I have developed fairly deep layers of mulch, much of which is turning to "good stuff". But when I plant a plant with a small root ball, I can't get down to the soil below the mulch. Should I just put a handful of potting soli in the hole in the mulch? If I dug clear down to the dirt, the root ball would be way too deep. thanks for your suggestions!
Deep mulch and planting
sounds to me like to have to start roto-tilling some of that mulch into the ground.
Adding some potting soil to the planting hole helps the plant and also may help the mulch break down faster. It helps to pull some of the mulch back from the new plant. I used this technique when planting in my Lasagna Bed pictured on this forum.
I often pull back the mulch to the soil, plant, and make a "cup" for watering my new plants. Maybe you could add soil and make a "cup" like MaryE suggested. Then when the plant can take it-put mulch closer.
