Rerirement Home

Walkerton, VA(Zone 7a)

No, I'm not moving to a "retirement home". I wanted to show off the land we are in the process of buying upon which we plan to build a house and retire to when the time comes. It's 2.65 acres on one of the cleanest rivers in VA. It's on the list of endangered rivers, and land on it is very hard to find - we got lucky. Look at the extensive fresh water marsh. One of the more abundant plants in it is wild rice. Won't that be fun to harvest and eat? Wild life is also abundant: Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Deer, Canada Geese, myriad ducks. Fish include Rockfish (in season) White and Yellow Perch, Blue and Channel Cat, Shad, Largemouth Bass and various sunfish. We can't wait! Best of all, it is only 45 miles from Richmond, my hometown.

One lucky man, Mr. Bob! Brackish waters for the seasonal fish?

Walkerton, VA(Zone 7a)

No, Darius. Dead fresh. Lots of fish live in salt water but spawn in fresh.

Louisville, KY

Bob, What a wonderful setting to retire to! You will have many opportunities to observe the wildlife and fish your heart out.
Before coming back to Louisville, our house backed up to the Marshes of Glenn made famous by Sidney Lanier's poem; the marsh changes all the time; the variety of wildlife was great.

Lovely spot! Are you sure you will be allowed to build a house there?

Walkerton, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes indeed, Amaryllisgal. There are some houses there now occupied by some very nice people. They don't show up in the sattelite photo because it was taken in 1994 - way before any were built. Even now you wouldn't see much evidence of construction because minimal clearing has been done; and no piers are allowed in order to protect the marsh.

Bob...we have fished in the Mattaponi...beautiful area!! I lived in Richmond for 12 years...and Va. Beach for 13 years.

You'll certainly enjoy your "Golden Years" in that setting.

That's good to know, Bob. In my line of work we frequently see people who buy property with the intention of building on it, only to find that it's prohibited by regulation. It took a few years, but I think the realtors are getting a little smarter. Nowadays most of them try and make sure that the land is buildable before closing a sale - makes for fewer angry customers. LOL!

So, when do you start?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

way to go Bob! when do you plan on starting to build your dream home?
