Red Berries on Lily of the Valley?

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi All ☺

After recuperating from a torn chest wall muscle X2 (fancy name is costochronditis), I am slowly getting back to the garden.

I have these red berries on some lily of the valley plants I have and I'm not sure if they can be considered seeds? Has anyone seen this before with their lily of the vallies?

Thanks much!

Hi Morph, the photo shown w the red berries, is not a Lily of the Valley,,,it looks to me like some sort of native terrestrial orchid found in the woods. But I cant place its name at the moment,,,putty root comes to mind but i dont think that is correct. There is another plant similar to that,,,but i just cant remember its name...you may want to re post the photo in the ID board? Will look forward to seeing what it is!

Indeed as will I! The plant produces typical lily of the valley flowers in the spring and it has even spread as I would expect this plant to do. I can't believe I've been faked out by it! I'll take another photo and post in the id forum. Great idea ~ thx ☺

HI, Some of my LOV set seeds like that in the fall here..depends maybe on the weather/amount of water.

HI, I never plant any seeds-they do just fine sending out those runners-just figured that they awere seeds like the Jack in the Pulpits... I only get these on a few plants-don't know why ....

Geez - I'm surprised. Mine multiply like bunnies - I jsut can't seem to keep up with them. And, yes, mine have berries this year for the first time! Check out the ID thread on this.

Thanks, all! I did post another thread in the id forum per rnc48's suggestions. It's at http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/460830/

Some good input there, too.

Guess the red berries tend to appear on more mature plants. Thanks again.

That's news - thanks!

Found this thread while searching for something else. Interesting! I've had those berries one time on my lily of the valley. Someone told me that was rare, and it must have just been because mature plants get them.

I was recently contemplating ordering some LOV. The
catalog said they had red berries, & that the berries
are poisonous. Since I have pets I decided to forget
about them.

Those are Lily of the Valley. They are putting out the seeds because they are trying to compete with the Winter Creeper. Winter Creeper will win over LOV every time. Rip out a space around the LOV and you will get better growth. Sandy

Sandy, thanks a bunch!!!! I wondered if those berries were seeds and how to harvest them if it was possible. I'll be ripping out the winter creeper tomorrow ~ hope it's not too late! Thanks for poking in here and letting us know ☺
