I'm So Sad

Paris, TX(Zone 8a)

Folks, I've done a really stupid thing. Most of you already know that I'm still very new to gardening, so please don't be too hard on me. I forgot to bring my hanging plants in, and it got really cold overnight. I awoke to find this....

It's wandering jew. Is there anything I can do to for it? Will it come back next year? This happened to a chinese evergreen, and a swedish ivy, but my kangaroo fern was fine. All my other plants I had brought in the first time it was supposed to freeze overnight, and it never did. They were still in the house, but since I didn't really have room for the larger plants. I put them back outside. I didn't even think about how cold it was going to get, or even the fact that they were outside. (tears)

jdee I'm not new to gardening and every single year I forget to take something in. It's usually something very special to me too-go figure. Don't beat yourself up. ((hugs)) Try cutting it back and see if it will come back from the roots.

jdee, I would try the cutback. It looks like the pot was large enough that the roots should still be viable. Good luck.

Thanks I'll do that. Do I cut it all the way back to the soil in the pot?

Dont worry. It will grow back.. It did happened to me twice.. Now I have them all over on ground and in each pots. They die in winter and come back in spring time. YOu can cut them and bring them in. They will be ok.

I'd cut the top death off...within an inch or so to the soil. Take it in the house and water it.

I bet you will see new growth come from the roots.

You could also dig a hole and put the root system in it, pack it down, water it in and, if you like, lightly mulch it...ten-to-one it'll come back in the Spring! (If you're in a hurry though, bring the whole basket in the house where it's warm (minus the dead part you cut off) and keep in the light.

And don't feel bad...it happens. (I forgot to bring in our night-blooming cereus! ;>(

Well, I got my plants down, and ended up scalping them. The Kangaroo fern was still ok, but I brought it in, just in case.

One question....Can the kangaroo fern be planted into the ground?

This happened with my jasmin plant from Esther_z6 this year. I cut it back and I have new growth springing up. Yippee! I did not get to my brugs in time, however. There was so much going on inside the house that the outside got kinda neglected. The only reason the jasmine didn't fare the same as the brugs was it was next to the house and got all the radiated heat from afternoon sun-soaked brick. Still, it sure had a bad zap on its above-ground growth and I was sure it was a goner!

... * playin' taps * ...

.. Not really all that 'laugh' type of funny ... but, there's no doubt in my mind .. that the bigger majority of ALL of us .. have fallen (scuse me: 'taken' victims!) .. to the very same thing .. at least twice!! .. (a few will prolly only fess up to once, tho'!) .. hee hee ..

Hang in'ar .. and try not fret too much jdee ... God and 'momma nature' has a way of takin' care of such little 'whoopsies' that happen to us!! .. hee ..

(and we won't even talk about how many times I jes plum forget all about my ferns in the hangin' baskets!) grrrrrr ... Think I'm jes gonna quit doin' the basket and potted stuffs ..

Merry Christmas ... to your and yours !!
