I was just wondering how many folks used flower seeds for holiday gift giving??
Anybody use flower seeds for presents.?
marciageiger - it sounds like a good idea for someone who knows that the person receiving the gift will appreciate it. that said, since i am the only gardener in my circle of friends and family i doubt that they would think its a good idea.
yesterday while watching martha stewart on t.v. she filled a beautiful vase with different kinds of nuts. i'm sure if you used seeds it would look just as good.
believe she first put a cellophane bag inside the vase. she stressed that it should be cellophane and not a plastic bag.
Yes, I do too! I throw them in with a major present to gardener friends! Elaine
We give various things in the spring. Hanging baskets, porch pots, even trays of vegetable plants. Try to fit the item to the individual.
We gave a small planter to an older couple a few years ago. She was housebound at the time, suffering from diabeties. She has since passed on. He has kept that planter going every year. Twice he has had us put new plants in it as the ones had run out. This planter has very special meaning to him!
Of course we never charge him for the replant, but he always insists.
Some of the simplest presents mean the most to some people!

I'd take a gift of a plant or seeds or anything mentioned above by CountryGardens any day over a piece of jewelry or other useless gift. I never really thought of giving gifts of seeds to friends. I do winter sow and have given entire flats of daylilies and hostas to one of my SILs and to the lady who started dating my Dad after my Mom died. She is a gardener and I was overwhelmed at how happy she was to get a tray of hostas and a tray of daylilies. I was sort of shocked and incredibly pleased that she knew the work that had gone into gathering the seed to planting it in the trays to keeping it hydrated. I really need to think more about giving gifts from the heart which is really what these are. So often we get caught up with store bought. I am tired of store bought as pretty much anything I need I buy for myself. Not that I am an ingrate but it gets a little old after a while. Thanks for starting this thread. Really making me rethink my own gift giving habits.
I often give seeds as gifts, you can find or make pretty little envelopes to make them a little more special for a gift. Last year my brother and his wife got several packets of tomato and pepper seeds, a piece of stretchy tube cloth (with giant tea bag written on the side), a ball of string to tie the ends of the cloth as well as other things, two sheets of information on the seeds and how to make compost tea (laminated so they could hang in in their shed) and a jar each of tea tree and lavender gels to help if they got bitten, stung or cut in the garden. They also got a book about their local region. It was a cheap present and one they are still using now.
I think home made present giving is something you have to be fairly careful about, if you give something homemade to one person who loves that kind of thing, it's great but others may prefer that it's something bought in unless the giver is very good at crafts. I make, sell and give handmade jewellery (it's not going to make me rich as I'm not great at it but some people like 'rustic';), it's by far easier for me and my budget to make a special piece for someone than a shop bought item, but there are members of my family and friends I simply wouldn't dream of giving these to, they wouldn't appreciate them and I wouldn't want them to feel obligated. It's the same with the plants and seeds, I only give them to those who appreciate and want them, I've heard so many people say someone gave them a plant and they are terrified it's going to die and make them feel guilty for not looking after the plant properly.
Baa, You have a valid point. I never thought of it that way.
Bare root roses, new pruners, gloves, kneeling pads, watering cans, and the like are some of my favorite Easter basket gifts.....but I have so few gardener friends. :(
yes!! I have been seed giving for years, even before I found this wonderful site. Most of my family and friends will check with me before they go elsewhere LOL I love sharing, and then watching their faces when they get blooms :)
