And this is my lighted shelf unit in the basement. Only one shelf is lit right now, but the second and possibly a third will be fitted with fixtures if necessary for starting seeds during the winter.
Now...I've shown you some pictures. (See...I really DO have them! LOL )
~julie~
OVERWHELMED?? Part Two :-)
Julie,
That is a great photo. On close up the clarity is so crisp.
Thanks for showing.
Molly
:^)))
Thanks Molly

Stay overwhelmed? I can't help it. If it's not one thing, it's another. The last few weeks had been other things that were not gardening. It was nice to be able to get out there and make something pretty and feel productive. Something besides watering and weeding.
Cool picture/painting of the barn. I have photoshop and another program, but I have never really played around much.
I am so jealous of all you who have places to put your plants. We have no basement and the only windows in my house that get any direct sun are up in my step-son and step daughters room and in my dining room. I have an open, high ceiling house plan downstairs and can't put much in the dining room because it is to the left of the entry with no door or doorway. I have an old stone topped coffee table against the window with stuff on top of it. I get about 30 minutes to an hour of sun in the breakfast nook too so I put a couple things on that window sill.
Here's something that overwhelmed me last week. Being Bobbie can't get to where the pond used to be I moved the pond. I took it out of the ground and brought it up to the house so we could go out and sit and relax as the water tumbles down the water fall. I put a lot of potted plants around it until I get to block it up or rock it up. I'm thinking about using matching rocks for pond and the house. And just stack the flat rocks.
Wonder what happened to the picture at the bottom. Wasn't on there before.
Molly...I know just what you're saying. And you're right, sometimes it just feels GOOD to get your hands in the dirt and know that later on it'll all be worth the effort.
JIm, I LOVE that pond! I'm sure that Bobbie enjoys having it closer to the house where she can see and hear it, too. That's a lot of work, guy...but it looks like you had a great helper right beside you! (He remind me of my boys when they were that age...you can just see the mischief in those eyes!)
What are the "spikey" plants in that first shot (top Center and right side)?
~julie~
Julie it was one of those tropicals that you see sometimes at Walmart and Home Depot that doesn't have a name on it. Just said assorted plants. When I bought them I thought I' would get one summer out of them and when winter comes they would be gone. I stuck them in the ground around the pond and they don't even die back. Stay green the whole winter. I probably just put the kiss of death on them. LOL
You need one I'll try and see if I have an extra.
JIm,
What a great thing for you to do. You and Bobbie will really enjoy having it up closer now.
I had a pond just like that at my old house. I wanted to bring it here, but after moving my house stuff and the rest of my garden.....I just didn't have the energy, so I had to leave it.
Maybe someday I'll have another.
Molly
:^)))
Jim, how sweet! What a great pond and cute grandson. Your a great man to move that pond to where Bobbie could enjoy it. That really tells her you love her when you would go to all that for her :)
Susan McCoy
Amen Susan!
Nicole
JIm...thanks but no thanks. :-D The reason I asked was I thought maybe you kneww what *I* had. I "rescued" four of them out of a very willing neighbor's yard. They were so root bound in tiny little pots that I had to do major surgery to get them untangled from themselves and the other plants in there with them. So far, I haven't killed them...(Maybe that's *my* kiss of death...hehehe)
~julie~
OK...I'm *not* overwhelmed...I'm NOT overwhelmed...I'm NOT OVERWHELMED!!
hehehehe
NEVER trade with two people that have the same first name at the same time! Monday I sent out a couple of trade packages. I was SO proud of myself for getting them out in a timely manner...not a day too late! I was also proud of myself for getting the trade recorded in my Tracker and watching 17 or so "NOT SENT" turing into "COMPLETED"...until the boilerplate email came up on the screen to be sent to one of the recipients.
Something was wrong here...the email said that my trade was to consist of one thing, and my DH was on his way to the Post Office with something else! (Uh oh...first indication that something was NOT right. hehehe)
Since this person and I had a "trade" going...and she'd already sent me postage for her package, I enclosed the Priority stamp inside the package I sent her. I immediately wrote to her telling her that I'd gotten mixed up about the items I was supposed to send, and told her that I'd send the right stuff out immediately. I didn't really mention the returned postage or the "trade" in that email.
I got a return email telling me that she understood and it was fine. But she didn't mention the fact that I was returning her postage or the "trade" items that she was going to send. I didn't think any more about it...UNTIL I got a DG email from the other person with the same name, telling me that my package from her was on the way, but that she didn't need or want any more plants.
Hmmmm....SECOND indication that "something was wrong." I was *really* confused because just the day before I'd gotten an email from my trader that she was really excited and couldn't wait to get the 'stuff.'
OMG!!! I'm working with TWO people that have the SAME first name!!! First I go into shock...I panic...it subsides...I still haven't told anyone what *really* happened (So don't tell a soul, ok? LOL) And now, I'll be the recipient of some of the MOST expensive coleus in the world! and I still don't know exactly WHERE those plants are coming from. :-D I just hope I send the postage to the RIGHT one! :-O :-D
Overwhelmed...? Not me....
~julie~
(julie goes off mumbling ...I'm not overwhelmed...I'm not....I'm not..I'm not...)
HAHAHAHA!!! ROTFLMBO!!!
Sounds like something that could happen to me!
By the way Julie, did you receive my package yet? I still haven't received yours either!! What's going on?
(kidding!!!) Isn't trading just a blast??
Nicole
Julie - Are you so overwhelmed that you would you want to reconsider my offer of a box of cuttings. I assure you they will just add to the confusion!!! NotMartha has said she would like a box, so it could be sent to her. I surely don't want to add to your situation
Nicole...gee...I have you down for sending me a WHOLE GARDEN! Where the heck is it???
>-:}{ :-D
Trading IS a blast! I just have to remember WHO and WHAT I'm trading...
LOL Judy! Don't you DARE give my cuttings away! :-D :-D :-D (I'm sending you POSTAGE, right? You don't want any plants...RIGHT? ROTFL
~julie~
Sorry I haven't been around in a couple of days. Bobbie started having dizzy spells yesterday morning and I haven't had time to get on Dave's.
Thanks everyone for all your comments anbout the pond.
Julie I received your box today and thanks so much. I guess the daylilies were for me. LOL
Just kidding. It was a box with the sweet potatoe. Sure is nice. Arrived in great shape.
Jim is Bobbie okay now? Hope so.. :)
I dumpster dove for plants today!! Well, not really, but I saw a landscape truck in front of a subdivision and they were just ripping out all the coleus and begonias and I made a u-turn. If I'd had my truck and not the minivan with two tired kids in it, there's no tellin how much I'd have taken. Okay, now please tell me.. what do I do to overwinter coleus and begonias? Thanks!! They said that they take them to the dump... Gee, maybe I need to hang out there. :) I'm a poop haulin, dumpster divin momma!!
Susan McCoy
OMG, OMG, OMG i just stumbled and splashed boiling soup on my hand, i downed a glass of wine, poured a bowl full of vinegar into which i placed my hand ...... trying not to cry i turned to daves's for a distraction... now i'm laughing my behind off ... thank you susan
COLD WATER JUDY - PUT IT UNDER COLD RUNNING WATER AND THEN AFTER A WHILE KEEP ICE ON IT UNTIL THE BURNING SENSATION STOPS!
Ouchhhhhhh!
My wax begonias have come back from the roots the last couple years. Plant them in a protected spot close to your house, mulch them, and if you have a mild winter, you could have them do the same for you. Someone else will come along and give you better ideas for the coleus.
Susan,
I think some people keep coleus in the house as a house plant during the winter but what I'm seeing more of us people taking cuttings and keeping them rooting over the winter. Julie can probably answer you since she is a coleus raising maniac now!!
Staci, are you a stay at home mom or do you work outside the home? The reason I ask is wondering if we are both gonna be fired for spending so much time on Dave's during the day! lol
I work outside the home - just on the other side of Woodall Rogers Freeway from you in The Crescent building. My job is very quiet/boring 75% of the time. My boss does not mind that I am on here as long as I kick my butt into gear if something comes up. It's just the two of us in this office and I have been here for almost 8 years so he understands that I need something to do when it's quiet. I am basically just a nice voice and occasional assistant that my company provides because it has plenty of money. LOL
Judy...OMG! Hope you're ok now!
I always keep an aloe plant in the house for those kitchen burns. (I poured a whole pyrex pot of camp stove boiled coffee on a 3 year old in thermal p.j's many years ago. Shouldhave been 3rd degree burns over 80% of his body. Broke off a chunk of aloe, rubbed the joice over the burns and rushed the child to the hospital. The E.R. doctor didn't believe us when we told him what happened. He said that the aloe had done a miraculous job of saving the little boy from a lifetime of scars.)
Jim...that was just a *little* sweet potato root. :-D I don't think it could be mistaken for a daylily though. hehehe Glad it got there in good condition. (I hope Bobbie is feeling better - I worry about you two, I hope you know that.)
Susan...the best way to keep those Coleus over winter is....SEND THEM TO ME!!!
>:-}{ hehehehe. Break off any damaged pieces from the plants, put the pieces in water and let them root; soak the plants for a little while (over night should be fine) and pot the up and find a spot for them. Mine are scattered all over the house for now, but I don't mind. They'll probably get leggy over the winter, but that just means there'll be more stem for rooting new plants for the garden in early spring. The begonias, that's someone else's area...but I'll be watching for the answer, too.
~julie~
Goes to show you I am gettin' old, Staci. Now that you remind me, I remember you telling me that you worked at the Crescent. I used to be so busy I couldn't even think about DG during the day. I worked for the Chairman of the Board, but he stepped down in March, so we went from crazy to bored. BTW, I went to Calloways at lunch (the one on Greenville) and bought a few half price, end of the year, perennials. Don't have any more room for them myself so taking to my daughter, but I just can't pass up half price!
I knew I just needed to jog your memory. Ü
Oooh, thanks! I have been by the Calloway's in McKinney and the one on Preston in Plano looking for the half price perennials this year with no luck. I got a Meyer Lemon and Hardy Hibiscus at Calloways half off last year. Hmmm... Now I just need to decide if I should go by and try to avoid the temptation. I really don't have room for anything either, but there might be something I have to have. Whadya get?
Just waiting for you to ask! :-) Two Texas Sage "Green Cloud," and one minature crape myrtle. The Green Clouds are so much prettier than the one you usually see around here. Instead of silver leaves, they are pretty green. The ones I bought today were full of dark pink blooms. I think they were three gallon on sale for $12.50 each. The minature crape myrtle is as big as it is going to get (I think) and is about two foot wide and 18 inches tall. I got this one because it had the most beautiful fall leaves but still had a few flowers on it -- 3 gal. for 10.00. They also have some crape myrtles that are taller than me on sale for 10.00. They are in the back and it says "in store special."
I went by on the way home, but was a good girl. There was nothing I had to have though the full price Ilex "Sky Pencil" Holly. I need it for the large pots that flank my entry, but it was just too darn expensive. Hopefully I can find it cheaper later. I did not see the minature crepe myrtles, but I had seen the Green Clouds clearanced at the Calloway's in McKinney. I wish I had a place to put them. I just don't have the full sun for them. Of course you probably don't either, but I bet your daughter does being in a newer house with little shade yet.
I did check the Calloways in McKinney again after that. They had about 7 Cyclamin for $1.99. The only thing different from them and the ones on sale for $4.99 were the pot shape. I think they were getting rid of the few they had left of thier first batch, because they no longer had a flush of blooms. I bought two red and the one white, but had to buy the full price 2nd white. Still $11 is better than $20.
I have seen the Cyclamin but know nothing about it. Is it a house plant? Speaking of the "pencil" holly, have you seen the pencil barberry? I love those and wish I had a place for them. Still trying to work some in to my front bed in my mind! My daughter does have full sun and the Texas Sage should thrive there.
Actually they are outdoor plants. They are supposed to be the only thing that blooms here in the shade during the winter. I have looked at them the last couple years, but they are so expensive I can't bring myself to buy an annual for that much. Though I did read on Garden Web Texas Gardening forum that someone has them under Oak Trees from last year. They went dormant during the heat, but recently started popping back up and getting blooms. I guess they act as perennials if we have a mild summer. I am going to put them in that those pots in my entry because they are in mostly shade. I'll tell you how well they do.
I have heard about the pencil barberry, I think here on DG, recently. I think I checked them out and was worried about using them because of the heat of a raised pot and they did not seem as suited to our area. I need to look into them again. I really was hoping for anything besides a Leland Cypress, or cedar type plant so I am glad to have options.
Staci, I don't know if it would even be an option for you but my daughter has Rosemary in the shape of a Christmas tree on each side of the front of her house. It is about 2-1/2 feet tall.
Now that I have time on my hands for gardening....it's such a temptation to move *south*! You girls (and Jim, too!) make it really rough for me. ;-) You got some nice deals.
So did anyone else fall prey to any of those FINAL CLOSEOUT BARGIN GIVEAWAY sales? (I did. ~grin~ I couldn't help myself when I saw Lady ferns (even if they *are* just 'starts') for a little over a buck. And there were a few other things...hehehehe My husband is going to KILL me! :-D)
~julie~
$1.00 a fern!?! Did you by them in bulk? lol
I certainly couldn't pass that up even if I didn't have anymore room!
I almost did that last year (rosemary), but I have decided I want something more permanent. Everytime I look at them I can't bring myself to spend that much money on something that will have to be moved when it gets wide. Especially when I only have room for one rosemary and have one. LOL I still want to just blow the money for the season though because they are just so cute through christmas. I think the same thing about those other cypress trees (can't remember the name) that they sell as live Christmas trees at Sam's Club every year. I continue to resist, though it's hard. :)
Julie, come on down! You can come stay with me for a few weeks if ya want. It's been in the low 90s and high temps should stay above 75 for at least a another week or so. I would love to have another gardener join me that loves it as much as I do. Of course 30 minutes around my kids and you'd be running, fast, back to Wisconsin. LOL
Terrie...they're just little ones, I'm sure. You know how online dealers are...they show you the mature item and send you 1" sticks and you'd better know what to do with them. :-D But yes I bought a dozen or so. ;-)
Sweezel...I was around my granddaughter for 30 minutes this afternoon...and I think that was what made me REALLY want to come down there. Maybe I just need to stop in Oklahoma...somewhere my sister *isn't* ! :-D (Be nice, julie! hahaha) Thanks for the invite...uh...snow is looking good. LOL
(No! That should read ROTFLMAO!! )
~julie~
Julie... this thread getting very long. Maybe for Part Three?
Trunnels and Sweezel - I have been wanting either of the pencils you discussed myself! I wonder if there is a way to get them cheaper... I am going to be digging up this oversized bush beside my front porch soon and want 'Sky Pencil' to fill that spot!
hmmm.. Surely we can put our heads together and come up with something!!
Nicole
