The Texas Gardener forum!!
Yes!!!!
Wow!....thanks Dave. You just are so fast and easy.....you are spoiling us rotten!
Yay, Dave!
sweezel,
Where was that photo taken? It is gorgeous!
Where & when was that pic taken, Staci? It is beautiful!
Melva, I found that on a website of pictures last fall so I am not sure. I tried to find it again, before posting it but had no luck. It is supposed to be of an area around Medina in the Hill Country.
Scratch that... I found it. It was on Webshots. Check out the other beautiful pictures this person took.

sweezel, I'd say that picture was doctored, unfortunately. :( I live about 15 miles north of Medina and I can say that the trees don't look like that. Liveoaks don't turn red - they are evergreen. :)
dave
Hmm...Not doctored, just not Medina, but further west than that. :) http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/lostmap/ That'd be worth a visit.
You have not been to Lost Maples yet? You really should take Trish and make a day trip out of it in a few weeks. It is something that can't be missed. As you are coming out of Medina on 337 and into Vanderpool, close to Lost Maples, there are quite a few of the maples and more red oaks that dot the area. The color of both will be stunning in a good year.
I bought my goats from a ranch on 337, so I'm familiar with the area. Consider this on the calendar!!
You will be in awe. The whole area around Vanderpool is absolutely stunning. The hills are much higher than the Kerrville, Hunt area and wonderfully winding too. The drive that goes from State Hwy 39 to FR 1340 through Hunt is probably still my favorite drive, though mostly because it represents Texas Limestone Hills and Rivers so well. But, FM 187 and part of FM337 around Lost Maples is probably the most awe inspiring for Texas Hill Country.
Thanks, for those links, Staci and Dave. I am definitely going to make that a day trip.
Well, maybe a two day trip. :-)

That's okay, I don't have any land either. My lot is about like yours and also with a darn HOA. My little lot is about 60 x 120. My best friend had land down in the hill country that I visited every year. They just sold it though so I don't know when I will make it there again. :( I am hoping that we will have a place in about 10 years though that we will eventually retire to.
Staci,
Unless you plan to retire early, you have a loooooonnnnng way to go to retirement!
Hi PvillePlanter,
We don't have land either - just a lot on a brand new development. Like you we have a ferocious HOA too!
That area is definitely on my list of must sees Sweezel, trouble is it keeps getting bigger and time seems to just disappear on me, but that looks as though is really worth the effort.
Pflugerville?
isn't that the home of the fleas?
wow! its been a long time since i was in Pflugerville.
sorry, i'm in arkansas now but still think i'm a texan.
thanks y'all for letting me look!

Hey! I knew I never should have volunteered that info last night. ;-)
Actually, if I can help it, it won't be that far off. LOL My DH is 12 years older than myself too so that should speed things up. Hopefully I can get something to enjoy on weekends and holidays until retirement. Or go into semi-retirement and do something gardening/plant related. I can dream can't I? Ha
Nadi, you are welcome here anytime. We will just bring out more memories and you will just have to drag your butt back to Texas.
We bought this house within a few months after I moved here from Virginia. At the time I thought the fact that the house took up most of the lot was a good thing (what WAS I thinking!) because of my Virginia gardening baggage. I was thinking in terms of a much shorter growing season, hard as rock ground, and having a mow 4 ft high grass in the spring. So less seemed like more at the time. I love my house and I love my yard.....now I just wish there were more of it! I guess the adage about the grass being greener on the other side of the fence is true. I would love acreage and no HOA. But on the other hand, I like my twice a week trash pick up, close to door step newspaper and mail delivery, and the proximity of a lot of conveniences.
LOL@ Pfugerville fleas......now get it right nadi....that's Pflugerville Pfleas! LOL
thanks sweezel.
i may take you up on that.
we just bought 10 acres north of here and i am already looking at land outside of mckinney thinking of selling the 10 and buying 1/3 in texas LOL
here is the tip of the year for y'all.
land is still $500. an acre in places around here. we bought prime land for $2500. an acre.. plus we are 20 minutes from the home of wally world! what more can one ask for?
TEXAS! thats what!

Nice Melva! I have noticed many areas north of Denton with beautiful post oaks and rolling land. I bet it is beautiful.
Nancy, I am with you on conveniences. I have to have them now. I grew up in the city and I am so used to having a store and gas station around the corner, city water, trash pick-up etc. that it would be hard. I think once I have no kids in the house and being able to just piddle and garden in a large area, see the stars at night, play my music outside on a deck, have tons of wildlife, etc will make up for it. I would not even be able to take advantage of the pluses now though so it would not be worth it.
Well don't feel bad Nadi. I might end up in your shoes too. What I would really like is land on one of the rivers in the Texas Hill country, but for the prices it's going for even now, I doubt that will happen. I will possibly end up in Eastern Oklahoma or Western Arkansas. I can't stray to far from home though. I really need to have trees, water access (river, stream or lake) and hills though. That is where I feel at peace.
So here's what we do......we start a commune in the hill country....sorta like a time share for gardeners.....we use it for r&r and that indescribable sense of whateverness the comes only from time spent gardening....I'm sure y'all know what I mean even though I don't have a word for it. Then when reality beckons and we need to replenish our wallets and have the security of a Wal-Mart within a 5 mile radius, we go back to our little HOA lots again. ;-)
You know what? That idea, has possibilities! Let me think on it for awhile...
LOL My best friend has suggested a commune many times - but a permanent home. She said she would raise goats and maybe grapes for wine while I garden and sell wildflower seeds and maybe vegetables. Those were her suggestions so far. We were trying to think of what the guys could do and my husband said her's could have a worm farm. LOL
LOL @ worm farm....I'm dyin here LOLOL.
Well we would need somebody to build the goat pens and the grape arbors and the storefront stand for selling seeds and veggies :-)
My friend just said that he could raise the worms and she could be a fishing guide on the side. Her not him. LOL
That's right. We need a carpenter and a sales person. ...and a wine making assistant and a soap maker (goat's milk soap), and a cheese maker and I could go on.
*raising hand to volunteer to be the sales person and the wine taster.....er...I mean wine making assistant.
