digging up Ginger Lillys

Rock Hill, SC(Zone 8a)

My Ginger Lillys have quit blooming but leaves are still green. They have been in the ground for 3-4 years and have spread. When should I dig some of them up and spread the others? And what do I do with the ones that I dig up, dry them or plant them? Thanks for any help. George

George, get ready for a tough job, lol! I'm no expert here but I divide mine with a strong fork in Febuary or March, that way I can fill in the holes with composted manure. If you want to dig now, you can lift them, let them dry well and store in a cool dry place above freezing. I had a bag of them sit for 3 months and had no problems except the ones that didn't dry well, they got moldy :(

Thanks Vi. I like your way for two reasons, I can dig and replant right away, and the big reason is that I don't have to do it now, LOL.

This looks like the last flowers this year and this cluster is the best all summer.

Ahhhh, and isn't the smell just incredible? It wafts all thru the yard nite and day! I'm really hoping I'll have a few more weeks, some are still in bud form, yay!

Ya know, I'm almost liking these more than brugs! Sure is a lot less work and more scent ;>}

You can always pitch a few my way, LOL!!!
They do smell heavenly.

With me being in Zone 5, does that mean they will freeze here? That is what I was told...mine this year did not bloom, suppose that it would need an additional year to get established and then bloom...

I may need to ship these to my SIL in CA.

Mine stay in the ground, and look great, I hope they don't freeze for you!

I saw some growing in the Chinese Gardens in Portland, Oregon. It does freeze there. They mulched them very heavily and the clump was HUGE....so the mulching must have been successful!

I love the scent!!!

And so do I, mine are still green, standing tall, they do fine here! so happy
