Hi Hope! You are certainly welcome here anytime!!
Terrie

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

P'ville I know what you mean about the maps! We live close to the bay, we don't get as cold as Brownsville in winter, nor as hot in summer. Maps with more detail have our area in 10a but some stick the whole area in 9b. There are little micro climates all over the place down here, but I'd say the wind and salt are more of a problem than the temps!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

thanks Terri.. i like Texas lots...

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

hope.....no of course you don't have to be from Texas to be here. Everyone is welcome. It is merely a convenient way to discuss things of interest and relevance to people in Texas, not a by invitation only club. And yes, the cricket invasion in Pflugerville a couple of years back was like something out of a science fiction movie LOL

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

A '56 Bel Aire baby blue convertible is a part of my favorite summer. And it took me years to get over wanting one of my own. ROFL Also have fond memories of a ghia...more lol

Sorry, not really relevant - just liked the fun. We get to as high as 115* in the summer /105-110 for days on end/ and in the deep of winter our lows are below freezing with sometimes jolting jumps in daytime temps... no snow for ground cover so there's a lot of freeze thaw for plants to endure. Some of my problems are like yours. 4300ft, high desert, sandy soil to garden in. blow sand actually, lot like face powder.

I forget our average rainfall but it has no bearing cause my valley is in the throes of long term drought. The state over all is calling it 7yrs, I count 10 in Moab Valley. I'll be lurking here now and then. OK?

LOL Blooms.....don't think I'm gonna ask for the details of some of those memories. Our 56 is two tone sierra gold and adobe beige....4 door sedan.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Best engine they ever made. anybody. We put almot 200,000 miles on our sta wag and then sold it to a guy who put the engine in his truck. LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 7b)

You know that most of my plants don't read the memo's on what they are supposed to do anyway... My Esparanzas come back every year... a stupid Begonia always comes back, pond plants grow in clay soil, tomatoes grow when ignored... just depends. Good reference, those zones are, but I don't rely on them!

mel

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Blooms! Glad to see you over here. I'm sure we share a lot of the same kind of weather but we do get rains that will rot plants faster than you can spit!
Okay, Mel. I have to go look up Esparanzas now.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

The esperanzas usually sold around here for cheap every summer(Gold Star Esperanza hybrid ) are supposed to be hardy to 9a, but there are some species Esperanzas that are hardy to 7b/8a that I want. You might have one of the species Mel. Check out this Orange one. http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/60979/index.html
YUM!!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay, I didn't even know that's what they were called. I had one the first summer I started gardening but didn't realize it wouldn't come back. I never replaced it because I sorta got away from yellows.

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

trunnels post reminded me of a problem that I have that has always been a thorn in my side. I am just terrible with names.....that goes for people, places, and plants. I can probably ID hundreds of plants visually but couldn't tell ya the name of them (scientific or common) for the life of me. It's not just that I haven't come across the names, I can repeat it to myself a hundred times and still not be able to think of it 10 minutes later. I think it's because so many plant names ( and for that matter, people and place names too) are arbitrary (at least to me) and don't provide any logical association I can use to remember them by. Any body else have this problem and what tricks or techniques do you use to overcome it?

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I do in the worst way but If you come across with antidote let me know...

(Zone 8b)

Hey I even get the kids names muddled up - the plants have no chance!! Think its hereditary- I had so many names as a kid myself I reckon my folks couldn't remember mine either!! LOL

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

well a lotta help you are whosits and whatsits! LOL

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

don't forget whatchamacallits and thingys or little yellow elf cap plant

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

I am not a native Texan. We visited here when I was a kid, and finally moved here in 1982. So I guess 22 years = naturalized Texan. For many years, I did not volunteer that I was born in Calif., and even when people asked where I was born (not a strong enough accent, I reckon), I simply said it didn't matter, because I was here now. :)

I live on 11 acres in the Panhandle. Near Lake Meredith. In the middle of nowhere. Pretty much how I like it. Still, Walmart is only 17 minutes away, and most of my friends live either within a mile, within 20 miles, or within 50 miles(Amarillo). My hands stay pretty full with two kids and a few pets. But one day I will have a formal garden and post pictures. Right now I am bagging leaves and hauling manure.

Has anyone noticed that around here, shortly after the leaves fall, they all blow away to Kansas? Makes for a short raking season LOL.

I am very excited we have a special forum for Texas Gardens. They will probably be the widest range of gardens, considering the array of terrain, and so many hardiness zones. I bet this becomes one of the busiest forums, because everyone else is going to read it too.

Good job bringing new people to DG, sweezel! Welcome PvillePlanter, koncreteblonde, and anyone I missed. Hello to eyes, blooms, John, cherishlife, dave, jo, melva, gumlla. And nice to meet you too Texasgarden, TXMel, okus, nadi, trunnels, paulwhwest, witch, Vickie, Elva, VSWillliams, Moodene, Calalily, Hope43, and everyone else who likes to think of TEXAS as HOME.

What a fine bunch of folks.......

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

na ah....those leaves don't blow to Kansas.....they land in my yard. And I appreciate all the free mulch.

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Jaime - I was reared in Midland, too.

Eyes,TxMel, Paige - Your gardens are beautiful.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Pville, I raked up sixteen 33 gallon bags out of a street (residential) Sat morning! I am going back for more tomorrow. Sure wish it would blow into my yard! I am also knocking on doors/ plan to leave slips, about hauling off peoples hay/straw bales when they are finished with their decor. One couple said I could have the leaves out of their pumpkin lawn bags-- WOOHOO -- so I will be on the lookout for those tomorrow.
Where on earth is pflugerville???

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

There ya go Tamara....you are gonna be up to your eyeballs in mulch....but you can never have enough mulch :-) Interesting how they end up in my yard though. I live on the second house from the corner of a pretty long block. Our breezes mostly run from SW to NE. On the east side of my house (the side closest to the corner) there is a solid hedge of photinia running down the property line from the house to the street. On the west side there is not barrier. So all the leaves blow up the block but can't get past the hedge in my yard. Prettiy neat huh? Pville is just on the north side of Austin. Where the heck is Fritch?

Port Neches, TX(Zone 9a)

Glad to see this forum. In my 76 years, I have lived in Nederland, Dallas, Arlington, Joshua, Montgomery, and now am in Pt. Neches. There is so much diversity in this state, and I love every bit of it.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Pville, ever heard of Lake Meredith, walleye capital of the world? Well, there is Fritch! We are NE of Amarillo, about 40 minutes. The blue norther came in right on time, so I won't be going out today for leaves hay or anything, just to get the mail. Speaking of mulch, as soon as I get someone with a tractor loader to help, a guy who raises meat goats has manure a foot deep in his pens, and guess where it is heading??? I just love gardening, and I LOVE TEXAS!

Thanks Dave!

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

ah....I see Tamara....you are one of those yankee Texans...LOLOL......j/k

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

midsgarden my daughter lives in nederland now but works in Beaumont and my son lived in port neches for several years but moved outside Houston to be closer to work, I think the drive got to him...I love all parts of the state...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

pville, good thing you said j/k, that is treading on dangerous ground, walking that thin line. I have never met a yankee I didn't like, I have never met a yankee. LOL Have had good seeds trades with some though.
I actually went to Austin once for a David Cooper seminar. What little I saw was beautiful. I stayed at a friends in a small town NE, but don't remember the name. It was so small, I don't think there was even a gas station. That was many years ago. More recently, a friend from Amarillo moved down there to pursue the arts. Haven't heard, so I guess he ain't comin' back so to speak... Must be a great place, except for all the floods. It is snowing here now, could get 6 inches in some areas, nope, not joking, IT IS SNOWING HERE FOLKS. My kids thought it would be Christmas before it snowed, so now they are hoping Christmas comes sooner than I say HAHA. I brought in 30 or so pounds of pole beans this week, and nearly a dozen cucumbers. Still need to bring in the indian corn, but it should survive the 20 degree farenheit temps with a sub zero wind chill. Would you believe I have balnkets over one ten foot row of pole beans, they were still blooming and covered in baby peas. If they can make it through this spell, I will have green beans for three more weeks!!!
DON'T CHA JUST LOVE TEXAS?!

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

See....I was right....if you have snow in November you MUST be a yankee (ducking :-)

Let's see small town, NE of Austin, serveral years ago no gas station. That sounds like it could have been Hutto or Granger. I do love this area and the flooding is frequent but not severe. We just have so much limestone in the soil that it doesn't absorb very well and when we get rain it is usually a lot in a short period of time so we get some temporary flooding in lower lying areas. I don't actually live within Pflugerville city limits but it is my mailing address. I'm actually in the very northen tip of Travis County, just a mile or so from Austin city limits and a mile or so in the other direction from Williamson County. Let's see, at the moment in Pville it is 64 degrees :-)

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

TamaraFaye, you need to post your snow event in the weather forum!!! Start a new thread their about the first snow of winter or somethin' like that thar.

John

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

People will not believe her... Texas getting snow before most places in the north! LOL I will be watching the weather forum for that post. :)

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Me too!!!

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

well ya know how those panhandle yankees exagerate (she is gonna kill me for all my ribbing her about being a yankee LOL)

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Hey, I am too! (a yankee, not a killer)!

Pflugerville, TX(Zone 8b)

LOLOL.....not sure which is worse LOL

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Actually a westerner probably isn't technically a yankee. But, b/c I talk funny am often accused of being one.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

AS I mentioned before, I have never traveled into yankee territory, so BACK OFF {grin}
Weather forum, huh, I may never get off this computer.

Belive it or not, the main highway was closed. We are just getting a few inches, Amarillo is expected to get 6-8 inches before it is all over, and this is WET snow. The plants would love it if it werren't for the freezing temps and wind chill.

Last night, the entire Panhandle(s) (OK & TX) were under 1 of three warnings: Winter Weather, Winter Storm, and Blowing Snow.

Yes, blowing snow advisory, try seeing to drive in it, worse than blowing rain or sleet, because all you see is white. All I did was cross the highway from the grocery store, and an Atmos Energy truck almost hit me becasue he didn't have any lights on (not even a turn signal) and I COULD NOT SEE HIM. I called and reported him. He followed me for two turns, still no lights or turn signals. The postman was driving without lights too, SOME PEOPLE, huff, huff.

My kids are loving to watch it out the window. They have been praying for snow for Christmas. The last time my six year old prayed for snow, he was two, and we lived in Amarilllo. For Christmas in 2000, we got a record three feet of snow in three days. Maybe it was only two feet, NO I DON'T EXAGGERATE, my memory just ain't what it used to be. (someone could look it up I bet)

SO JUST FOR PURE ENTERTAINMENT, I WILL COPY THIS POST TO THE WEATHER FORUM. SOMEONE MAYBE WILL ADD THE LINKS TO THE WEATHER CHANNEL OR SOMETHING. I NEED TO GET OFF THIS COMPUTER AND STOKE UP THE WOODSTOVE.

It's snowing, it's snowing, the old man is raving!

I came up with that while I was out feeding the dog. Say it to the tune of the raining rhyme. And tell horseshoe, he loves a good poem LOL

Regards, Tamara

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

My friend in Midland said they had sleet and "snow like" parcipitation today but nothing is sticking. She said she and her mom (another gardener) were lamenting the weather. Her Mexican sage which was gorgeous yesterday is now laying flat. :( She says they are paying for the mild summer and all the rain they got this year. Ha!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

as per your request, WAYTOO, here is the link to the snow in texas thread in the weather forum, I am off to put wood in the stove
