Ok, I want this SOOOOO bad and I know I am at the wrong place to try and get people to talk me out of it, but what the heck. :)
I can't stop thinking about it... I want to order it BAD. But it's $20 for ONE 3 inch pot and I just can't bring myself to pay that. I found it in a collection on Park's website that had a Razzamataz and one other unusual echinacea plant for $25 but it was sold out. I would have done that- even though it's still a little steep. But I don't know about $20 for a single plant. I keep going back and looking at it, thinking it will sell out really fast like it has done all Fall, but so far it hasn't. Hmmm... maybe that's a sign. Yes, that's it. God WANTS me to have it. See, I'm bad. So y'all start trying to talk me out of it now. Really... my credit card is jumping out of my purse at me! Good lord, I sound like someone calling their AA sponsor! LOL!

Orange Echinacea ("Meadowbrite")
I've been lusting after "meadowbrite" as well. Earlier this summer I was watching auctions on ebay and was very tempted to purchase this beauty. Will wait until spring/summer of 2005 and see if I can find one at a reasonable price... or trade for one on Dave's garden. :)
You mean thissss....

Ohhh - hurry up and buy it and send me some seeds!!! LOL
I am an echinacea fan myself - have a few and boy isn't this one pretty!!!
Speaking of have to havess.... Give me a sec and I will post a link to mine...
Nicole
Sorry, not trying to make things worse I promise!!!

Nicole
I kind of snubbed my nose at the 'Razzmatazz' Echinacea - it was a little too froufrou for my tastes. (JMHO - I know others like it!!!)
And I lived in BLISSFUL ignorance of this plant until the other day, when esw created the entry and submitted a picture. I saw it in the image queue and it was love at first sight. (I live in a very orange-tinted world here in Tennessee ;o)
I'm really hoping that Bluestone or someone offers it for a reasonable price next spring. But if they don't I could probably get DH to agree to pay a king's ransom for an orange plant, lolol.
Wonder if it would come true from seed?
Doubt it. Most of the hyped and hyper-priced hybrids don't :o(
Ok then - let's all go in together - buy one plant and Terry, you plant it in your yard. In 2 or 3 years you divide it and give us divisions! LOL
Nicole! Stop that! You added something else to my garden lust list! LOL!
Well here is my deal. I have mainly shade/part shade in my yard. I have one full sun area and I made it BRIGHT. I started out with hot pink zinnias and purple "salvia" (put that in quotes b/c that was on the tag, but I don't think its salvia). Then I added yellow yarrow and yellow "lemon drop" plants (don't have the botanical name with me right now). Then I put in the lime green sweet potato vine as filler. Later I added the bright orange coreopsis. This fall I added 6 climbing roses down the wrought iron fence and they are in shades of coral, yellow and orange. I also got that Caribbean Crush verbascum from Parks (LOVE THAT), orange/yellow/coral hollyhock and purple (shorter) hollyhock. The hollyhock is seeds that I need to start inside this winter. All that to say that anything yellow or orange that does well in full sun is a must have for me. I don't want anymore purple. Oh! I also planted two kinds of iris (Lady Friend and Orange Glaze I think they are called) that are in the same color scheme. I am obsessed with Echinacea too so that orange stuff is a must have. I was wondering if they would come true from seeds and figured probably not b/c it's a hybrid. Couldn't hurt to try it though. If I breakdown and buy it I will save seeds and send them out so we can all see if it works. Doesn't hurt to try.
We live in a historic district and I didn't think I could plant my parkway. I know we have rules stating that front yards cannot be any more than 50% garden (rest has to be lawn) and there are rules about what you can and cannot plant. Mainly you can't have cactus or palm trees. Anyway, we are on a corner lot so I have two very long parkway areas. My friend informed me that you CAN plant them but there is that 50% rule. All that is full sun so I am freaking out now at the possibilities!!!! Hmmm, maybe I should take out a loan and fill it all with Meadowbrite. Ha!
Jamie
Oh, I had not seen this one. I want it too! If any one has Razzmatazz please trade next Spring with me.
Gosh, Jamie that is really stinky about having rules on what you can have in your yard!
Blissful in the country
Teresa
Welll, I happen to have some White Swan Ech seeds I harvested from mine. Also DON'T worry about ole' Prairie SUn b/c I am going to buy a BIG pack when I place my order with Johnny's this winter. I already have a few folks I have promised some too so I will add you to the list! Can send the White Swan along with it.. I really like White Swan by the way - it's so upright!!
psssst!
oh ladies......
did someone say Razzamatazz and Art's Pride(Orange meadowbrite) ??
~~~~~~~~
have a Nike moment and "Just Do It" !
I love the cone flowers anyway, but when I read about the Orange one last fall then found out it was being released this year, I caved. Ordered a couple from Wayside and bought a couple more locally! The Orang'ish' color is pretty good. I'll appreciate them more next year when they're bigger. YES - I did let a couple set seed and have saved them
Razzamatazz - Oh Man! I only ordered 3 and gave one two to 2 closest garden friends. Until you've seen this one in person you just won't believe. Even more impressive is to watch that bloom start with a few petals and unfold and build and build into the multi-petaled mound. Gorgeous! and YES - I let two blooms set seed as well. Saved the seeds from one and sprinkled the others around. This is definitely a plant that will be allowed to self seed around the yard wherever it sees fit. Like the larkspur and bells of ireland.
I believe we could have a group trial to see if they come true. ???
I'll post a couple of pictures tonight
I was able to get a gallon size for $20 this past spring. Don't know that I'd have paid that for a 3" pot. There's supposed to be 2 or 3 new colors coming out in the spring! From what I've read they don't come true from seed, though. It's died down now, wonder if cuttings could be rooted?? Maybe I'll try in the spring.
Deb
I'm game!!! How do you want to work this out 8ft?
Nicole - is that that new rudbeckia? can't think of the name but with the orange tint around the inside, I've been this close || to ordering.
should I find addresses in my mail, I'll send a few seeds.
The pic I posted above is "Indian Summer" which isn't new but just one of my faves. I think Prairie Sun has been around for awhile too.. Not sure though - I am never up to date on newness.... Maybe someone else knows?
Don't order any of the Prarie Sun! I will add you to the list.. Can't promise when I will order - it will probably be in a month or so.. I haven't had time to sit down and pour over the catalog yet... Don't think any of us will be planting it anytime soon though!
Save some Indian Summer seeds for me, Nicole!
Gotcha down! Course you know that's the one I tried to give you some of when I was there!! HAHAHA! Not to mention I just mailed your filter off today and have the seeds in my office on top of that!! Could have stuck a pack in there!! Murphy's law!!
:-)
Has anyone actually tried starting these from seed? Of course rudbeckia f. colonizes like freely, but my "Autumn Sun" never has seedlings and I've not had any sprouts from seed I tried to start. ??? The only way it's gotten around the yard has been from dividing the clumps which do increase.
Yup. Always works that way... like I found woodspirit's shirt the day after I had mailed the cheese tray to her, LOL. Thanks for sending that to her, btw.
Well Indian Summer I grow every year as an annual from seed. It doesn't do well for me as a second year perennial - blooms then dies early. This is the first time I've collected my own seeds though, but I did a germ. test and they sprouted! I don't think ('think' is the key word) it is a hybrid so it should come true.
No prob. Darius! She sent me a TON of rose cuttings from a previous trade - cross your fingers I don't kill them all...
Of all the seeds just mentioned- yes please! If you are offering for trade or SASE I would love some!
I guess I'm not a true gardener b/c the horticulter side of it bores me, so I will just ask. If something doesn't come true from seed (hybrids), they still HAVE seeds, right? If so, what color will they likely be? I think it would be cool to save seeds and just see what comes up!
Teresa- it has it's ups and downs. Those rules are the same rules that keep people from having indoor furniture on their porch, broken down cars in the front yard, unmowed lawns, ill hung Christmas lights up year round and prevents one from painting a 1920s Craftsman house hot pink and teal! There is an offical list of plants and trees. Basically, it's anything that would have grown in Dallas naturally pre WWII. Weird huh? But they don't really give you a hard time unless you have a huge cactus garden or big ole palm trees. I felt bad for one couple who ripped out the entire front yard and put in a very nice garden. They weren't aware of the rules, which I think is the real estate agent's fault, but whatever. Anyway, they had to remove the garden to the point that it did not take over more than half the yard. But someone else can have a badly planned, unkept garden and you can't do anything about it because they are technically within the rules. One guy in the neighborhood association is a fanatic who is all about what would and would not have been here before 1935. So I told him he needs to keep his BMW in the garage b/c that would not have been parked in front of his house in that era. Oh, and suggested he get rid of his flat screen TV and dishwasher because those weren't around then either. He wasn't happy with me, but that's fine. I made my point. Ha!
Got you on the list!! Just be patient - I still haven't placed my order with Johnny's but I have all that have asked on one big list in my trade tracker so I don't forget!!!!
Oh I'm in no hurry. Won't be planting for a while yet anyway right? :)
Texsas that is true, I have seen a few horrible yards. Old junkers, weeds galore. Everything has its pros and cons.
God Bless Texas!!
specially since my sisters live in Plano & Grapevine and I'd ruther be in C.C.
I hear there's a pool going on when all my grass is gone. The few guys that actually do anything usually carp about how little grass I have. "Yeah - well it's better than anything on the street and allll season long". So even though my weed patch is regularly referred to as a jungle or botanical garden; it looks like I'm out wandering around pounding beer, chain smoking and enjoying the heck out of watering with a hose, I'm the only nut in the subdivision that's gotten the city 'Home of the Month' award. Twice
You don't think that rubs the ney-sayers raw. ;-)
I give up 8ft... what's C.C? :)
I personally have no problem with an "all garden no grass" landscape if that's what you like. As long as it's well maintained. And if you got home of the month then it can't look THAT bad! I bet "weed patch" doesn't accurately describe your garden. :)
What, you don't have a headache rack on your truck either? (heh,heh)
I thought Corpus Christi was referred to as C.C. statewide.
When I grow up, my dream job will be grounds maintenance/lancscaper for 'Taco Cabana' and 'Whattaburger' with all I can eat and drink!!
Hee hee!! I am working on ridding my yard of all the grass myself!! Course don't tell the hubby..... He's one of those grass lovers!!!
Well, I do have a big ole truck, but no headache rack. My boss got me a bumper sticker that says "silly boys, trucks are for girls!" but I told her my redneck gene isn't quite strong enough to compell me to actually put it on my truck. Ha! No, I have never heard Corpus Christi called C.C. I have just heard it shortened to simply "Corpus." GREAT dream job btw! :)
I'm not familiar with this Orange coneflower, but my local gardening buddies were recently discussing it. One had gone to North Haven Gardens and they were out, but did say they would be getting some in the Spring. It's in Dallas, so maybe you can get one there, as long as you leave us some! :) http://www.nhg.com/
