Hi Maxine,
Actually I had a few extras that I was offering to give away, and I thought you might like some. I didn't hear back from you so now I have already given them all away :-(
Oh yes, I am a big customer of B&D...I love their bulbs. I got an e-mail about the Private Harvest trumpet bulbs you're talking about. I had to exercise some self discipline and realize that if i am giving bulbs away because I have nowhere to put them, I really shouldn't be buying more :-) I'm sure that won't last, though, and I went out at bought some large clay and terracotta containers and have been planting in them, as well. I knew with you being in WI you wouldn't be able to plant much longer unless you started using containers, or planted in springtime.
I have gotten Silk Roads from two sources - lilygarden.com, which is the website of the Orienpet hyhbridizer Judith Freeman, and she developed the Silk Road lily, among many others. Also, I have ordered most of them from Park's/Wayside Gardens. I usually like to buy bulbs from dedicated and specialized growers, but I think many of the lilies Wayside offers come directly from Lilygarden, since they reference Judith freeman, offer many of the same varieties, and the bulb size and packaging was indistinguishable.
B&D is my favorite lily site overall, however, because they just have the biggest, fattest, healthiest looking bulbs, and the ones I planted last fall did fantastically well this past spring. Actually, those lily bulbs I got from Old House Gardens this fall were right up there, as well...we'll see how they do.
Thanks for the note and happy Thanksgiving to you!!
Steve
Which Lily are you eagerly awaiting bloom of next year?
So sorry to have missed out on receiving the Silk Road. Perhaps in the future we can exchange bulbs.
I ordered a lot of bulbs this fall, and am anxiously awaiting blooms this summer.
Do you have the Tropical Isle Trumpet? It is gorgeous and true to color. Hope it makes babies for me.
I didn't put a trace on this web site, so boo, hoo. Now I can do without.
Maxine
Maxine,
I ordered a lot as you did, so we'll both have to post pictures when our work comes to fruition :-) Yes, as a matter of fact I ordered 3 Tropical Rain and 3 Tropical Isle this year. They had a crop failure on the Tropical Rain (sniff), so they sent me 6 Tropical Isle bulbs, and 3 others of a different variety (B&D is very generous on substitutions....and they do a great job on "guessing" what would be a good alternative!). Now that you have said how great Tropical Isle is, I am very eager to see how it looks in the spring!! I am sure it will make babies...lilies are as excellent at naturalizing as daffodils.
I think my favorite view is the lion butt out the front door> (snicker)
Taz, I bet your yard stops traffic in all the other seasons!
YOU like buts dontcha?
was a good shot of him .When we bought house ,theirs was a
old man living next door in is ninety's . We moved lion a few days before we moved in ,because it took about 4 people to lift it .
so when we got settled in he came over ,and told us he kept looking out window at our faithfully dog standing guard over house and later in day he got pan of water for the dog and brought it over and up close he saw it was a statue of lion.
when i put the pond in we asked him if he liked it ? he said yes
the sound of running water was nice ,but could we move it about 2 feet so he could see it from his rocking chair LOL
It never dawn's on him to move his chair .
Oh shoot! Forgot to address the above message to Steve.
Forgive me people. Looks like it will be a confusing day for me due to the fibro FOG!!!!
Any way Steve, enjoy the picture.
Maxine
I don't see Tropical Isle listed under B&D's new Spring 2005 listing. :-(
Thanks Maxine, that is beautiful. I love to color combination. I agree about the lily bulbs. I definitely think they offer you the most bang for yur buck, as well. What times of year do different lily bulbs bloom for you? My first Oriental bloomed in late April, and the last one finished in late July, though most were finished by early July. Trumpets for me were blooming in May and June.
Asiatics bloom in June thru to July [first week]
Orientals bloom July, Aug. and Sept.
Orienpets bloom mostly late July
Trumpets bloom mostly late July thru Aug., sometimes into Sept. depending on species.
Will keep better track of blooms.
Oh yes, Sugar Babies [yellow] bloom in May with Iris and others.
Brenda, look on Page 29 of B & D's catalog I am looking at spring of 2004
Maxine
How about going to
http://ask.com Put in Tropical Isle. That will take you to B&D to pre order for spring 2005.
Remember that catalogues get printed months in advance. I fairly often go hunting for things and then go to the supplier to see if they have just one or two to spare.!!!
It worked this year with Ripe Banana which I lost to (I think a rat) in Victoria. Finally got hold of one this year and have scaled it well to be sure I don't lose it ever again.
Ginny
Edited to change space to spare.!!

I've grown tigers & a few Asiatics over the years, but am new to the dwarfs & pixies. Do they bloom earlier than the others?
