guess what I found?

Homer, NY

I went to our nearest compost pile in the village as I needed some extra dirt to play in, and I found the BIGGEST rhododendron it was just lying there waiting to be chopped into mulch! it looked as if some one just dumped it out of the pot, the dirt was still around the roots and there was still the tag on it as to what it is, rose lilac rhododendron . it's about three foot high and two foot around with new leaves all over, well it took all I had to hoast it onto my truck but I wanted that bad hope it makes it in it's new home.

Cool Find!

Wow!! I just don't understand why anyone would want to get rid of one. I, too, found one about a month ago, still in the gallon pot with all the tags on it, sitting out at the curb in someones garbage. Needless to say, it is now doing well in the front yard!!

I curb-shopped my Quince years ago, I also find alot of Hostas on the curb. I wish people would at least put a "FREE" sign on plants, and put them out the day after garbage day, I do this, it is usually gone within hours, people do not feel like it is garbage then and will stop to pick it up.

I just found another! I hope it's a different color,(THE FIRST ONE TOOK AHOLD WELL AND IS DOING GOOD) it's a lot taller than the first but it needs to be trimmed back when would be a good time to trim rhody's? I JUST LOVE GETTING FREE PLANTS! I tryed to hide it from DH when I pulled into the driveway this four foot bush almost fell out. my DH came running out and says where do you want to plant it? SOMETIMES THEY DO SURPRISE YA!!!!!

I love that you found the compost pile. I have found several plants, including a huge hosta clump in our community's pile, also found named malva; unfortunately the bulldozer guy seems to be terribly efficient now, and I have to check daily if I want some finds. It used to be that you could get tomotoes and squash that self-sowed. Some people are just TOO efficient

I got two pots of surfinia petunias. They had dried out and whoever it was must have thought they were dead. Not. :o) Cut them back and soaked them and two weeks later have one already covered in blooms. Heck, I would have been happy just to get two almost-new hanging baskets...
