Candain round up planning, part 2

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Oh Chrsitine, I am disappointed. "I know you're probably disappointed too, but I was so looking forward to talking "cats" with you until we made everyone puk! :(

Yeah, me too Donna. I was really looking forward to it. You have mail.

Wouldn't make me puk. But then I wouldn't be there either.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Christine, I'm disappointed you won't be able to make it! Donna, I'll talk cats with you ad nauseum if you want. Maybe we can get Christine to log on to DG from home, & give us a cat-report from Pickering :-)

For hotel rooms, I will definitely need one, and definitely as cheap as possible. I'm not averse to sleeping on the floor!! :-) Anyone willing to share?

Shannon

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Sounds good to me Shannon. You've got mail.

Thanks Shannon. That just might work!!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

OK, From the information that I have;

Donna, Shannon, Pam and her daughter, and Ingrid have arranged a place to stay.

I understand that Jeanne and probably Liz have also got plans of where they are staying. Heather, myself and Glenda already live here so that's taken care of.

That leaves jagonjune(Lynne), inanda (Ginny), Roselaine (Elaine), yumiko, Sunrise (Dawn), Kooger (Laura and her son) who need to plan there accomodations.

I've never been to one of these roundups. Is the plan to tour gardens, have plant trading time, of course social time, and do people want individual free time as well? Do you want me to make plans? I can put together a sample itinerary if you'd like.

Linda

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Oh Goody Candain Roundup Planning always gets me all agitters!

Hmm...I don't think I would need any individual free time, but that's just me. (I'll get mine when I'm sleeping, LOL) I think the plant trading, the odd tours and socializing is gonna take up a large part of 3 days. Gee, I feel bad that this is resting on your shoulders to have to plan, Linda. Is there anything I can do to help? It doesn't seem fair that you do all this work just cause you live there. (Albeit, the banana belt of Canada, we don't hold that against you, LOL)

Donna

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I was just thinking that - it seems that, even if it wasn't the original intent, some of the organizing has fallen to Linda because she's graciously stepped up to look at some of these things.

As far as the agenda, we probably all just need to get our ideas out there. I'm presuming the evening of the 1st will be just for arriving & getting together for coffee & chat, then the next 3 days for touring & trading, then the morning of the 5th for saying good-bye :-(. For the 2nd, 3rd & 4th, how about 1 garden per day, and the rest of the time for trading & browsing through the neighbourhoods? Or should we squeeze in 2 garden tours a day? I've never been to a RU...I"m sure the time will fly all too quickly.

Will we have enough vehicles to get ourselves around? Should we be looking at sharing a rental, for local transport?

I'll be coming down Friday and will have to leave Sunday. I would think Saturday would be a good day to organize the plant trading, maybe a dinner together and I can give a slide show if people want it. Just my ideas.

Butchart Gardens will take a good portion of the day for people to see.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Jeanne, a slide show sounds wonderful. :)

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Hi all RUers,

There is a little cottage we can rent for $150 per day. Sleeps 6. It is just off Dallas. This would give us a kitchen TV and all that. Lots of parking. One building from the ocean with a beach right there too. Not far from downtown, in James Bay. Cottage belongs to a motel. If there are not enough of us to take the cottage I'll check on cost of rooms in the main building, which have 2 double beds, and a kitchenette. No elevator.

Trouble with the friends and relative hotel rooms, is that both the hotels where we could do this, will only give us confirmed rooms the day before. This is too dicey I think. The one hotel- Coast hotel - looked up the first week of april for the past 3 years and they were full .... so I really think we cannot rely on that.

It looks as though so many people have found places to stay that this cottage probably isn't really viable either. Stay tuned for more ideas.

Ginny

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

pc being stupid - will try post later.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

OK I have now booked at the Executive House on Douglas Street

It is a one bedroom suite which could accommodate 4 of us I think. Certainly room for more than me. Has a full kitchen.

Anyone who is still looking and wants to share let me know. I booked for 3 nights (1,2,3 of April) cost for two adults is $425.70 including taxes. Haven't asked what each additional adult would be but can ask. So if anyone wants to share the most it would be would be half if there are two of us ($212). Email if you want to.

Have also booked my flight (cheaper by far than driving) and a car. Car would hold five comfortably. So let me know if you would like airport transfer as well.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Lynne, with your car, our van and Jeanne's van, there should be enough vehicles.

For those of you coming by ferry from Vancouver, if you want to be picked up on this side, let me know and that can be arranged. That should save $90 for a vehicle on the ferry.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Gee, this sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. Ever since I joined on here I've been thinking about whether or not I would be able to come too. I don't really know anybody though...not like all of you who have been emailing each other for quite awhile I guess. After all, it hasn't even been a week yet for me on here. My main problem though, is that I'm a substitute teacher and the last couple of years I haven't been getting very much work, so I'm not sure if I can afford to come. I was thinking that I could wait and see how it goes the next few months and maybe join in closer to the date. However, it looks like you're pretty much getting all the arrangements done now so I guess that's not really a possibility. Or is it?

Sandy

Bryson, QC(Zone 4a)

nightowl2
Sandy, I'am just like yourself-I really don't know anyone to say either..So, it will be like a major blind date...LOL
For the arrangement I'am sure someone here will make it come together if you are able to come..
It should be alot of fun!
Best Regards, Ingrid

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Major blind date. I love it.!!! We can always find room for one or two more, if anyone wants to join us between now and April, so don't worry about a bed Sandy.

s far as vehicles go, I have a VW bus in Victoria so am sure there will be enough room for us - and our many purchases/swops.

Ginny

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Forgot to say, bring your bathing suits. Hot tub calls.
Ginny

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Sandy, you have to come! (funds permitting of course...) I'm a newbie too - that feeling doesn't last long here. It'll take about two minutes in person for all of us to feel like old friends.

I totally understand about the money thing. This is just the first of many Canadian RUs, I suspect, and the majority of subscribers aren't going at any rate - it's just for fun. Even if it just becomes possible the day before, don't hesitate to drive down. :-)

Shannon

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

All the girls are right, Sandy. Most of us don't know anyone else, and many of us have joined DG in just the last few months. By the time April rolls around, (4 months and 4 days, but hey, who's counting!) you'll know everyone as well as anyone else. (Did that make sense? Sounds funny.) But you know what I mean. So keep those 4 days or so open, OK?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Makes sense to me, Donna...lol! See what a group you've joined, Sandy? hee hee

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Finally on the pc again. Stupid keyboard freezes up and I can read everything but not type. Gonna have to do something about that sometime..... The DS listed up above with me would be my sister in Surrey, not son. :) Yeah, like they'd come? for plants? no way!! Depending on how much visiting my sis wants to do, I may only attend the Butchart day. She knows how badly I want to go there. And the first night, love to meet everybody!!! The rest would kinda depend on my sister, what she wants to show us of her fair city. :)

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

OK, here's what Ginny and I have cooked up between us so far. PLEASE give us input. We'd like to kow if anyone wants free time on Sunday morning to go to church. Jeanne, what time are you planning to leave on Sunday, should we have our Butchards time when you are in town? There's so much to see, and seemingly so little time. There's also the museum to see, quite a good one if I do say so myself. The harbour ferries do a water ballet on sunday morning. There's lots of nurseries to visit.

I'm assuming the highlights for gardens, in priority are: 1) Butchart's 2) Gov't house 3) Abkhazi 4) Victoria garden tours.

Butchart's will take the better part of at least half a day, probably more. When I know when we are going, and firm numbers, I'll make a reservation for high tea lunch in the old Butchart mansion. They also have a great gift shop.

It doesn't look like the schedule copied and pasted very well. let me try something different.

LOL, no message, just wanted to be the 500th person to view this thread. Bored... yeah maybe.

Linda

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL.....We are keeping an eye on it Linda.....lookin' good!! Once we know our arrival and departure times we can add something to this! :D

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

You have mail, Linda.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

So, we should be planning on arriving the evening of Mar. 31?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Lordy, I hope not. I don't land until 5:55 pm on April 1st.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

You guys just get here when ever you get here. We'll all work around eveyone's plans. This is for fun, education and relaxation. No stress is needed or wanted. At least that's my view.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Okey-doke. It looked like we were starting at 9:00 Friday morning - the schedule just threw me for a loop for a sec there, but I'm ok now :-).

Thanks for drafting it Linda, it gives us a good idea of how much we can try to squeeze in.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Linda asked me if I knew how many sleeps it was until the RU. Thought I didn't know, didn't ya... ahem...are your ready?... 126 sleeps!! Hah, I counted. Do Da, Do Da!! I have to get my rear out of this chair and away from this computer before I get any punchier than I am now, Geesh!!

Linda, I'm pretty flexible about when I'm leaving on Sunday. Probably sometime in the afternoon so I can drive the Malahat in the light. I'll be arriving mid afternoon on Friday.

Bryson, QC(Zone 4a)

Linda, how far is the airport from your home?
Thanks, Ingrid

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I'm about 20-25 min away. it's not far, and a nice drive. Let me know when you have an arrival time, an I'll be out there to pick you up, or arrange something.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Now we just need to know who is going to church on Sunday AM.
Then we can plan Sunday.

Arrival time, flight number and airline if coming by air would be good too. Just so that Linda isn't running back & forth to Airport all day .

Donna - 5.55 Friday AL?
Ginny - 8.37 am Westjet. I have to go retrieve VW, get it serviced etc

Ginny.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Okay, thanks you guys. I'll definitely try to come, even if it's just for a couple of days. It seems a shame not to be able to join in when it's so close to home. You've all already made me feel so welcome that by the time another, (what is it?) 126 days passes, I'll feel like I've been here forever.

Sandy

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Now that's the spirit Sandy! And you are right, by then you'll feel like you've been here forever. And we could have a bunch of new members by then too: who knows!

Now Ginny, you were asking a question, but what exactly is AL. I'm not coming with AL, so what else am I missing, Duh? My flight does arrive at 5:55 pm at Victoria (YYJ) if I may be so technical, ahem..

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I think she wanted to know which Air Line (AL)

Westjet is the carrier Donna's coming on.

Who's AL Donna, and does DH kknow about him? LOL

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Whew... had me goin there. DH would have been concerned, I'm sure.
