OVERWHELMED?? Part Two :-)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Julie88, stop that! You are giving me all kinds of ideas!!! Until DG I always thought you had to re-start every year from seed... Silly me!!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Nicole...you're not alone! It was the coleus cuttings that got me thinking "SAVE MONEY, SAVE MONEY." But when the Sweet Basil I had cut for cooking rooted in the glass in the kitchen that I decided "YIPPPEEE" This is EASY!

Welcome aboard the "Addicted Train!" :-D

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

hmmm,,, i have 2 Basils I am not looking forward to waiting on to grow again next year - will they live in my house??? I just love Basil!!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

You BET they will...just give them enough light, and you'll have your basil. (I just cut off 4-6" pieces and stick them in water. They usually root for me in just a few days. I don't plant mine in pots until they have a fairly good size root system. It can be difficult to spread the roots on the soil when they're wet, so I set my pot inside a bowl of water, "dunk" the roots a couple of times to seperate them, then start filling the pot with my soiless mix - 1/2 peat & 1/2 perlite...it's worked well for me.)

Go gettum, Nicole! :-D

~julie~

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

HAHAHAHAHHAHA It's ALIVE It's ALIVE!!!!

Or will be when I am finished anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Julie!!

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

ahhhhhhhh owwwww A coleus tree! Wow! I'm going to snip some coleus and root it in water and try that. Isn't Garden Gate wonderful?

Ya know, I've been on Dave's for a bit now, but I've never traded because I don't really have anything to offer just yet. Folks regularly send stuff for postage?? How incredibly wonderful of them :) Ya mean that Jim isn't the only saint here?! :)

I have seen the "for postage" threads, but haven't responded since I would want to give something back as well. I was just On Ebay checking gardening things and I did a search of "cuttings". Someone was selling variegated privet and I thought it looked nice so I did a little research on it and as I turns out it's an invasive white fly magnet! Whoops.. Think I'll pass on that one!

Jim, I received your wonderful email and I am not familiar with all that you listed. However, I am just all tickled about the Japanese Kerria you have to share. I know all about it and have wanted some for a while. I have learned all about it and it is an old fashion plant that use to be in just about everyone’s garden years ago, and it just isn't widely marketed anymore. I love yellow (and red) and I would love to get some Kerria cuttings from you! I am really hesitant to take any more from you than I could trade back. I really don't want to take advantage! However, I will learn more about the plants you have for trade and see how I can feel better about taking them from you!

Hey Susan! Just wait until people have all their seeds cleaned and ready to go this fall/winter. I imagine there will be a ton of for SASE posts. I am going to have some myself if I ever get all my seeds cleaned. I have tons of certain ones! Keep your eyes peeled!! DG is really going to make this a better winter for me!
:--D

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Susan...Garden Gate is my *favorite* gardening magazine. I love their format and the info is *useable* they always give alternative plants for zones and climates. (I've asked DH for the full set of back issues for Christmas...IF I can *wait* that long! hehehehe)

Don't be afraid to join in on the "Postage trades." I felt a little funny about it at first too. But people are serious about sharing and really don't mind us asking.

~julie~

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

That's so true Julie! Seeds only last so long anyway and who needs 100's of the same plant in their yard? Unless they have a really BIG yard!

Nicole

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Susan these aren't cuttings they will be rooted plants. I don't want anything in return. I received a box today of brugs, some rooted and some cuttings that will root. About 20-25. Please don't send anything to me for the plants. If I didn'twant you to jhave them I wouldn't have offered. You'll get an opportunity down the road to repay me by sharing with another newbie. I have a problem with my kids and friends also with them buying plants for me and I hate to hurt their feelings so I take thme and stick it in the ground not for me but for them. I have a lot of plants that I didn't offer to you because I didn't want to OVERWHELM you. I'm be OVERWHELMED before long with moving an Asiatic lily bed and a glad bed making room for more brugs. The Kerria would probably be a good item for the fence area.
Check this out and drool. Another red passion. Hey I think these passion plants have become a passion. LOL

I have a lot of seeds also I'll be posting about later.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree about the for postage! Susan, Ya wants some seeds, too? LOL

I just divided and bagged up quite a few seeds last night for a swap in two weeks. What does not go then will be shared here. I also stopped on the side of the road yesterday and filled a brown lunch sack with Hibiscus seed heads (look at my post to the identification forum, if anyone wants any). I did this only because they would be wasted and I just know someone somewhere will enjoy them even if I don't have room. There were so many I could go back and fill two grocery sacks with seed heads.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Sweezel...you and were doing the same thing yesterday. Running around in the wild with our paper lunch bags rescue-ing seed heads! LOL (I don't go anywhere without my lunch bags!)

~julie~

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

:) My husband got worried because I got home so late last night. I would have gotten more, but i only had one sack. I meant to put ziplocks in the car, but haven't.

I sat and watched the new tv show Lost, which I had recorded, while seperating the seeds from the heads late last night. You should see the paper plate piled with seed. I also squished quite a few of these spotted bugs that I found in the seed pods. Hopefully, they did not destroy too many of the seeds. :/

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Sweezel, Lost is the only show I look forward to watching and I forgot all about it last night playing around on DG! :-(

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

So I'm not the only one who uses white paper plates for sorting seeds, eh? :-D (Don't use the foam ones...static will get ya every time! And whatever you do, DON'T SNEEZE, COUGH or LAUGH while sorting. (In other words....DON'T read DG! :-D ;-D)

~julie~

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah, I buy the large 300 or 500 packs of those thin cheap plates from Sams Club and they work great. I am with you with the sneeze or laugh. There have also been a few times I have tipped the plates accidentally and had seeds slide off. I still like using them though.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

My two year old loves to mess with me when I am sorting seeds...

Leave the ceiling fan off too! LOL

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh yeah, sweezel...tip em over, spill coffee on 'em, mix up the chaff with the real seeds, accidently spill two kinds of seeds on the same plate...been there, done that! :-)

Never thought of that one, NIcole! LOL

~julie~

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Sweezel - I know this is off subject but I would love to know what happend on Lost this week.... You can e-mail me! Don't worry about it if it's too much trouble though... Typing still takes time when you could be sorting seeds!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I kinda know what it's like to have a two year old. Well, maybe not.
...I often sit on the floor in the dining room doing my seeds and the Chihuahua will want me and come trampling close to my seed plate. Of course when I tell Paco no, to go away, he just lays there looking hurt, because he does not understand why I can't play.

Ohhh, speaking of Chihuahuas, anyone want one? Grrrr... The two we have, have started peeing everywhere again. I had my shoe box full of seed bags on the floor in a corner of the dining room under a table. There was no top on it and guess what one of the Chi's did... Sprayed it! Actually I think both of them did as much as there was. Luckily all my seed bags were in seperate ziplocks (labeled A-C, etc). Ick!! That was the last straw. I have already sent an e-mail to the local Chihuahua rescue offering them to some wonderful person who has the time to give them. We just don't when we are at work all day. We knew we did not when we got them, but they came as puppies with the stepkids when they moved in. Being switched back to our house by a judge and jury was tramatic enough so we just bit our toungues and took the pups in.

Sorry for the rant. Now back to gardening....

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I think I will stick with my 2 yr old! At least he is wearing a diaper! Have you tried kenneling them? At least you could get a bit of peace!

Speaking of saving seeds - is this wrong? I am leaving for a Dr. Appt in a few minutes. I will probably get home early today and my mom has my son. I didn't tell her I would get home early (I didn't lie either mind you) so I could finish cleaning my Castors! I just don't want to take the chance of my son eating one, or worse. It's just that I have to grab a few minutes when I can!!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

We were kenneling them last winter and they hated it. They did not have any problem going potty in the kennel and sitting in it. Also, I think Chi's just get their feelings hurt too easily because they will howl for an hour. They spend lots of time in the backyard now, but it's getting too cold for that. They would probably do better if we did not have two males, but if we get rid of one, we have to do the same for the other. They "belong" to each of the boys (13 & 16), but of course you see who has ended up taking care of them. The agreement was that they would be in charge of training them, but the boys gave up long ago. They sure make me appreciate how wonderful our Golden is.

LOL! I don't blame you for grabbing a few extra minutes when you can, NC. I saw the picture of him on the slide in the Photos forum. He sure looks like a doll! But, I am sure he is a handful. Ü

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

Just dropping in for a minute, then back to visit S. in hospital.
For the "left-overs", many of the local towns around here, have compost sites that the folks in the particular municipalities can drop off their stuff-son't see why, if there is one around, that someone cannot visit.
I checked with a local Wal-Mart, about giving me % off on a bad shape orchid-they wouldn't do it; they get credit for sending back dead plants!!!!!
If I get a chance, I will check with the smaller, local centers.
My sister, in NJ, gets plants from the floral shop that she works at; another gardening buddy gets the same benefits!! Can't hurt to ask...
good luck and will check back in about the seeds that I have and don't want and other stuff.
Hugs to all-Marcia

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I will be happy to send anyone money for postage in exchange for plants or seeds, I am just getting started with gardening, and I am amazed at what is out there I have never heard of, so PLEASE keep me in mind.

Doris

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Doris,

Do you want any of those Hibiscus seeds? I think I have figured out that it is 'Fireball' Hibiscus Hybrid. I also have tons of 'Profusion' Zinnia seeds among other things. Just let me know...

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

Sweezel, are the Chis neutered? That might help if they aren't. They dirty a crate? That is a hard one. Most dogs won't do that.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

sweezel you have mail

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Doris I'll see waht I can scrounge up for you also.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvi, nope, they aren't neutered. I have talked to the vet about it and planned on it, but was just waiting for the right time and money. I think it would probably help with them peeing in the house. They were doing real good as long as we put them out often (they still don't go to the door) and stuff, but now we let them in from outside and they pee somewhere 5 minutes later.

I think I am just fed up with the boys not taking care of them. Plus, we can't kennel them in the winter while at work without having to clean out the kennel all the time. We have thought about a doggy door, but our back door is the kind with a big pane of glass - not enough wood around it to put one in.

Anyway, I guess this fits the subject, because taking care of these pups sure contributes to my overwhelmed feeling.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Wow! I go outside to plant my "skunk bulbs" (Fritillaria) in the mole tunnels...and this place goes nuts! hehehe I LOVE IT!!!

So I'm just going to say a big
Hello!!! to everyone ...and head back to my work before it gets to dark to see!

Doris...I have a lot of tall red cannas to share if you'd like some. I'm not sure what cultivar/variety they are as they were given to me several years ago. Just let me know.

Be back later!

~julie~

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

Sweezel, you can buy a glass panel that has a doggy door in it that fits into your existing door. I'm not describing this well. I'll look for a picture.

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

try this:
http://www.petsafe-warehouse.com/dog_doors/patio_panel_doors.htm

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Now, it's me that was not describing it well enough. I have seen those but it's not a sliding glass door, but a regular door with a pane of glass, like a single french door: http://www.pella.com/products/windows_patiodoors/Detail.asp?path=/products/patio/french/proline

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi everyone ! Sweezel, I managed to get a TON of Castors cleaned but I kept going out collecting so know I have a TON more!! LOL I haven't even gotten around to most of my other seeds!! Talk about overwhelmed! Missed you all yesterday afternoon!

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Goodness.. Been gone for a day and I missed all this conversation!

Well Okay then... Please tell me where to send the money and I'll take seeds, cuttings and rooted plants then and not feel guilty about it and I will pay it forward!! God Bless ya! Jim your an angel for planting those plants you don't really need or want. It reminds me of all the pictures I hang of my kids art... ya love it because it's theirs :)

I had two cats get extemely upset when I had my first baby and then my second. I tried forever to work with them, and now the remaining living one lives in my basement with a cat door and he's not happy. I feel bad, but have a serious aversion to pee pee all over my home!!

Jim, I'll research the plant list you sent me and I'll email and we can talk about the plants! :) That passion is a beauty. :)

Susan McCoy-- Who will try harded to be here and keep up with the conversation! Julie.. How tickled you must be to have started such an hugely popular thread!!!!!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Susan...I'm just tickled that people are talking HERE! That makes me happy...and comfortable. I think I'll try keep "get-together" threads posted, they're SO much fun!

~julie~

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Susan I thought you had to take time off to go to the doctor with the poison ivy. I did miss you . I can give you a run down on most of the plants along with pictures. I haven't learned how to root the passion vine yet or I would get one started for you. I got the first one that I posted from Windsurfer and she rooted it for me and brought it to the Ky. roundup last year. She said the name is Alata Passion Vine. The last one is one that one of my sons gave to me through my wife for mothers day last year. LOL It certainly isn't one that I was referring to about having plants given to me that I didn't want. If ya'll could see my yard with all the pots sitting around with things that need to go in the ground you would know why I don't need any more plants. Here's a picture of my sidewalk with potted plants waiting on JIm. I might add since this picture was made I have been to two roundups and a visit to a hosta farm with Susan amd received 24 brugs and 2 rootbeer plants in the mail. Please don't send unless I ask.
