck did that come from??

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Shoot! I forget to say 191 Darius???? Wow! Have any designer bags? LOL

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Sorry, LOL. Not even anything for sale until after the first of the year and I can get my stuff out of storage. About the last 15-20 ratings or so are as a Buyer, though.

I do hope to put a lot of my mother's collectibles on though, when I get them here. Also some of her clothing. She was a dressmaker and had a wonderful feel for the "hand" of a fabric.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Would you like a lovely piece of vinyl creativity? ;)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I'll pass... LOL.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I figured as much. giggle

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Take a pic of this bag Chele. Nosy people want to see it! LOL.

I was always being taken on ebay. I would even ask them a hundred questions before hand. The worst are the super sellers, Darius. I agree! I have had them tell me to leave them negative feedback, they do not care for they have so many good ones. They say no one will believe me! I used to buy lots of vintage items from about 1890 to 1930s.

The feedback is a joke anyway. Most people are afraid of retaliatory feedback so they leave none or leave good so they get good feedback back.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I do not know how to post without posting my actual winning bid email. If one would want to look, they could go to www.louisvuitton.com
or www.eluxury.com

and search for sologne murakami or multicolore. I actually bid on the black with colors. :) I'd be thrilled to death with the classic monogram speedy bag and I think I may even get one for Christmas. hehehehe

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Chele. The price is $1,170.00 And you got it for $100? So remind me again what was your first clue it was a fake? LOL

From your site above.

I hope it all works out chele!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

$1,170 for a PURSE? Is the whole world crazy???

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I couldn't even find $1170 to put IN a purse, much less pay that FOR the purse. LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey, I'd be happy with the Monogram Speedy 25, 30, etc. I think I am getting one of those for Christmas. ;)

Kell, you be nice! Call me blonde, naive, silly.....whatever shoe fits. The green eyed monster got me. I had the Mongram Speedy years ago and dearly loved that purse. It lasted through anything, lasted forever! Yeah, pricey at $500 plus, but a really great purse!! I really like the 2003 design from Jacobs and Murakami, but I like paying my bills too. LOL

As for what was my first clue....Hmmm, I don't know what happened. I was bidding and getting my buns kicked. I kept losing. I kept thinking the bids would go higher before I lost or won. Suddenly I won. Then I felt sick. I won at too low a price. If I can tell you all one thing about Louis and bidding, make sure the seller is a member of My Poupette! THEY are qualified to sell the real Louis.

I want to say, I did not grow up with money. I was not given much when I was younger. When I did get older and worked 2 jobs at a time or 1 job and full time school, I quickly figured out what I liked. And, I did buy it for myself. I have spent most of my marriage barely getting by and now that things are okay, I am trying to not feel guilty taking care of myself a bit. I know you guys are not beating my chops. :) I just really love this line of bags. What else can I say?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Aw Chele, I didn't mean to make you feel guilty. I just couldn't believe that purses actually sold for that kind of money.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Me, either...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I say get it!!! Get 2! You deserve lots and lots. Soon the kids will be teenagers and you will be broke again! LOL

I went to ebay and did a search under already finished auctions. It is amazing how many of these bags are on there and go for hardly anything. I see "authentic" in many descriptions. How does ebay allow this fraud?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I don't feel guilty!! LOL I have been working butt buns off! You guys didn't say a thing that was bad or wrong. :)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Nor should you feel any guilt for how you spend your own money!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I thought I should come back and update my saga. :)

I mailed the purse back to the seller on the 20th. It made it to CA by the 23rd where he left it sit until the 29th. My big fingers typed out complaints to paypal and ebay and his account is frozen. Ooopsie. They had not heard from him and neither had I. I finally wrote to him two nights ago after receiving confirmation he had the pkg. I told him I would be leaving him feedback the following day. He did write back to me to thank me for freezing his account (ouch) and told me I would get my money back. He wrote the following day to let me know a money order was headed my way. It BETTER be for the right amount too! LOL

In the meantime, hubby, the girls and I went to Saks and picked me out a very nice bag. It has been sitting in a box, in a bag, in my room since. It is SO hard to indulge yourself when you have kids and a mortgage! Ahem. I guess I'll either use it soon, exchange it or just flat out return it. Sigh. I narrowed it down to 2 bags then picked one. I'm not sure it is the right one. LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

A MONEY ORDER?? That's such an easy way to defaud people, a lot of people don't even accept them now. Don't let eBay let him off the hook until you have cash in hand. I just saw this thread, Chele. Ouch!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

All I know for now, he is sending a money order by certified mail. I guess I kind of have him stuck if they froze his paypal.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Guess a money order is a step up from a personal check, eh? Hope it all pans out for ya.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Kimberly, clue me in here... how are people being defrauded with MOs? And why don't people accept them? I've paid for a lot of items with MOs on ebay and not had any problems so you've got me wondering if I should be doing that?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It's being on the receiving end of money orders that is the danger. For one, there is no way to trace them. Second, they can be counterfeited just like cash. When receiving them, it's recommended they clear before merchandise is sent out. I can find links for you -- I'll post some later.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

There's been a great deal of scamming going on with counterfeit money orders outside of eBay:

http://www.nhregister.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=13521078&BRD=1281&PAG=461&dept_id=517515&rfi=6

Another: http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=1829&dept_id=107423&newsid=13643499&PAG=461&rfi=9

Granted, these are extreme situations, but the point is there are counterfeit money orders going around and they should have to clear like a personal check would.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Chele, Do you still use a debit card ?

If so , think it over. You have no recourse once the money is taken out of your bank account , which is usually done instantly/electronically.

If you don't like the deal , it's 'tough cookies baby' your money is GONE!

At least with a credit card company you have them to back you up on disputes

and it is kind of a stop-gap for you to get matters resolved before you need to pay your CC .

I hope I'm making myself clear, lately I'm the only one that knows what I mean ...... lol

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

scooter - not so... it all depends on who issues the debit card. DS had $800. taken out of his account when he lost his debit card and received every bit of it back from the credit/debit card company. It was a debit card issued thru the bank, by a company affiliated with mastercard. If it's strictly a bank debit card and not thru a credit card company, that's different, I think.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hmmmm, TNX kooger,

I haven't heard of a debit card through a CC company only the one that comes through your bank directly to your account.

Sure glad your DS got his money back, that would have been an awful large chunk of money to loose.

Dh had one for awhile until our accountant clued him in , so he got rid of it asap.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks for looking out for me Kimberley. :) I do use a debit card. I hate the idea of using a credit card because I just paid them all off. LOL I guess I can pick one with a low limit on it and keep it open for paypal. I really hate the idea that someone can click a few buttons and rob me blind!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I heard that to be the case also, Scoot, on TV when they first became popular. That is why I do not use one. Maybe they are now covered. With a credit card you can get your money back thru your credit card company.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

SO what's the diff ?

I don't under stand why a debit card does not come directly out of you bank account , as the original plan was for them......

They were to give you the freedom of a credit card but not build up debt with a CC company.

It gave you the freedom from writing checks but you still had to know what you have available for funds ( the same as if you were writing out checks.)

Something is screwed up here .

Catch ya later, gotta go look for my mind .

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I guess I'm not sure of all the diffs but this I know - my DD has a card from her bank, issued only by her bank - she can use it as a debit card and at the bank's ATMs, no other banks' machines (a royal pain, she says) but our debit card is issued by a mastercard company (has MC logo, DD does not), so can be used in any machines, not just our personal bank's. It is covered just like a credit card for theft and the money is deducted from our bank immediately. That's all I know about them, just our experiences... :)

Waterloo, IA(Zone 4b)

I recently bid on a cell phone. The seller hadn't picked up the paypal payment after 2 days. I started to think about it and went back to the ebay item. I hadn't checked the sellers feedback like I should of. He only had 4 and 2 were negitive. I went to my paypal account and canceled his payment. I was afraid he would leave me bad feedback at that time. He Emailed me and I explained why I canceled. He convinced me that he would not cheat me. I went back to paypal and reisued the money. I did recieve the phone. I do no that once the money is sent it's hard to get it back.
