It is my own experience, maximum plant lovers are from TX in the world. I did trade with a lot people who live in TX. So it nice , people of TX have their own forum, but please TX people dont forget us. We are also with you ......
The Texas Gardener forum!!
konkrete... so glad you're here! Ya'll welcome her! We will have a blast!
Welcome, Paige! If you are into butterflies and hummers you are gonna like it here. Check out the butterflies and hummers forum for proof of that. Nice lookin garden!
Welcome Mel & Koncreteblond! I recognize your name from GW Koncreteblond - I am fsadallas when I actually post over there, though that is rare these days.
What beautiful gardens you two have! Wow! We love to see pictures of gardens here at DG. You both should check out the perennial and general gardening forums. We all love it when people share pictures of their gardens there. I hope to see more soon. :)
Koncrete....I remember you from GW too.....hi ya and welcome!
My goodness............I look the other way for a second, and looky what happens!! Just a half acre lot in a one horse town up by the Red River for me, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love the simple life. Texas is like a whole other world in itself...........and I know y'all know what I'm talkin' about!
"eyes"
shuresnuf eyes....know exactly......I rekon....jeet yet? lol.....welcome. Is that a magnolia in the background?
Thanks y'all! It's so nice to be welcomed! I'm so glad to get back to chatting with fellow gardeners. TXMel has said there were a ton of forums, but she didn't exactly explain that it's going to take me all winter to check it all out! Fun! I have visited the Butterfly forum already. My camera is going to be so happy to be put to use again.
naw konkrete....I've only been here a few days and it doesn't take that long....but then again I've spent way too much time doing it....LOL.....it's all sweezel's fault....but she did warn me....LOL
Yes maam I did. :) Of course you probably did not take me quite seriously enough though. :) I would have invited more people from GW over here as the whole Jesus shebang went down, but Dave's Garden is a dirty word to Spike.
Eyes, how mady caladiums did you actually plant this year?? It looks like you had plenty left over to fill up those beds after hosting the co-op.
Golly gosh! This forum got busy quickly - it'll take for ever to keep up if it goes on at this rate. LOL
A quick question, how many of you are native born Texans? At least half the folk I meet are like me from somewhere else but came on a visit and never left!!!
We have been visiting the family in the USA for years from the UK, mainly Texas till the son moved north. Last year son was moved back to Texas from Seattle and lent us a car to drive down by way of a long vacation. We drove down the west coast and meandered across, took in 9 states, crossed into Texas in the Panhandle. Well we were only half a mile over the border when we stopped to eat, walked in and were greeted with 'Hi folks! How Y'all Doin?', looked at each other and said - were home! Even though we lived 8,000 miles away really.
So this year, when he said "would you like me to sponsor you for a GC", there was no decision to make.
How did other strays get here?
That's great okus.....I'm a transplant too....but as we say....I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could! My DH is a native......met him about 10 years ago and married him about 8 years ago...I was living in Virginia at the time. In fact he and another Texan friend ribbed me unmercifully about needing a GC cause Texas is a whole nudder country. Welcome to Texas.........YeeeeeeHaaaaaaawwwwwww!
I am a transplant from the east coast...New Jersey, mostly. The thing I love most about Texas is just about everything is hardy here...don't have to dig up stuff and care for it indoors. WHich is great b/c I have 3 young kids. And 2 cats.
Me too Witch....I lived in northern Virginia mostly but also DE, PA, and NY. And I've got 3 cats, 4 kids....but the kids are grown....well supposedly anyway lol
Hi...I go through Texas so many times each year that I think I am a Texan too....maybe I should buy a little place near Kerrville so I'd have a place to hang my hat.
Congratulations on your new forum!
Jo
I'm a transplant, too. By way of California then, Alaska and on to North Texas. Been here since 1994. Its taking a while to adjust but, I'm getting there.
Boy, this is a long thread now! Mel, I am blown over by your gardens! Can I come play in them with you?
Welcome, Paige! Your garden is so lovely and inviting -- bet the butterflies and hummers just love visiting you!
I was born and raised in Texas. I spent most of my growing up years in a place called Sunnyvale, just outside of Mesquite. For those of you who know Sunnyvale now, it is not the same place as it was back then. Most of us lived out there in the country because it was what we could afford. Our little school usually had less than 200 kids 1st thru 8th grade. No high school -- we had to be bussed. We raised our own chickens, pigs and cows and always had a huge veggie garden. Now, there are no gardens or animals, just mansions and swimming pools.

This thread is getting awfully long....now that dave has it on the forums list we can get to it from favorites on the forums so anybody feel free to start a new thread instead of tagging on this one.
Sweez...............planted them all across the front beds, around the trees and birdbath, down the driveway, in a window box, and as a border around my canna bed.........I actually had to get a few more from Buddy's!! They were the hit of the neighborhood, now they're looking pretty sad. I'd say I planted well over 200, now to dig them up......I love my perennials too, and one large bed is designated for them. Yes Pflug, that's a Magnolia. I was born in St. Louis, lived in CA and AZ 7 years, and the rest of my life has been in the Lone Star State. In case y'all didn't know.........once ya been here over 7 years, you're an ADOPTED TEXAN!!
Well, I am like Terrie - born in Dallas and raised in a suburb of Dallas, in Garland, also next to Mesquite so not too far from where Terrie was raised.
Well, I have actually lived outside of the Dallas area - for about sixth months when I was 5 years old. My mom wanted something different so she drug my little brother and I out to Sante Fe for that time since a friend lived there. The jobs were not plentiful enough though so we came back home.
I was born in Hobbs, NM but it's 4 miles from the Texas state line. In fact, many people in Hobbs will drive to Seminole to have their babies so that they are born in Texas! My parents are both Okies so they weren't going to do all that. :) I like to say I wasn't born IN Texas, but it was close enough. We moved to Midland (TX) when I was in 7th grade. I moved to Arlington to go to UTA in 1996, got married in 1999 and moved to Augusta, GA for 2 years. As soon as DH was out of the Army, we moved back to Texas (Dallas). You know what they say, you can take the girl out of Texas but you can't take Texas out of the girl! I had us packed and moving the weekend after he was out of the Army. Ha! There is my borning life story!
aw geeeze eyes.....whatcha talkin bout? I was a dyed in the burnt orange texan after just 6 months!
I was born in TX but moved away when I was young but came back on vacation or "passing thru" almost every year since. We moved back in Jan this year, we live near South Padre Island. I wanted to live on the Island till I saw the list of restrictions, lol.
It is like gardening on a foreign planet down here!
Seems to me us adopted Texans are in the majority, doesn't take long to naturalise does it! There seems to be something about the place... maybe its the locals bein so downright friendly an all thet keeps us here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My son has a US passport, but he says he's not an American really, he's a Texan, and he was born in Wales (UK).
Since everyone else is giving their Texas history, I'll do the same. :) I was born in Wisconsin but lived in Richardson from 2 until almost 8yo, then back to Richardson and McKinney for 2 years as an adult, and now happily I'm back again, this time to stay. :)
dave
LOL.....I like his attitude okus!...and btw....I read your posts to my DH, who is a native Texan......and he said to tell you that you are really starting to "hack it" LOL
Not a native, but I've been here for 20 years now. All but two years of our married life. We are from northern Okla. I like the heat better than the cold! We have adapted to gardening here... I grew up on a small farm, and thought of gardening as chores... now it is my pleasure and playground! (EXCEPT mowing!)
trunnels- thank you. I have admired pix from your yard in the past! You have shade, if I remember... we have a friend gathering ideas for her shade garden. I was describing yours to her!
mel
Mel,
I'm just learning about new plants for the shade myself. Maybe we can start a "shade plants in Texas" thread.
I notice you are in zone 7. Is your temperature much different from those of us around Dallas?
And BTW, Oklahoma is almost Texas!
That's right! I've noticed a lot of Okie's are down there or Texan's in Oklahoma. I feel at home either place.
Terrie, start one! I have quite a bit of shade and need help with that.
Terrie- hope I didn't step on your toes but I started a shade garden thread! I'd love to see these pictures everyone is talking about! :)
Jamie
Well, my zone is actually probably zone 8b... you know, they changed it recently... and with my extreme sunny sight... everything suffers. I do need to fix that.
well, it's late... can't think... off to bed.
Actually, I think you and Terrie are both 8a. It's kinda hard to tell for sure but looking at the map, if you split Zone 8 down the middle http://davesgarden.com/zone/ , it looks like 8a is from about the Texas, Oklahoma border to Waco and 8b is Waco to San Antonio/College Station.
And then, there is this map!

ed. to add yet another map and add to my confusion!

Those two are the old maps. The AHS had released a draft of a new map in 2003 and that is what Dave has on this website. But look at this http://www.ahs.org/publications/usda_hardiness_zone_map.htm It looks like they have retracted the draft to do some tweaking. Hmmmm....
Am I the only one that thinks way too much emphasis is placed on hardiness zone mapes? Who ever's and whenever, it is still nothing more than the average low temp in winter. Its nice as a general point of reference but to me it doesn't provide a lot of gardening help other than a general idea of what plants I might need to protect in winter. Things like soil composition, prevailing winds, precipitation, polution, altitude, ecological considerations, and yes, even the dreaded HOA restrictions have way more baring on day to day gardening in a given locale than a single statistic (and a averaged one at that) of temperature extreme during one season of the year.
Hmmmmm, indeed!! I wish these guys would get their act together. Glad you opened this (tuna can sized) canna worms.
