Overwintering Eucalyptus in zone 5

Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 5a)

I need info on what conditions are most likely to keep my 10 foot tall Eucalyptus alive until next spring. I know absolutely nothing about them except it can't survive outside. I believe it is a sweetgum. If I have to take it to the basement I will have to do some layering to make it short enough. It was a deeply discounted plant at Franks which as you may know is going out of business. Jessamine

Well, you must first insure the area is clear of koalas as we all know what their diet consists of. From there, you would then most assuredly have to raise the rafters in the basement as a Sweetgum Eucalyptus will definitely need a little headroom and we can't expect them to thrive if they get squashed and compacted or trimmed heaven forbid. Now I am told that Eucalyptus plants get lonely. Good news for you is that a little bird said there is another Eucalyptus for sale at the Franks that is only 200 miles south of you. Sadly, they don't deliver. Now that you have your two Eucaplytus trees together, you will need to start creating some nice atmosphere for the two of them. I'm thinking a few tunes from the newly released "Land Down Under" music Cd would be ideal. Now for the Martha Stewart touch... hang a hamock between the two trees and edge it with some nice tassel fringe coordinated to the colors of your washer and dryer. Strategically place a serving tray with adult beverages. Add a few of those nice little umbrellas to your cocktails and place a pineapple in the middle for an added touch of the tropics. There, I'm thinking your Eucalyptus should do just fine!

I think this thing has added about six inches in the three weeks I've had it in the living room. I'm pretty sure there was a lot more space between the roof and the top of the tree before now. Since the top of the ceiling is 12 feet and the tree was 10 feet when I got it ...... Oh my gosh! It has been growing taller! It's at least a foot taller! I think I better start layering tomorrow. Awww, "this thing" loves the TLC it is getting from its new Mommy! !2' ceilings in living room??? Can't you leave "this thing" there? If it put on new growth, "this thing" could be decorated for the holidays! Why bother dragging out the Christmas Tree when you could just decorate "this thing"? Seriously, the only challenge I forsee is getting a star on the top but then again, you are creative!

If it keeps growing, you better start looking for a way to raise your roof!
