Hg,putting on its first flower bud.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks Clare,
Yes it must be the shorter daylight hours that triggered the flower bud developement.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I had one bloom on one in the garden and it didn't have any sex organs either.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Interesting! Thanks, Ada. I don't think I will cut up my other flowers now. They look so much prettier when they aren't shredded!

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I am holding my breath. Mine is loaded and just about ready to start opening. And wouldn't you know we are having a winter storm. Last year when It got cooler, they molded and dropped off.

Patricia

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you Patricia. It is raining here too and supposed to rain all week. I don't know if the rest of my buds will open or not. I can't really move my pot because it is a five-gallon container with roots growing out the drainage holes and into the soil below.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

The song says it never rains in southern California!!LOL!
Clare, rain all week?
Is this the normal raining season now?
Glad to hear that other people are having flower buds too,
Patricia, did you get any flowers in the spring,or does it seem just to be a fall bloomer?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Don. It most definitely does rain in California, but I do love that song. Yes, I think it is normal for now.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Clare its raining here too,but not from the sky!
I'd hate for you all to see a grown old man CRY!!!
I found my babies on the floor when I got home from work today.
Start over now,Maybe they'll come with age,everything does.arthritis,back pains ,forgetfullness,etc!!

Mc Call Creek, MS

Don't cry Tropicman. I'll bet you are going to get some more buds. I have one plant in a pot and the other in the ground. Between the two of them they have produced and dropped probably 30 buds. It LOOKS like one of them is finally going to open. I'm holding my breath.

Kay

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hi Kay,
Breathe,Breathe!!!
LOL!
I'm not giving up the ship yet!!!
Her sails will soar in the wind one day.
Good luck with yours, will all hold are breathes!!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oh, Don. I'm so sorry. That is a major bummer, but Kay is right. Please don't give up hope. You will probably get some more buds right away. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, my friend. I know you will get flowers eventually. You won't be able to help it with that green thumb of yours.

Kay, congrats on your bud starting to open! I can't wait to see pictures!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sorry to hear about the buds Don. I almost new before it happened that it would happen. Are you sure there isn't one hanging on someplace? She always left me with a teaser bud. Like Kay says, there will be more. I'd sure like to see someone post a picture of a full flush of blooms on HG. I'd like to think that someone has figured out how to raise this one to lots of blooms.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Saw one just starting to form, can't believe how fast that was,but I'm not going close to it,not even going to look at it!!LOL!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Don! Yay!

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

This one I have had for several years and this is the last year that I will feed and water it. It has set buds many times and they all eventually fall off. It will be pulled and thrown away because it is just not worth the trouble for me. Even if I got a few blooms each year, it still not worth it to me.

Clare your blooms very pretty.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Brugnanny. I agree with you. If mine proves to be more trouble than it is worth, it's history.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Last year I had two buds that rooted when it got cool at night and fell off. Here it is now. I am just hoping for a couple more weeks of decent weather. We were down to 45 last night.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Cool, Jerodsmom! I can't wait to see them open for you!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Patricia, I hope you catch a shot of those when they are open. Should look great.

I will give it a true Shirley. We are suppose to have rain all next week. They are saying it might get real heavy at times. I am so hoping for the best.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I'm giving up on HG this year. It will not have a place in my greenhouse to just sit and take up room that could be used by another plant that needs a warm spot for the winter.

This is the second season of me growing HG and though i've had hundreds of buds on it,i've not yet been blessed to see one single flower open on it.

Just daybefore yesterday the stupid thing had buds that had already dropped about 4 inches out of the calyx and I thought for sure i'd get to finally see a bloom but guess what? The next day the bud was laying on the ground at the base of the pot.

The plant is quite large and has a nice form to it but it is a goner this year. I'm not putting any more time or energy into a plant that does not perform or grow well for me. Besides i've still got creamsickle and double peach to enjoy in the spring.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Can everybody mention the age of there HG,and does anybody know who has one that does bloom nicely and on a regular bases?
Thanks

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi David. Great to see you here.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

HElllloooo David !

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

My Hg is 2 this year. It is the first brug that was shared with me last year when I started growing them.

Hi Ada.

Mc Call Creek, MS

Well, my bloom opened this morning. I am really disappointed in it. It opened little and white. Our temps got up to 97 degrees today. I misted several times during the day and turned the ceiling fan on the porch on to try to cool it a little. It got really droopy during the heat of the day. This evening it has perked up just a tad and turned a very faint peachy-pink. Still little, still not pretty, still no skirt has dropped, although I can see at least one. If this is all she does for me, she's a goner. I think our climate is just too hot and humid for this one.

Clare's is so pretty! If I could get one to do that, I'd definitely keep it.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Hey Scooter and hello to all of my old brug friends and welcome to any newbies that I havent' met yet.
I havent put in much time here this year because i've had soooo much going on. I am still working 6days---60 hours per week, have had family in and out of town since June and my only living grandparent,my 84 year old grandmother with whom I happen to be very close to had a stroke on July 16th. So as you can see i've been much too busy to do any kind of gardening and online playing this summer. Hopefully when things get better with my g-ma and I get caught up with things that need to be done around the yard then i'll be able to get in here a little more often.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Kay. I hope yours does better tomorrow! Maybe there is still hope for it to turn into a pretty butterfly.

This is my first year growing HG, Don, and the cutting that I sent to you is the same age as mine in the way that they were cuttings at the same time, but they are from different plants.

Hi David. I am sure sorry about your grandma and hope she recovers quickly.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

David, I hope things improve and settle down for you and your family. You've had a lot going on this year and working sixty hours a week doesn't leave much time to do anything else. Hope Grandma is improving and continues to improve.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My HG just went through it's third summer. I was going to toss it last year, but it had buds, so I held it in the garage until only one of them bloomed and since it was there, I let it stay. My mistake. I wasted another summer watering and caring for it to only have that one lonely bloom. If I knew what the trick was to help it hold its buds and bloom, I would have held on one more year, but I have too many others that can show me color and satisfaction to keep messing with a foliage plant, and that is all it has been.............foliage.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Does anyone no how many years hg has been on the market?
I think there must be something as a bad vareity going around,I can't believe the plant society, would allow such a bad plant as this be allowed to circulate along the market place,do these go thru test trials such as roses do?

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I have had my H.D. or two years. Last year it got three buds in mid Fall. After a while they started getting moldy and just dropped off. Mine is loaded now, but this morning they don't look anymore open than they did yesterday. We had light rain all day and are suppose to have rain all next week, so I am not holding out high hopes for it to finish blooming out. But there is a little glimmer of hope.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks, are these always a fall bloomer?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

OH good.. this is just the bunch of disillusioned growers from which to beg a cutting/plant [ ha ha I guess seed is really put of the question for this one]..
I've always wanted one.. guess beecause there is so much of a problem with them.. and I'd like to take a cutting to bloom in a rapid time frame.. no blooms .. few blooms or dropped bloomed plants are fine.. I don't need really more than one.. maybe a cutting from a tall one.. Get rid of it now before the winter sets in.. please contact me directly at the daves name listing.. not at the adopt an unwanted difficult plant.com site..
All the best wishes to thoes still with hope... ...Gordon

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

I've had the plant in the ground in a pot since May, and it is the lushish, healthyest 7 ft tree, without a bit of stem showing. It is so thick with leaves at the top, it's hard to rell what's there. Not one bug hole to be seen. This alone makes it worth overwintering -- it has two main stems, and after reading all the above, I think I'll cut one stem to the base, and root it in the greenhouse, and the main plant I'll put in a warmed shed to go dormant.Next spring, I'll find the most recommended "blossom making" fertilizer, skipping most nitrogen. Any suggestions from the pros?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Monika swears by ferts with a low middle number.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hmm,strange most blooming fertilizers, have a high middle number,
so whats up with the low middle number?

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay, showing my newbieness. What is the full name of HG?
