Citronella

NEW CUYAMA, CA

I wonder if anyone knows more about this plant than I do?
This is the first year I've sown these seeds someone passed onto me, the plants smell so wonderful...

I am unsure what to do with the plant or if it will go to seed and I could collect some seeds, any knowledgeable person's advice would be much appreciated........thanks.

eddiegirl, do you have the tender scented geranium (more technically Pelargonium) called 'Citronella' - http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/54668/index.html

or the "lemon grass" (Cymbopogon nardus) which produces the citronella oil - http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/62172/index.html

That wil determine what you can do with the plant and how/if to collect seeds ;o)

The plant looks like neither, it looks like a mint and smells like cintronella...I am not sure what kind it is, but when we get a real hard freeze I will surely know then!

Is it Monarda citriodora you are having in mind? I grew this from a trade a couple of years ago but it did not do all that well. It had that similar scent.

Dinu, I'm glad you picked up the conversational ball on this one, after I dropped it.

Hmmmm. If it looks like a mint, maybe Melissa officinalis? http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/292/index.html

If it's Monarda citriodora, you'll recognize it instantly - the flowers are very distinguishing: http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/301/index.html

Another strong lemon-scented plant is Aloysia triphylla: http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/279/index.html but it doesn't look anything like mint.
