Attractive plant markers - step by step

Newburgh, IN(Zone 6a)

I was searching all over the internet to find some attractive plant markers, that did not cost a fortune, and I could not find any.

I did not like the metal ones and the nicer ones cost at least $3 or more each. So I came up with this idea. Wire $.22 each

Little Wire $.11 each Pots 3 for $1 = $.33 each, Paint ( I had the paints but cost for each I figure about $.40 for a total cost of each little marker at around $1.00. Here is step by step.

I took #8 copper wire 18" long and made a hanger.

Step 2 - Cut a 6" piece of the small wire and put a plastic bead on it. Twist the ends together to make a hanger.

Step 3 - Spray paint the pots with any outdoor paint, I used white. Then when dry decorate and lable the pot with the name of your plant. I used those little paint pens - they are easy to draw with. I put the scientific name of my plants on the inside of the pots. I put a short name on the top so I could see the name of the plant from the top.

Final step - Put the little wire hanger up through the hole in the bottom of the pot. and hang on the large wire hanger.

That could easily give me a winter project that the kids could help with. Cool

Hang them in your garden. I also found some little tiny metal bird houses that I am going to paint, but these were $.99 each so the cost of these would be about $1.75 each. I thought I would use one of these in each of my garden beds to lable the ground cover.

If anyone decides to make these I would love to see your results. Take care and enjoy.

I love these. You're right...much better than the boring metal ones. Maybe I can dress up my metal ones with those pony beads. :)

This project was presented on Rebecca Coles' gardening show a couple of years ago. They didn't turn out very good when I tried to make them, but if one has any painting skills, they could be really cute. I found the little pots at a salvage store where I paid $2 for 24 pots. I would like to see how others would paint theirs - I still have 23 pots left to do something with.

I bought little bird houses, watering cans, and pots from my local craft store. My mother-in-law sat down and painted them with little bugs, plants, etc. and now I have a great memory and practical keepsake of her visit. Here is a pic I posted for the square foot thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1349031

Very cute! Now I need to find your thread on doing the paving. Do you think an out of shape older woman (me( could do a 250 ft by 3 ft path without killing her back or would I be better off just putting down mulch again?

Looks like a bell or a lampshade, yet, it isn't! Very neat idea that triggers my own -- use smaller plastic cups and the like. And you can write the names on anything waterproof and hang it down on such neat hangers. I've used tin foil for shrubs by engraving the name with a pencil and have curled the name-strips around one of the branches.
