What do you collect? Would you like a collection forum?

Cleveland, GA(Zone 7a)

We lost our power on thursday and didn't get it back until Saturday afternoon, which gave us time to enjoy my collection of hurricane oil lamps! They sure do look nice, and give off a lot m ore light than candles.

I also collect old cow bells and old buckets! My DH thinks I have a bucket fetish (haha) because I have old buckets for collecting eggs from the chicken coop, grain buckets that have pour spouts, and cow milking buckets. My old buckets look great with my house plants in them!

I would love to have a collecting forum. I am thinking of some things I could give to you folks who collect stuff I don't keep!

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

I collect fossils, hand made knives, model cars and aeroplanes, boats. DW collects coins, persian rugs, ceramic stuff? Foo dogs? Doultons? We inform each other of purchses but aren't sure why it was necessary. Go to Amoskeag Auction this weekend for some fancy nazi stuff we just wanted to be rid of. Her dad collected it but I won't give it house room. Frank

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Frank, I love Foo dogs, Tell her she can send me any dupes, LOL.

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Darius, when is KYRU? DW and myself are taking this weekend off to head north,BUT, DW got a post about a 2 yr old Dobergirl in a shelter in KY. Due to be killed in 2 days unless somebody ponys up $35 . Needless to say she has been on the phone. I drove from MA to Fla. and back in 8 days once. Cost $80 with one night in Conn motel($7) and one night in Fla. motel ($8), Dating myself I guess. (carton of cigs. in Virginia was $3.50) Anyway, maybe a 2 fer run south, Round up and new pup. Frank

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Cook books, Beanies (what a mistake that was!) Pocket Dragons, (don't even start!) cat stuff all over the house, hostas, and other perennials, bursting at the seams already. Stop me before I collect again!!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

The only thing I have ever really "collected" was porcelain hinged boxes; the kind with a little trinket inside. I've got the entire Wizard of Oz, some nursery rhymes, Madeline, and various other fun ones. I got all of them off of eBay, but they are too expensive now.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I also have several sugar and creamer sets, salt and pepper shakers, and some Blue Willow.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I have collections of enough sewing supplies and material to sew clothing for at least a year, and then there is the collection of supplies to make christmas wreaths which takes up another corner of the overflowing basement.
Now ask me when the last time I sewed or made a wreath was????

It is so sad! And now their are gardening supplies from one end of the garage to the other.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I would also love a collecting forum. I have collected things??? all my life and that a long time. Guess I have the most collections of birds, chickadees are my favorites, also wrens, humming birds and lots of others. Also for several years i collected First Day Covers and other stamp things. Actually would like to sell those. And of course gardening things, especially plants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Donna

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Frank... sorry but you posted after I left home for the KYRU... we would have loved to have you join us!

Did you get the pup?

crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Anything turtle!!! I even rescue the real ones!!! You wouldn't believe some of the odd things that come in a turtle shape!!

Tina

Northport, ME(Zone 5b)

Hi Darius, Nope he did get adopted. DW and I are taking first full week of October off. Up to camp to close it then to NH to DRU to adopt another. We have picked a couple off thier web site but they have2X as many there. Paisley is a favorite, not on the website but DW rescued her from here to Sandown when Tina was still alive. DW will make me keep you posted.

So - we've had a lot of response to this question. How do we proceed to Dave about getting a collection forum started?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Marcia, I am not in favor of a collection forum... because then he'd have to eventually divide it into books, china, fabric, old jewelry. porcelain, china, dolls etc. and then it might as well be a Collectibles site rather than a garden site.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Must agree with Darius.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Does anyone know of a website like this one that is based on Collectibles?

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

I've been collecting stuff since I was a young girl! I have a love of Rocks, Fossils, Sea Shells, Pottery & Art from different parts of the World, and that We are very passionate about! Funny that I married a Paleontologist, guess I added him to my collection, LOL!
Old and new Cookbooks, I love to entertain, and even put on the Ritz for just my DH, can't have enough, Plant & Flower Books, oh my Goodness, keeps me going in the winter! And so busy the rest of the year, as my real passion is plants, plants and more plants!!!!!! My ever growing collection of indoor plants. I collect Cactus, succulents and Orchids. And oh, those dang Beanie Babies I wish I had never started, must have at least 40 of them, silly me. I also collect antiques, and anything 50's to 60's .

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

There are forums out there - just did a google on them - but they're pretty specific. I don't think I agree with having to break up the forum into different categories. Pets isn't broken into cats/dogs/horses/pigs/etc. Home decorating isn't specific categories either. If you really think about it - there a lot of forums that aren't "garden" related that you could say the same about and yet they make DG so much more than just a gardening website. I think it's what makes this such a great place to participate in.

I think if a collectible forum is built - a search on a keyword could put you in touch with others collecting the same thing. Besides, it would be a nice, separate place to discuss our compulsive behavior with others like us. But - we can always use General Discussion. I'm up for whatever.....

I guess the question is - what does Dave think?

I have no collections per se but I pick up rocks, feathers, bones when I see them. And good sticks. Yes, I have to say I do collect sticks. Must be the dog in me.

Oh and old-time bluegrass music recordings. And boots. Does footwear count?

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

If you want a new forum go to the Daves Garden Forum that deals with the operation of the site, and ask Dave if he would make one, hyperlink back to this discussion and I bet you get results.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Someone once told me if you have 3 items of the same thing it is a collection! I have a lots of collections then.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Another rock/quartz person here.

crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

RockCity... I cannot say I 'collect' boots but I have far too many pairs, mostly work/hiking but a few cowboy boots remaining from my horse days.

I have my share of rocks, feathers and bones/skulls, too. And some nice weathered wood pieces but not really sticks, LOL.

Cincinnati, OH

Ooh! Ooh! Cottage Rose reminded me I do have a collection -- tea towels/dish towels. I have those calendar ones, in pure linen, from almost every year in the '60s, and a bunch of really gorgeous colorful ones. I use them every day. Guess that's why I didn't think about them as a collection, but I buy them whenever I see them.

Darius, I wore cowboy boots at my wedding. When I saw what those teensy white pumps cost, and knew I couldn't walk in them anyway and would never wear them again, I decided that money was better spent on boots.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I love the image of wearing boots at a wedding. :)

When I finally quit wearing Corporate Drag, I had 70 pair of high-heels in a full rainbow spectrum, some never even worn. I like the boots better.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Corporate DRAG!! LOL heeheeeehahahahahaha (snorting and hooting here) just exactly the way I felt. When I retired I sold all the suits/ silk blouses/briefcase etc. to a neighbor's daughter just entering the corporate black hole, without a qualm. I remember buying three pairs of the same high heels, in different colors, buying shoes that never touched a sidewalk, and ended up with a closet full. Salvation Army made a haul. Now, the only thing that goes on my feet are comfy sandals, athletic walkers, and occasionally polish on my toes!! Hard pressed to find anything respectable to wear when I have to emerge from the boonies and dress up for an occasion.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

tmbolin, I forgot, I collect anything frog also, lol, they come in every shape and sizes too!!!!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

bluegrass425, I have a couple pieces of those, but mainly modern 50's & 60's, We have a Cliff May modern 1954 home, very much like Eickler's, I also collect Architectural books by Cliff May, Eickler, Chris Chaos, Benjamin Baldwin, etc...I have a great collection of many modern 50-60's crystal vases in Red and orange, and a ton of pottery pieces antique and modern.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

meezersfive, glad to see I'm not alone!

Cincinnati, OH

When I was a young hippie chick the guy I was madly in love with bought me a book: "How to Dress for Success." It had a corporate babe with a floppy bow tie on the front.

I got over him right then and there.

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Rock city, LOL LOL, right on!!!!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I love crate labels. The colors are so rich on them, and the artwork so vivid! So far I only have two "real" ones I found at yard sales, but I want more. We're painting our kitchen walls a cranberry/burgundy color and I can imagine how some of those old labels would just POP if framed and hung on those walls. Here's a site with hundreds....I could look at them all day. I download the images and look a them from time to time. http://www.paperstuff.com/

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi, Kimberly
We have a great old fashion flea market about 25 miles from me. I will watch for them. Advertising items are really popular now. They are so colorful.
Thanks for the link. I was clueless about crate labels.

One of my favorite collections is my swanky swigs!

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

How about just buying the ones of your choice and decoupaging them onto the wall? A coat of clear acrylic over them would keep it "washable" ..........

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I don't want to make them permanent, nor deface them. At $3-25 per label, depending on their rarity and condition, I don't want to ruin them. They would look neat, though. I could always scan and print copies, I guess. I want the flexibility of changing the design later, though.

Lewiston, ID(Zone 5b)

A collection forum would be fun! I collect rolling pins, umbrellas, carved, glass or unusual herons, small picure frames and anything else that catches my eye.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Would anyone want to post pics of their favorite treasures? Maybe start a new thread. I would love to see yours.
