...Thanks to a question earthwormlover asked in the Roundup forum :)
Wouldn't it be nice to have a calendar somewhere that listed all of the roundups? It does not have to have all the details, maybe just the City, State and date. Then people can go to the link to check out the details if they are interested. I know I almost missed a Texas Roundup last spring, because I had not noticed the post referring to it. A lot of roundups, as the get closer and grow, end up populating most of the new threads. Then the other roundups with a one thread announcement get buried. I only check the roundup forum occasionally so it is easy to overlook something new when it's been bumped down by the present roundups which might have a lot of activity.
I am mostly just brainstorming at the moment - trying to think where this could be located - possibly a permanent link to a calendar at the top of the Roundup Forum. I know someone would have to keep it updated though. It would also be nice to have a short list in the newsletter with "Roundups planned for this month" just in case someone has missed the announcement.
A Roundup Calendar
Dave has already said he will NOT post Roundups in the newsletter as it goes out to non-subscribers as well and could be an open invitation to unsavory characters, esp. where children are concerned.
However, I do think a "calendar" of sorts is a wonderful idea! Maybe Jo (Roadrunner) who tries to get to all of them would volunter to start and maintain a thread of places and dates in chronological order... and Dave could program it to stay at the top? That is, if he cannot do a calendar elswwhere.
Oh, ok. I just know there are always newbies and not-so-newbies that don't realize the roundup forum is there, but I understand. I now seem to remember some communication about the roundup forum not being listed in the newsletter. I don't want to make it too much work, but I think it would be nice to have. After I posted, I was also thinking it might be include other events, as approved, also. I know Dave spoke at a nursery in Texas last spring and most people missed the announcement because he posted it in this forum only.
Maybe some sort of listing could go in the Parking Lot forum. It is subscribers only. Maybe a sidebar like on the home pages or at the bottom?
Sounds like a good place for it, frogs.
Hey, be sure and see my Hurricane Frogs on the Weather Forum!
Here Here :) As a sort of newbie, I came to the roundup forum and it was just too much conversation and too difficult to find actual locations and dates. You have to weed through what dishes people are bringing to what roundup to find what you need. I think there needs to be a forum just for a calendar.
This is a wonderful idea......just the facts and dates in one place would be GREAT!
I agree heartily - I'd love to see a listing. With so many RUs at certain times, all the current ones might not even show up on the most recent threads of the forum - lots of scrolling around, and digging into threads if the title isn't exactly clear. Definitely something listing just a date & location would be great!!

Okay, now what? A petition? Do we picket in front of Dave's house?
No, we just need more people to agree with us and then maybe Dave will tell us if it is do-able. :)
I kinda like the idea of a seperate forum for just listing roundups - one thread for each with just the place and time and other basics listed in the first part of the thread. And then then replies can be put in with links to various threads that have been started in the "Roundup discussions" forum. That will keep it to one thread per roundup in that particular forum. Basically only changes to the main details and links to discussions will only be allowed in response.
Also, then the "Roundup calendar" forum posting will be watched by interested parties, and the interested person will know when a new thread (ie "swaps at the roundup", "Food for roundup") has been started by a link in the Roundup calendar. Does that make since? LOL
Plus, when it's over, the links to the Roundup pics can be added to the same thread.
That sounds like alot of work for Dave. Once you know there is a RU and are directed to go to the RU forum, wouldn't you automatically watch the thread and keep watch for new ones?
I like the ides for a RU calender . But don't want to have Dave do so much work. I know that it would be nice to have one spot to start from. and that is my 2 cents. Binky :)))))
I would love to know when there is going to be a Roundup in my area, but would need a specific place in which to find that info. Maybe something clever, like "Coming Roundups" or "Roundup Calendar"? Good idea, sweezel.
BTW, I have never looked in the 'Parking Lot' forum.
Ummmmmmm isn't that what the Round Up forum we already have is for?
What about a calendar of events listing on the homepage with bdays and others that could list RU dates and maybe other garden events. If you want to know more, go to the RU forum.
that misses the point that Dave does not want the general public to see the times/places, only subscribers. I think it would be nice in the Parking Lot and they will direct us to look more carefully in the Round-up Forum. I think I missed a couple because I did not know soon enough to make plans.
I am intrigued by the idea of a parking lot forum, never went there....
I like the idea of one thread per round up. I don't like sifting through the minutiae of the ones I won't be attending. I have spoken! :-)
I like the idea of a subscriber only DG calendar. One that only subscribers could see.
I wonder how much work it would be for Dave to set one up for us?
Then, there would be the issue of who could post that calendar. Maybe it could be set up like the co-op forum, or maybe it could have it's own team of volunteer admins? Or maybe all subscribers could have the ability to post? (I would think that would be a bad idea, but what do I know . . . )
Anyway, I like the idea . . .
Cheri'
earthwormlover, parking lot and the round up picture forum are subscriber only so that we could post pictures and such with more privacy than other forums. I do not think that google can find them either as it can the database.
A calendar, of sorts, is a great idea. It was cool having the birthdays visable.
I'm also starting to think that we need to start a collection to send Dave, Trish and Terry on a weekend vacation somewhere, lol. They take such good care of us.
I wonder how many "hey daves, can you do" has he done in the past few years without grumbling (publically, lol) about it.

P.S.....btw Dave, how did you get so puter knowledgable? I find it amazing that you can continue to ugrade and please the masses her.
An area .. specifically for any upcoming Round Up Dates to be posted .. and any critical notifications .. would be quite a wonderful feature !
And - - -YESsiree-sirs indeedy - - - for paid subscriber view only!
And although, I certainly enjoy visiting all of the Round Up Forum threads posted .. and seeing all of the wonderful pics from, and reading the tons of posts to, etc. - perhaps, it does NEED to be elsewhere, completely separate from the Round Up Forum.
If it were possible for Dave and his trusty wizards ... Mite I also suggest, that there be no other (general yap & conversation) replies or posts allowed to it - - other than those that would be critically and/or directly associated with any of the prospective R U Dates, already announced . . . (ie: changes/postponements in times, places, and/or cancellations, etc.)
Hmmm, ^ that may be offering up more mutton .. than the wizards could chew on there - but surely worthy of inquiry - ? -
This is possible. I'll need someone (or a small group of someones) to volunteer to manage it. Who's up for that?
dave
I agree magpye. Just the facts, ma'am, only the facts.
OH YEAH .. forgot to mention ...
MSJen .. you'd inquired (to DAVE) .. how he got so puter knowledgable?
Wonted to tale ye .. that I lernd 'im ever thang he nose ...
hah ( .. Wellllllllll, I got my very own personal giggle out of that one!! .. ) ... LOL ...

Dave, how about a compromise for many folks... a box on the home page to list upcoming events, gardening shows, etc, (much requested elsewhere) as well as RU's? I may be persueded to volunteer but I think Roadrunner might be a better bet as she tries to go to so many, thus keeping track of them.
It'll be forum style with a person (or persons) in charge of creating threads. Only they can create threads but any subscriber will be able to view them.
dave
That was my first thought too, darius. Ask roadrunner!
Sounds good to me, Dave. I'll help.
I'll would be willing to help. Just let me know.
The biggest problem is reading through all the zillion RU threads to see what's actually scheduled already. I have a few so far.
Once it's set up, I belive we can get organizers to send us firm dates and a link to post in the thread so folks can find it.
OMG...is that DAVE? Gee Virginia.....
I would LOVE a calendar! Then I would know WHERE and WHEN I wanted to go next!! LOL I'd be glad to hep too...and I certainly think it should be closed to posting...no discussion...just the facts, ma'am. Jo
Way cool......this would be very helpful, especially for the RR.
LOL Weeds...I'm sorry that all the storms prevented me from meeting you and your dear Mom!! Next time for sure. Jo
Dave,
The way you do the Birthdays? A side bar titled Upcoming Gardening Events? Or would you want it to just be Round-ups. Newbies come in and don't know what a round up is.
The person who posts the event can go in and edit it to add links to related threads over at the round up forum.
Just a thought; I am fine with whatever you do.
a
Arlene... my thought, assuming I'm one of the "keepers" of that data, is to put the name, date and the link to the RU thread for it. Same for Events like Garden Shows, etc.
I understand Dave will probably have a separate forum for it, not a box on the home page. We'll still have to direct newbies to wherever it is, but the information won't be buried in pages and pages of RU plannings.
Darius,
With your organizational skills, you would be a great person for this challenge and would carry it off with ease and grace. Very giving of you to offer your skills and wisdom to make Dave's even better!
I was a member here for several months before I could take the time to go to that forum and find out WHAT is was. And, yes, one snowbound week, I went back and read all the old threads starting back at the original round-up.
Brugie and I were toying with the first Iowa Round-UP and I wanted to see what others had done. It did take a lot of time.
I must say that round-ups that last more than a day really give you more quality time with people.
Arlene, yesterday I went through the first several pages on the RU forum to see what's in the pipeline. That took a LONG time! I cannot imagine going back to square one and reading them all, LOL.
Before the 3 RU's I attended this year (GA Spring, TN, and KY) I tried to go through the new subscribers list and send newbies an email because I know it takes someone a long time to get through this huge garden of ours and know what's happening where, online and off.
My favorite idea is the calendar, but even a special forum for just dates and locations would be great!
I love all the brilliant minds we have here!
If there is anything I can do to help, I would love to! Just let me know!
Ditto here, would help if I felt I had sense enough to do so. Don't even know how to do a hyperlink ;0
