My gut tells me that celery is a cool-weather veggie, and I should sow the seeds around the same time that I sow my lettuce.
Is this correct?
Celery
Dave,
There's a really good article about growing celery in last year's Feb/March Kitchen Gardener. If you can't find a copy let me know, and I'll photo it for you.
According to the article, celery is not quite as hardy as lettuce. Exposing it to temperatures below 55 degrees can cause bolting.
Celery likes afternoon shade, and plenty of water.
I've never grown it because it always seemed too tempermental for the results. But this article makes it sound easier than I'd thought.
Celery likes it fairly hot. In zone 5/6 we start the celery inside about 12 weeks before our last frost date and plant after all fear of frost is gone. They take a long growing season 110+ days and need blanching.I put about 12 to 18 inches of straw on the plants to blanch but a friend uses busted field tiles placed over each plant.
Watch for slug damage. If they bolt use the seed. Cole slaw ain't slaw without celery seed!
